The Supreme Court Allows More Time For Pennsylvania's Mail In Voting

"The Supreme Court allows extra time for Pennsylvania's mail in ballots by Marc Sherman and Mark Levy. Washington. The Supreme Court will allow Pennsylvania to count mailed in ballots received up to three days after the November third election rejecting a Republican plea in the presidential battleground state. The justices divided four four on Monday an outcome that upholds a state Supreme Court ruling that required county election officials to receive and count mailed in ballots that arrive up until November sixth. Even if they don't have a clear postmark as long as there is not proof it was mailed after the polls closed Republicans including President Donald Trump's campaign have opposed such an extension arguing that it violates federal law that sets Election Day as the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November and that such a decision constitutionally belongs to lawmakers not the courts. The State Republican Party Chairman Lawrence Tavis said the party disagrees with the decision and noting the four four decision. It only underscores the importance of having a full supreme court as soon as possible to be clear. The Supreme Court decided not to grant stay which does not mean the actions of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court would withstand a legal challenge to their judicial overreach. Should the court hear the case tape said? Nancy Patty. Mills Chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party accused Republicans of trying to sow confusion and disenfranchise eligible voters. This is a significant victory for Pennsylvania voters. Mills said in a statement, the Democratic majority on the state's High Court had cited warnings that postal service delays could invalidate numbers of ballots and surging demand for mail-in ballots during the coronavirus pandemic to invoke the power used previously by the state's courts to extend election deadlines during a disaster. Chief Justice John Roberts joined with the three liberal justices to reject Pennsylvania Republicans call for the court to block the State Court ruling. Justices Samuel Alito Neal Gorsuch Brett. Cavanaugh and Clarence Thomas would have required the state to stop accepting absentee ballots when the polls close on November third. There were no opinions accompanying the order. So it is impossible to say what motivated either group of justices the conservative justices have been reluctant to allow court quarter changes to voting rules close to an election. The court also is weighing a similar issue from Wisconsin but in that case, the ruling being challenged comes from a federal appeals court and the Democrats who are asking the justices to step in. Most states make election day the deadline, but eighteen states half of which backed trump the twenty sixteen election have a post election day deadline with nearly a million votes already cast in Pennsylvania, we support the court's decision not to meddle in our already working system Pennsylvania's Attorney General Democrat Josh Shapiro said in a statement. On, a separate track Republicans in the State House have pressed Governor Tom Wolfe a Democrat to agree to eleventh-hour legislation to eliminate or limit the three days under the court's order. The case is one of many partisan battles being fought in the state legislature and the courts primarily over a male in voting. In Pennsylvania amid concerns that a presidential election result will hang in limbo for days on a drawn out vote count in the battleground state. And Pennsylvania the State Democratic Party and a liberal group the Pennsylvania Alliance for retired Americans had salt an extension of the election day deadline to count mailed ballots. About two point eight, million mail in ballots requested and approximately nine hundred thousand returned democratic registered voters are requesting mail ballots at a nearly three to one ratio over Republicans, and it's September seventeenth ruling the divided state Supreme Court said ballots must be postmarked by the time polls close and be received by county election boards at five pm on November six, three days after the November third election it also said that ballots lacking clear postmark could be counted unless there was evidence that they were mailed after the polls closed.

