Deutsche Bank turned over Trump financial documents to New York prosecutors

"More trouble for the president another scandal that has dogged him actually now for most of his first term, here's the headline in the Times tonight quote trump's bank was subpoenaed by New York prosecutors in criminal inquiry. Here's the nut graph of that story. Here's how it starts the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, which means state prosecutors in New York state issued the subpoena last year to Deutsche Bank, which has been Mr trump's primary lender. Since the late nineteen nineties, they are seeking financial records that he and his company provided to your bank according to people familiar with the inquiry because of. Its long-standing and multifaceted relationship with trump Deutsche Bank has been a frequent target of regulators and lawmakers digging into the president's opaque finances but the subpoena from the Office of the District Attorney appears to be the first instance of a criminal inquiry involving trump and his dealings with Deutsche to lent him in and his company more than two billion dollars over the past two decades. Here's the amazing part the part that was the sort of draw jaw-dropping reveal in this story. Quote deutschebank complied with the subpoena. Out over a period of months last year, the bank provided the prosecutor's office with detailed records including financial statements and other materials that Mr Trump provided to the bank as he sought loans according to two of the people familiar with the inquiry. The subpoena to Georgia banks saw documents on various topics related to Mr Trump and his company including any materials that might point to possible fraud according to people briefed on the subpoenas contents. The bank's cooperation with the prosecutor's office is significant because other investigations that have sought trump's financial records have been stymied by legal challenges from the president and his family. This criminal investigation from New York prosecutors initially appeared to be focused on hush money payments made in two thousand sixteen to two women who said they had affairs with Mr Trump. But in a court filing this week prosecutors in the district attorney's office cited public reports of possibly extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the trump organization and suggested they were also investigating possible crimes involving bank fraud. And Insurance Fraud. So. To be clear, this is a big deal that the New York Times is reporting tonight this is not about the subpoenas for the president's financial and tax information that were litigated up to the supreme. Court are now kicking around in the lower lower courts by the present, his lawyers seek to delay compliance with these subpoenas. What this is about is a subpoena of Deutsche Bank. which has loaned two billion dollars mysteriously to the president over his recent business career. Subpoenas to Deutsche, bank related to their dealings with the president, and these are not subpoenas that the president has successfully fended off in these tied up in court. This is a subpoena to Deutsche Bank the bank has complied with. And they have handed over all of this trump related documentation to state prosecutors were apparently pursuing a multifaceted criminal investigation of the president and his business an investigation that is not bound by the Justice Department's Ninety Day rule such as it is nor are they bound by the Justice Department's rules prohibiting the indictment of a sitting president because those rules are federal rules and these are state prosecutors? Prosecutors not answerable to attorney general the embar. Not only is it news that they are pursuing this stuff in the way that they are it is big news that in pursuing this information about the president, they got it they got their hands on this stuff from Deutsche Bank. Who Knew.

Republicans dismiss Trump's suggestion to postpone November election

"President Trump tweeted on Thursday morning at the presidential election should be late, something that he has no power to do. Election Day can only be changed by both houses of Congress. The top Republican in the House appeared to push back against President Trump Suggestion to delay the November 3rd presidential election. Meanwhile, KOW South Jersey Bureau chief David Madden spoke with a local expert on the president's ability or lack thereof to do so. Rutgers Camden Public policy professor Lorraine Maneaty centers on voting rights and Fraud. She echoes the opinion widely expressed in the wake of the presidential tweet. Federal law sets the date of the election, so the law would have to be changed and also the Constitution set the dates for when the new Congress has sworn in, and the president is sworn in. So there are institutional obstacles to the president trying to change the date of the election, But he has no authority as president. To do that. Many suggest Mr Trump is trying to muddy the waters in advance of the November vote in case he loses. Long term studies have demonstrated few problems with voting by mail, and she believes the president would be better served by pushing for more resources rather than trying to instill doubt among parts of the

Trump threatens to delay election

"Unprecedented unprecedented step step Thursday Thursday toward toward calling calling the the November November election election into into question question suggesting suggesting in in a a tweet tweet that that the the election election shouldn't shouldn't happen. happen. In November should be delayed to some future date. It's a move never seen in America before, but a tool dictators and other countries have often relied on to hold onto their power. Last night, the president repeated his warning the mail in ballots will, in his words, rig the presidential election. More from correspondent and he feels the president pointed toe isolated mail in ballot problems and claiming all mail in voting is rigged. Despite the fact he and his family and much of the staff had voted absentee by mail for years. We all agree That absentee voting. It's good mail in ballots will lead to the greatest fraud but mail in ballots. States say the voting is no different from absentee and only registered voters can cast that ballot. Presidents don't suppose upon the election would be unconstitutional as Congress sets the election's not the president and leaders from both parties made it clear they have no intention to delay the vote. And Mr Trump Suggestion more from correspondent Terry Moran. Trump's statement about delaying an American election was shot down immediately by Democrats and Republicans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in an interview in Kentucky. Never in the history of the country through wars, depressions and the civil war and we ever not had a federally scheduled election on time. But Joe Biden has been warning for weeks, Trump might try to use the pandemic to delay or delegitimize the election. Mayor de Blasio called the president's move. An act of a timer. I think a lot of people even some people had supported President Trump. I gotta look at that and say no. That is that is abnegation responsibly. But more importantly, that's an assault on our democracy and cannot stand when the president may not be successful in delaying the election, his actions were seen as a way to further delegitimize the results. In the eyes of his supporters, which should he lose could further inflame the walls of political division.

Trump suggests delaying election over vote-by-mail claims

"President Trump continues to rally against the widespread use of mail in voting for the upcoming presidential election come November, he says it will result in the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in history. And now the president is publicly questioning whether the presidential election should be delayed. CBS NEWS White House correspondent Stephen Portnoy with his story, taking his crusade against mail in voting to a new level, the president suggests in a tweet that the election should be delayed until quote people can properly securely and safely vote. Since 18 48. The presidential election has been held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, and experts insist it would take an act of Congress to change that. Critics quickly pointed to Mr Trump's tweet as another example of the president, flouting American norms, traditions and laws. The president does not have the power to change the date of the election. Only Congress. Khun do that. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earlier this afternoon, rejected that idea outright. "In a dead heat it has Buddha Judge Judge twenty-three in Sanders at twenty four. The Emerson poll. That came out same day it has sanders further ahead at thirty two with Pooja twenty-three and monmouth which came out the day before had sanders anders within spitting distance of Buddha Judge Sanders Twenty four Buddha judge at twenty bottom line is that that lead has shrunk from medically for Bernie Sanders. Who is getting a big bump from Iowa? Part of that is due to the media coverage Bernie did win the most votes in Iowa. But he's unlikely to win the most delegates it's basically a dead heat and Bernie is expected to do really well in Iowa. Buddha judge was kind of left for dead a few weeks ago well. Buddha judge obviously did really well in Iowa and now he's doing really well in New Hampshire. Now these are very very white states and either Bernie Norbu judge has a lot of black support. Which is why I suggest that if Buddha judge actually overcomes Bernie then that's GonNa leave it up in a pathway for Joe Biden in places like South Carolina because Buddha judge does not have the national organization? That Bernie has Bernie has been starting to make some inroads into minority communities in ways the Buddha judge simply has not all the Buddha judges have far more innately talented politician than Bernie. Sanders is boo. Judge has also been able to work this magic where he pretends that he's moderate when he is absolutely not moderate. I mean super not. Moderate by the way Biden is completely collapsing in New Hampshire as well Biden is falling apart. Elizabeth Warren is stagnant. I think she is Toast Biden. At least can make the case to his people that if he holds onto South Carolina. Maybe he'll do okay there but again the polls in South Carolina been tightening fairly a lot as well biden is now running at like eleven percent in the last two polls in New Hampshire just Zastava stuff for Joe Biden. He's going to have to show some signs of life to his supporters. He is going to be toast. Forthwith now with all that said the latest East Carolina you pull still shows Biden blowing everybody