Seattle Police announce arrests related to arson, bat assault on officer

"Charging decision in the Briana Taylor case of a living back at the end of September, September 24th or so there was national protests about that decision. And, of course here in Seattle, there were protests. And that was the weekend that we saw the one protester who said the officer ruled his bicycle over his head. And in that same demonstration, there were some fires lit Dumpster fires, things like that. And then a cop that was hit in the back of the head. With a baseball bat. So originally there was an arrest of a Jacob Greenberg, who's 19 for the Dumpster fires, And that was several weeks ago He was released and then last week he was rearrested again. Shifty, has talked about the arrest today. The actions alleged in these cases clearly demonstrate the ongoing violence. It continues to be connected to some of the riots occurring across the city. Jacob Greenberg is charged with assault in the first degree for hitting an ESPY officer in the head with a metal bat. So hard during a riot that the officer's helmet was cracked. I'm sure you've seen some of these photos. These disturbing images on your broadcast and on social media. According to charging documents after the brutal attack, the national from Kirkland Express remorse Not for potentially fatally assaulting itself. For the fact that the officer was wearing a helmet that most likely saved his life. Greenberg also texted a friend that he would like to and I quote slit every SBD throat. So that was in the charging documents of this same 19 year olds who is the stepson of a former state lawmaker who Is accused now of hitting that officer over the head with the bat. Did you guys see that It was viral video when actually so he's not charged and he originally assigned said he was released to his family and the prosecutor had actually asked for a higher bail. I believe in that, but the judge went ahead and released him. Now he's being held on $750,000 bail. Thea. Other arrests related to protest that came last last week or recently, Dia's also talked about today. 20 year old Jonathan Do. Gir of Olympia is also in jail, charged with arson for throwing a flaming object. Ignited fused into a Capitol Hill's coffee shop that caused an immediate explosion. Luckily, no one was hurt. Distance regard for people's lives and safety by throwing flaming objects into a business. This can't be our new normal. Business is small and large, are struggling during this pandemic. Does that mean and it's completely unacceptable that this is the ongoing violence is on ly com pounding their challenges.

"Two weeks now. You're going to you know price probabilities well, you know there's a fifty percent chance this candidate wins or you know a sixty percent chance that the senate does this or or something like that same thing with stimulus. All the market is doing at this point and it's they opinions you're coming in on what the chances of stimulus and election results are. Once, you get more certainty around those things that's win fundamental step into play because I mean you look the stimulus this stimulus article is perfect because it talks about how? Earlier this week bank earnings came out and they were. Insane beats I mean that really really strong earnings from the bank. Yet they went down. Two and three percent a piece. Because They the news came out that yes. Stimulus ain't gonNA happen. Based on one days. Yes. Stimulus ain't gonNA happen. So then the banks go down. Right, though they crush their earnings. Their fundamentals are in a much better shape than originally anticipated right Now. So that's That's why when you look at historically why? Wa stocks have usually done. Well. After an election is just strictly because there's more certainty to pricings. Yeah and I wanted to what Dr says there will be winners and losers. So. Stocks or any Security Are always looking for. A pricing mechanism. something. You know to use pricing. One might argue. With the ten year treasury at under one percent. That PS. Can Be infinite in a sense because you know Becau-. Well because you. You gotta get it to where Not. Infinite. But. Could be higher higher because Warren Buffett always use the pricing model of. The ten year treasury plus x percent. In order to calculate what kind of internal rate of return he thought he could get on stocks. It actually doesn't bode well for. For future performance because. If With, an elevated price as is. You know it makes it. Hard to argue. For thanks to go. Higher. Right that's true and you know the end of the day I mean the market is forward-looking mechanism. So Lord interstates. You know should help when you're making your decision whether to buy stock or a bond. But as the market anticipating that interest rates are going to remain low forever. if that's the case and you could make an argument for higher and higher bees but. At some point, you know if interest rates do start going up what happens at that point? you know these valuations be justified at that point. That brings us to the end. "That are suffering a lot more than we are and sure. You know, sometimes it's helpful to remember others also as part of your plan. Absolutely. So absolutely so long version C fund what that set up for is for an emergency and you need to be willing to be able to tap into that when hard times come the next wage is no re-entry plan. We've talked the last several weeks about timing markets. You know, why you shouldn't try to time the market timing the market can be one extreme to the other be it going all to cash or going all in stocks or all-in-one stock or one sector making big bets one way or the other and there's a lot of reasons why you shouldn't do that from a long-term standpoint, but yep. Say you go you you say okay. I can't handle another March timeframe of volatility. So I'm going to adjust my long-term plan and I'm not go 50% cash instead of what your long-term plan was, you know 30% in bonds you adjust that to say only take 50% put it in bonds or cash. Okay, I can understand that, you know, but what you have to have when you do that is a plan on how to get that money back invested, you know and have some thought out a plan thought out beforehand so you can implement it because one or two things you're going to three things are going to happen one the market does what she think it's going to do it goes down and you're happy while you still need to Get back invested. The second thing that could happen is the market goes up when you thought it was going to go down. You need to have a plan on how you're going to get reinvested back in and that's I think where you where it's so important to be able to talk to someone and have that laid out. There's there's accountability there, you know, if somebody's say okay this played out the way we thought it was going to or maybe it didn't but here's how we need to react now because we have to get back on track for the long-term plan. Right and I mean when you think about it, March of this year was a classic example of you know, what can happen how markets can react quickly, you know, like they did the market dropped quickly over 35% but with the same speed at recovered, so if you had gotten out of the market, you really wouldn't have thought too much time to get back in. Yeah, I mean literally some of the biggest up days were the day after the biggest down days. And so those those returns are clustered together off and that's why you have to be able to move quickly or stay on your long-term plan and not deviate from it. Right and I mean depending on your age, you know, if you are relatively young and if you have many years ahead of you while you are still working and can keep investing and sometimes it's best just not to focus as much thought. The markets, you know, if you keep focusing on it, then you're you are bound to think that certain things are going to happen which may or may not happen. Sometimes your best strategy is to you know, maybe watch it once every few months if you must but just stick to your long-term plan and not try to make active, you know bets on the market, right? And I think the key on that plane, even though is that you understood it going into it you you had something that was laid out to you that was clear on this is how you know, we may react in a down Market. This is one that you own in the portfolio, but having that plan clearly laid out that'll help you avoid making big moves one way or the other, you know the on the extremes, you know, if it's somebody going from 30% and bonds to 50% bonds. That's one thing if it's going from, you know, 30% bonds to 100% cash that's something else. So you just have to be careful and it stayed disciplined right? And you always have to remember that markets are not very obvious. You know, sometimes they do the opposite of what most people expect. And the reason for that is that you know, the market knows, you know as individuals. We think we know something is going to happen. But what we know is already known it's it's not new information. So there's a good chance that the market is already pricing that in while you are thinking about it. So long markets are not, you know, like mathematics, you know, it's not a will happen, hence, you know, this will happen or or physics. So there's a lot of psychology involved their thoughts. So sometimes it's best just to have a system rather than you know constantly thinking about what will happen next, right? The next one want to touch on is wage. Funding a retirement plan. Sometimes it's not possible. You know, like you were saying Tom, I mean sometimes cash flow stops, you know, if it's a wage loss of job loss of employment type of scenario, but if it's not if it's just a downturn in the stock market, but you're still you still have a job. You still have the income coming in home make your contributions to the 401K 403 b whatever retirement plan you may have continued making those contributions home. Cuz a it's if it's the company match it's free money be you want to have that money going in the dollar cost averaging so that way you're buying more shares at that lower price, you know..