out in South Carolina. Rachel's is Biden at thirty seven. This is taken pre I with Biden at thirty seven Tom Steyer at nineteen and nineteen and that actually is a sign of possibility for Michael Bloomberg. Right because Michael Bloomberg is just like Tom Steiner. Except more so Tom Sawyer. Spent like seventy five million bucks. Bloomberg has been two hundred million dollars on this race particularly in Super Tuesday states so this race is a complete complete match. The person with the easiest path by far at this point is burning because Bernie is the most well-known. He's got a machine. He's got a movement behind him and he has a lot of small dollar donors that are just throwing throwing off money right. All of that shows benefit for him but the fragmentary nature of the field. And the possibility that you could see. Let's say that. Let's say that Bernie. Let's say that Biden falls apart so badly South Carolina he gets out well that opens the door to either Buddha judge or Bloomberg or somebody else so it's a mess Out There Biden for his part is panicking. He's prepping for the debate. But what exactly is he going to do that. He hasn't done before. Presumably is going to have to get aggressive with Bernie presumably is gonNA GONNA have to get aggressive mostly with bondage attack. Buddha Judge Buddha judges pretty been fairly smoothly on defense I put a judge has been able to sort of push off all the attacks on him and also also. I'm not sure that the experience attack really matters much Democrats. They elected to the presidency twice. A guy who had had five minutes in the United States. Senate if they really wanted somebody who had done anything in his life. They wouldn't be looking at Bernie's Ernie who's been a useless piece of crap for the last six decades and the the the bottom line is that they're looking for somebody who sort of mirrors vision makes them feel good about themselves and Buddha judges doing that far more so the Biden. This is the problem for Joe Biden according to The Washington Post outside the castle themed Radisson Hotel where Joe Biden has been staying. His campaign bus was parked and ready for events but on on Thursday just five days before the crucial primary here. The candidate was nowhere to be found. Biden spent Thursday gathered with his top advisors at his home in Wilmington Delaware seeking reset and perhaps a last ditch effort to save his candidacy beginning with debate on Friday night. He'll no public events he's set to appear on all the Sunday shows on Sundays. He needs the publicity following dismal results. In the Iowa caucuses that have rattled many in his orbit. His campaign is now simultaneously trying to lower expectations here. Some suggesting that. Consider a Finnish as low as third-placed victory while bracing for a second straight difficult election day in one troublesome signed signed for the financially strapped campaign. Canceled nearly one hundred fifty thousand dollars in TV ads in South Carolina which votes February twenty-ninth and the spending Nevada whose February twenty-second contest follows. New Hampshire's the move seemed to acknowledge. The binds campaign cannot sustain a continued run of bad news. Which of course is true? He needs to win. Nevada outright Dick Harpootlian South Carolina state. Senator said from a Biden Haydn perspective. There's going to be a course correction all three states before Super Tuesday. He's got to have sharp elbows. WHO suggested those inside? The campaign realized the gravity of the moment that Biden. Had you better explain the differences with his opponents. The problem is that his campaign is not exactly built for Comeback Kid. Bill Clinton New Hampshire type moments. Right it's an old campaign. It's a daughter in campaign campaign. He hasn't bothered to do any of the groundwork. Just assumed who's going to sail to the nomination that he was owed the nomination and people didn't feel that way about him in the same way that they felt about. Hillary Clinton are Boolean says history may right the best thing that ever happened. Joe Biden was getting punched in Iowa. It woke him up his campaign up his supporters up. They were complacent. You've got to talk about the other guy but at least on Thursday was the other guy talking about Biden. PEBA judge was going after Biden. He said if your focus is on ability it ain't Biden. WHO's the most electable? It's me now in a second we're GONNA get to Bernie versus Buddha judge because now this is a three candidate race and really one of those candidates is in serious trouble right that candidate. WHO's in serious trouble? The most obviously is is Biden. And we'll talk about the radicalism of people to the judge which has been completely ignored right. He's been able to pretend that he's actually a member of the moderate Coterie simply because Bernie is an out and out socialist and Buddha. Judge isn't a bourges. No moderate. We'll get to to that in just one second I. The Second Amendment is incredibly important. The reason that I am a gun owner is for ideological end. Self defense reasons. The Second Amendment was designed to protect your rights the whole purpose of the second amendment. It is to protect you from a government that would violate the second amendment you know. I feel really strongly about this. Our founding fathers also felt strongly about this else feels strongly about this the.

"Okay so as I say. President trump gives this fairly ridiculous presser. and was I mean. Let's just be real about this. It was hilarious but can also be ridiculous. Many things can be true. Once that things things can be entertaining and also ridiculous. See every Michael Bay movie like ever or or John Woo's face offering many things are ridiculous and also wildly entertaining. But the the the the tut-tutting is what made trump president and maybe the tut-tutting that keeps from present. What I mean by that? Is that the wildness perception. That American politics in the absence from is perfectly healthy organism that American politics without trump is perfectly great and that is just trump who ruined. Everything is such my optic bullcrap. It really is. It's not true at aw if you WanNa talk about the institutions and the people who ruined American politics long before trump came on the scene. You'RE GONNA have to look across the aisle to Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi really let the cat out of the bag the other night eh. She ripped up from state of the Union address. Because she'd been trying to do this whole I'm above all this. I'm I'm so I'm above this. I'm the adult in the room. And then at the end of the state of the Union and in pre preordered fashion ramming. She had she had planned this. She tore up president trump state of the Union address. We know she planned this. Because there's actual video of her free ripping the paper because you WanNa make sure that her hands could actually get through the paper. It's why she knew that she wasn't going to try to rip up the entire speech. She separated into several parts manufacturing. She practiced this thing right so it was preordained. Childishness is preplanned childishness. And this has been the nature of American politics for a long time from not preplanned right. Trump is just. I'm going to go out there and spew childishness but the Democrats. It's been preplanned. It's been organized in. It's been backed by the media so the media were going nuts yesterday. Over president trump say the media before it gets it Pelosi because they're really two suspects aspect in my view in the death of American politics. Has I think trump's the corner not the murderer so core the actual suspects there are two real suspects in my view suspect number one is the media media and suspect number two are the Democrats who were cannon glove with media in the media are suspect because the media have been acting childish since day one. It was the media who are promoting the Bushes Hitler her Bush's awful Bush's lying about the war in Iraq bushes the danger to the community. He's a he's a chimp. He's an idiot. They did the same thing with Ronald Reagan. They've been doing it for decades and then it turns out that the American people bridled against that and they went to other sources of information and the media just doubled down on all of this. The media lost all of their legitimacy long before trump came on scene one again. It's so funny. The media declared trump the murderer of the media because he says be because he says things like fake news all the time they fake news. The Oh my God oh my God attacks on the press press guys. We all knew that you were fake. News trump just set it gave Newt Gingrich said it in two thousand twelve and got a bump in the Republican primaries. They has been a long going narrative on the right and it is not untrue. And we say you're fake news doesn't mean everything that you report is fake. It means that all of you who portray yourselves as the journalistic explainers of the world. All of you who portray yourself as the objective journalists who are attempting to bring fat and separated from opinion. Nearly all of your Democrats and you filter everything through that Democrat Lens. That's what makes you fake news if you if you say your opinion news you're not fake your exactly what you say you are but you know and so this is why everytime trump does something and the media reveal their own biased asked and reveal their own predilections all their doings underscoring why trump is the corner. Not The murderer. So here is here's what. CNN was doing during trump's speech. Yesterday Saturday I mean this was their Kyron right. Is There Chiron. Kyron is supposed to be the objective description of what is going on no editorial ization instead of trump speaks from east east room in acquittal. Celebration there Chiron yesterday said trump vindictive and vulgar in impeachment acquittal. Celebration again that's that's editorializing. It's clear editorializing realizing so. I'm supposed to think that president trump ripping on CNN is somehow inappropriate when CNN is ripping on trump. Now you may think that it was vindictive and vulgar. I mean it was pretty Vindictive v I think it was far less vulgar but regardless that is at its editorialized that is not an objective description of reality at least not again. You WanNa give your opinion. That's fine Don't pretend that that is an objective description of reality and then you had Gloria Borger and Briana Keeler going on trump on CNN yesterday and really just clutching watching their paroles. Not just saying not just rolling okay. That's trumping trump. And that's what trump does