"Getting there house in order and You know they had adequate capital issues going into this crisis excess excess capital ratios yes. Sir they did have some cushion to you know. Survive. Such crisis, but I think. Ultimately I mean, they're still we still don't know if there will be longer term consequences in that. You know even though people may have not defaulted right now businesses especially, will they default a year from now But At. The same time you know it's the government data more worried about you know because going into this crisis, they've already leveraged, and now they're even more leveraged in terms of you know borrowing money to we've been leveraging since the financial crisis. So I mean it. It remains to be seen how how displays out but we do know that. I think the expectations so fire were worse than how it's played out when it comes to unemployment when it comes to these loan reserve write-offs. So I think banks have perhaps over his. For it and and I would argue not just banks but the tangible economy as a whole. You could argue. Is a by this point you know because when you look at the market. As a whole, you know your your tangible businesses and what I mean by tangible is something that you know. Isn't like a technology basis like Google's android platform or something like that. I'm talking about your your caterpillars, your you know your your industrials, your. Insurance is banks these these things that Are Stable. Pillars of the economy. There they all have had this what you call income statement recession but not necessarily a balance sheet recession meaning that, yes? Yes. There income statements took a hit this year. What happens when you get to a balance sheet recession is that You're permanently impaired. And that hasn't happened. and. That kind of sets you up for you know a potential good side. Well, in the the key to they say they talk later on Questions asked why would you buy the banks now and It says if you look out, you know two to three years saying don't buy it because something may not happen for two to three years. Well, how do you know that that's the thing if you're if you're if you see something that has value for trading, you know blow it's normal price to book. You know the balance sheet looks good. You know you're seeing all these positive thing is a solid foundation while you can buy it. And you know you don't know if it's going to be six months or a year. But when it happens if you say well, I'm GonNa wait six months because I think it'll be a year but then the market will see it happen before you can act on it and it'll move away from you. So when you see value, you build a position and you take a long-term approach? And? That's that we by the banks through. An ETF, right? Yes. Yes. Large banks regional banks And we we had calls with you know a number of them. You know earlier this year but through the ETF, it's a way to further diversify. Right one of the cool things is this article talks about. Is the Covid Beta and I think that's an interesting thing to talking about the underlying economy in that how you've seen Betas, which are measurement wrists significantly change Reflecting what cove is done in the economy? Hey thanks for listening that wraps up another show. If you WANNA listen to your favorite Tom Duprey shows you can find them on our website or wherever you listen to your favorite podcast. "There's A. Book called. Popular Delusions and the madness of crowds right by I can't think of the guy's Machi-. Yeah. It talks about bubbles. And our friend. Jim Grant. Has described bubbles also. So which bubble is this when describing? Its its talking about the current move in tech stocks what we've seen really Since the Bottom that the stock market made in March since this all pandemic thing started, we had a huge drop in the market, but since March that have been quite a few texts talks. that have gone up multiple times. So stock like Tesla end up eight or nine times since March Apple big company doubled since March. There have been multiple smaller companies that have gone up five six times. Why you know the and they talk about this, there's A. There's A. Kind of a strange brew of. A lot of it had to do with people not working. Nothing to do sports to bet on, they were betting on the stock market. So I wonder how much In terms of buying. From individuals on Robin Hood. And I'd be interested in just that Apple Lone. Individuals buying stocks on Robin Hood how much that had to do with the rising Tesla just Robin Hood. It's I don't know how to quantify that to be honest There are websites published as one called Robin. Tack. I think that's what it's called. It publishes robinhood uses a buying I've looked at it during the last month or two when Testa has introduced shown up in the top. you know list I'm sure that has something to do with it but I think it also has to do this article talks about Softbank, you know buying jaw four billion dollars, worth of options And it doesn't just have to be Robin Hood. So there could be other young or are there other APPS competing with Robin? Hood that are. Kind of like Robin Hood. They're not like Robin Hood but a lot of brokerage companies and moved to zero daughter commissions nor trade fees. So they're also trying to compete against Robin Hood. So you know you're td Ameritrade and. A bunch of other companies where the commissions are quite low. where the barrier to buying the stock, it used to be back in the seventies I guess you probably spend fifty or one hundred dollars to buy a stock. You right today you pay nothing at the same time in other I look at it is that we are in a bull market that's touted Twelve, years ago most And As a bull market matures. You see more interest from retail investors. I. I don't think this phenomenon is is unique. It's unique from the point of view of