instead. It was just. How could anyone to this kind of thing in American politics American politics the home of dignity? How can we do all of us? Come on. You've been watching. The president of the United States with an unscripted vindictive time profane angry rambling response vence to his impeachment. Acquittal started out with the president coming out into the East Room to ruffles and flourishes and then immediately turned into an avalanche of grievance against everybody. It was vindictive as you pointed out it was full of revenge. It was mean-spirited it was poisonous. It was Faisal. Wow can you clutch those pros any hurry. Clutch does pros in your heart. OR THEY'RE GONNA turn into diamonds in seriously. It's it's it's pretty astonishing and again and then when trump says you guys hate me like well. Yeah they they do and they pre existed him okay. CNN was round and criticized. Long before. This I mean I was on CNN in like twenty fourteen before Donald Trump was running for president talking explicitly about the fact that during the Gaza war that was happening between to come out in Israel that come out could not have had better spokespeople than CNN. I mean CNN has been unbiased for an extraordinarily long time. So get the media. Wish to make it that president trump's childishness and vindictiveness and thin-skinned this that all of that is the death of American politics and it's like no trump is is just the symptom and also the coroner of everything that is going on C. N. N.'s. John Harwood doing the same routine so so John Harwood comes out. He says well. This guy is in psychological distress weird weird I don't remember them. psychoanalyzing Barack Obama when he was literally crying during some press conferences about mass shootings and remember them doing a deep dive into his psychology. I just remember them celebrating his motion. I don't remember when Barack Obama was saying things about bringing guns tonight fights politically them. Talking about Barack Obama's vindictive nature or in two thousand thousand nine during the financial meltdown when he suggested that he would let the pitchforks. Have the bankers. I don't remember people in the media suggesting well. Isn't that a vindictive spiteful no then they were busy celebrating Barack Bama it's but when when Donald Trump is donald trump then all of a sudden. We're going to go into full psychological analyses by John Harwood. Who last I checked is not psychologist or psychiatrist? But in any case there was this was a very disturbing Tableau for the country It was dark because he's made clear that his mind minded dark. This is somebody in deep psychological distress right now. Self pitying insecure angry. He said almost plaintively at the end when he I was reading a text from struck to page Where he said I'm a good per I'm not a bad person? He he was sort of imploring people to accept that view of him. And the more that you got from media on a score the more trump dumping all over meteorology. Okay fine okay fine. I mean at least Chris. Matthews says who he is but Chris Matthews lays it out what the media actually thinks. This is where I like. Chris Matthews Chris Matthews in hiding the ball right. I mean Chris Matthews is of the left. He knows he's of the left. He says he's of the Left. It's the the people like Andrew Mitchell proclaimed. They're not of the left or the problem of Chris Matthews. Yesterday's say he's as a cut leader cult leader. Jim Jones feet up really cool eight GONNA die. Jim Jones who supported important half the Democrats in Congress. He's a leader. He's calling for a fight to the death. which by the way would be like amazing power in any case is go go go to the show get rumpled rumpled nick talking about banishing banishing Mitt Romney from the party? That's the language of a cult banishment. It's not a language of the constitutional of our American American tradition. Banishment for the one guy who dared to the United States. Senate vote to convict. I think it's also an attempt by the president. Basically tell his troops. Here's the fighting align right now. We're going after everybody. Who went after us? We're GONNA fight to the death we're GonNa get them so suspect number one in the death of the American political scene the media okay. The media have a lot of blame to Karen. I know they're a bunch of people on the left and they say well yeah. Polarization of the media is the providence polarization. The media is not the problem dishonesty in the media is the problem and there are people out there on the left side. Will you have left. Is Cheers Tumbler. On your on your table. Aren't you contributing to the death of American politics. No I'm honest about who we are over here right. We don't really like the political left very much by which I mean not liberals but people who is to shutdown debate people who believe that people should be a platform for having a finally eight and absolutely mainstream point of view. I'd rather than everybody be honest like Chris Matthews than dishonest like the folks over at CNN. Okay so suspect. Number one members of the media get suspect number two in just one second. "You're listening to the takeout from CBS News Radio, and I'm Stephen Portnoy from CBS News Radio, the White House correspondent who sits right behind major Garrett in the briefing room as major Garrett is the author of the new book. Mr. Trump's wild ride. A fantastic book had takes you inside some of the crazier twists and turns of the last eighteen months and and the ones that were stand the test of time, you know, ones that are history, and if I could say something semen on behalf of both of us, I just want to thank our audience on CBS early podcast adopters and on more than forty radio stations around the country. You get the vibe of the show. The show does not pander to you, ideologically allows you and requires you to listen to people on the right on the left and the centre, and I just wanna thank you for picking up on what this show tries to do. And if you have a modicum of respect or appreciation for what this tro to show strives to be. It's all in the book what the show strives to be replicated in the book. And that's the best advertiser not give work. Well, I'll second all this points. One of the things we were talking about for the break that I learned that I didn't know now is that in may of twenty seventeen around the time that Robert Mueller was appointed as a special very day the very day Jeff Sessions, the attorney general who so aggravated the president by his decision, recuse himself from the rest of education actually submitted his resignation and wound up in a car in the west executive draw Choubey black SUV that all government officials ride around in Washington. You call the chapter ten days in may. I dare say it's the wildest turn and Mr. Trump's wild Rivage agree with that. It was certainly the ten days I remember most vividly and I felt most overwrought at the end of begin so much exhaustion, physical exhaustion, emotional trauma because I never seen it before. And part of that is. So Ryan sprees, the chief of staff is informed that a special counsel Robert Muller has been named Robert Muller who had been interviewed the day before by the president as a possible. New FBI director is name special counsel and Jeff Sessions submits his resignation. His real live written resignation to the president and then leaves the White House and writes, previous the cheapest finds out about it and starts looking for Jeff Sessions. Reinsch previous at this moment, hearing that the sitting attorney general has just quit at is roaming the grounds of the White House yet stop. Where is he? Where is he? Where is he? And he runs out to west exac, which is the small driveway. From which many people who enter the White House. Do. So it's ripe between the executive, whether the west wing and the old executive office building right across the west, any fines, Jeff Sessions inside his SUV and implores him to come back inside so they can have a conversation. And essentially as I relate in the book, the chief of staff talks Jeff Sessions off this resignation. Ledge, one of the many eye-popping revelations that will have readers of your new book really bewildered by that story has been told before in a book by Chris Whipple who writes about chiefs of staff, but more details in my book. I don't want to suggest that everything is a revelation. I don't want to oversell who I am or what I've done. I want credit those who have been there before, but I am one hundred percent confident in this rendering and that it was a significant moment in the history of the Trump president and example of fairness in full disclosure that readers will find in your new book. But you mentioned Ryan spree is one of the several officials who spoke to you on. The record in this book every others and household names at that you spoke at Tycom John Dowd, Jared, Kushner, Jared, Kushner, Mick Mulvaney, Mark short, Mitch, McConnell nights. Previous I mentioned John Kelly was Lou douse today bossy. Lots of people who respected me as a professional as someone who was curious and rigorous..

"About the fact that Jeff Sessions, the sitting attorney general actually submitted his resignation to the president and quit his job when out to the west executive drive and had to be coaxed out of the car to rescind his resignation, or we'll talk about that on the other side of this break. I major Garrett was even Portnoy. Now, an excerpt from the audio book of Mr. Trump's wild ride Trump watches an inordinate amount of television or as former White House lawyer Taikang told me a load of television from cobb's charitable point of view. That makes Trump a great multitasker. The first year of his presidency would be defined by multiple tasks. He said in motion and the many mistakes he committed because he watched a load of television what he sees in what he watches about world events and him can drive policy. The first Syria missile strike is a classic example. The image is horrified Trump. He wanted to rapidly flip the chemical weapons script inherited from President Obama. He launched Tomahawk missiles, and for his first year that became a plot point, luster tiv- of his decisive leadership courage in a cocoon of cable coverage. His worldview is not only shaped by television. Vision, his judgment of and reaction to events, true or false are reinforced almost entirely by TV Trump gathers information and other ways, of course, but TV is Trump and Trump is TV..