you know commissions being low. But if you look back at the last major bull market in the late ninety s as got closer and closer to the peak, you saw tremendous retail interest So that aspect I think remains in previous bull markets you know back in. The seventies eighties, I was a lot of interest in Japanese stocks and then in the sixties and seventies ever that was interest words. Tech. Stocks in telecommunications stocks I think, and of course, the Great Depression. The. Story about how you know the shoe shine boy would tell you what stocks to buy So I think it's the same phenomenon this time around you know young robinhood investors but The idea is that as bull markets mature, you know we've had eleven years, twelve years of rising market. And as it gets. Closer to the peak, you're going to see more and more people interested in in this market. No one was interested in this market and no eight or nine. Oh yeah they were. They didn't WanNa hear about stocks I Our sons were at A. School. And I got a list of parents. And sent out a flier saying stocks are cheap. This was in. Oh nine or maybe early Oh ten. and. They complained. To. The school over it. I got a lot of pushback. Obviously no customers. But it was because. I think people hated stocks at the time. Right because back then the memory of the DOT com. Bubble was close you know it was pretty recent people had lost money in the housing Since then So. There was a period dislike there was in the early eighties when business had this famous headline death of equities where you know under the like stocks. But since then we had this massive bull market and something similar happened again after away or nine we've had you know when you look at what the market has done percentage wise since then it's been tremendous, it's gone up almost five and a half six times over a period of. you know eleven years. So that's a massive bull market and it's taken a lot of people by surprise because a lot of people in the earliest stages did not believe in this market. You know this is this was this has been one of the most hated markets because people always had a reason as to why the market was going to crash and Sherve you've seen major swings you know and. Here recently in February we saw quick thirty, five percent drop, which is a major swing. But unlike a real bear market, the despite the drop did not last immediately in a month's time you had major swing back So the are all signs that the bull the bigger bull market has continued and. Now you're starting to see retail interest, and of course, you could argue that the pandemic and The inability to go to casinos and bedrooms, sports and things like that has brought another section into the market. But even without that, you know you, you would see even in January February, before the market dropped, there were some signs of complacency. There are some stocks that going up without the backs. That is you Tom. And I it's kind of. To what you were saying though like this sports gambling all that stuff, the casinos. Storm, because. When you think of these big large cap companies you know These. Multi hundred, billion dollar companies and things. A lot of their stock ownership is institutional investors so. Really, you only have a very small percentage that is. Daily traded that won't, and you know we've talked about this with all its that marginal barrel or that marginal stock and what you're seeing is you know as more people get it get on Robin Hood. So this is where the Robin Hood factor really comes into play. You know as more and more people, open robinhood account and buy one share Tesla. It's that marginal share every single Tom and. When? When you're only trading three percent of the float or whatever that number may be you know it can move the stock from a liquidity standpoint. Beyond where it should be. And the opposite true as well..

"We're about to hear from Tom value. You will know Tom incredible interviews from impact theory, millions and millions and millions of us and people's lives changed. Probably some of the best interviews we've ever experienced on the internet by far the best interaction. Best questions. Absolutely incredible energy, so rigorously committed personal development and growth, and he genuinely lives everything he says this guy is like disciplined the maximum. And of course, we all know what the incredible heights, he achieved request incredible heights. I know he's going to achieve with his incredible comic book series called neon future. So please freon for my very, dear friend, and our next speaker, Tom billiard? Thank you for that. Jay jetty, the man. Yeah. J Shetty offers the intro. You you take it. That's just life lesson. Number one. All right. So I wanna come on the heels of that last video and talk about what is the single most important breakthrough. Any of us are going to have in our lives and look it's getting late right now. And we have an opportunity we've got about an hour together. Forty five minutes. I guess we've got forty five minutes together. And what I want to try to do over the next forty five minutes is really create a vibe to bring us together to leverage that weird state that you get into when it's late at night, and you're a little bit tired, and you're open to something that you wouldn't necessarily be open to at any other point in your life. So don't fringe out on the edges. Don't start leaking away like cosmic radiation, come into the centers get close because if we can pull this off, hopefully, we can really start to have some transformations. What got me interested in coming to this event? And being a part of it is that it was so different. James and Steph, flew out to meet me to spend time with my wife, and I to paint a vision for what they wanted to do that they wanted to create something that would literally be a journey..