One of the things I learned very early on was what a serious journalism journalists you are an and and even at five AM right to come in at that hour of the morning, talked on it, but it is the high honor of my career to be sitting here next to you to talk about your work. Thank you. Mr. Trump's wild ride. Thank you may know as viewers of CBS or listeners to our CBS News Radio, takeout, affiliates. I'm the White House correspondent CBS News Radio, yes, you are. The man who sits behind major Garrett trying intently to stare at the podium and not behind any in your head. Yes. You asked him. Classic eight questions. You do, sir. I appreciate that. Thank you very much. Just trying to follow your lead and if you haven't seen it yet. Go on the Google machine and find lip reading. Sarah Sanders catch a teeny bit of me and a great swath of the immense talent that is known as Stephen Portnoy. Why are you saying this. Just bring the nachos, right, you'll get it folks made you, you won't regret it. Google major Garrett is our host and our guest tonight and what am I doing? I'm signing as we speak because you gotta read you do with the marketing department, tells you to do the takeout podcasting or plug your booth announcer will read this copy if you like a sticker signed by the guest of this week's pro right now on camera, and you'll request along with the self addressed stamped on vote to take address takeout sticker care, CBS news, twenty twenty m street, northwest, that's m. as in many will enter, you will win Washington DC to double-o three, six. And now just watch me, sign them folk. And now Bob Barker it is regrowed we now we continue our conversation with the author of Mr. Trump's wild ride. And before we broke, if you remember, we played a sound bite of the president, late January, twenty seventeen scientists. I travel ban order, and here's what it led to Jamie sought. Number four. There was chaos and confusion airports today as President Trump's immigration crackdown took effect protests erupted as refugees and immigrants from several Muslim-majority countries were detained or blocked from flights major, which learned in researching your book that we did not know about how that came together. Two very important things. One, the president was presented eight options for this travel ban eight different options. He chose the least restrictive of the eight print. Print place before him, they will least restrictive of the eight. So you have come to know that there were seven more restrictive options that Donald floor countries more restrictions. Was this process thoroughly vetted throughout the ministry answer? No, that's pretty clear. And one of the questions the country's been sort of kicking around for the last two weeks in part because of the op Ed anonymously written in the New York Times. And by that other book written by b, w. Is there a process that's a bit chaotic. Look, ladies and gentlemen. The travel ban is a living breathing publicly. Adjudicated example of that. I'd impetuous driving intense president says, go and they go, I quote, Newt Gingrich in the book saying, you know, they did both things hurriedly because of you spend time getting it right, you lose the boldness. That's a general description on exact quote, but it captures the essence. Then there was a redrafting of the executor, which Trump didn't even like and said so publicly. Then there was a memorandum backing it up three stages, all the played out in public view, all subjected to court scrutiny in the end of memorandum that reinforce the first two executive orders withstood not one, but two passes before the United States Supreme court. And what does. Trump do now. Calera declare absolute victory. Why? Because he doesn't count losses. I also quote, former speaker Newt Gingrich why? Because he is a frequent regular adviser and confidante of the president. What is Newt Gingrich say about Donald Trump. He never counts the losses only the wins. He only counts the victories. So is this a Catholic process? Does it sort of jumble and jostle along the rails of governing? Yes, it does. You don't have to ask yourself. I wonder if that's true. Look at the travel ban. The travel ban is from beginning to end which goes into twenty eighteen an absolute illustration of how this process both to some doesn't work and to some does work..

"This works in that area the case right i mean one theory is that there was a vacation and a lot of coincidences nothing bad happened and we've reported that theory another theory of the case is that were shenanigans but how does it work is it some sort of bribery collusion pile on where they get wind of what other allies on their side of the ledger doing and they say oh this looks like a an effort way to get influence with these relative novices might end up in charge of us policy or how does this actually play out so we're obviously into the realm of informed speculation are at this point but don't forget the new york's what i do baby okay well let's do it the new york times has reported nbc news is not confirmed about another trump tower meeting where the maradas air prints of blackwater fame who was also at this sales meeting was there with the emirati george nader and they offered essentially to help the trump campaign and so the question here is were they helping during the election did they step in after the election to try to broker a back channel so the russians could could essentially seek to extract concessions if they were looking for in exchange for the help they provided the trump team during the election these are all questions that we think the mo team is asking betsy i think one thing that's really important about this story that i sort of buried several paragraphs down is that there was a separate counterintelligence investigation specifically looking into the influence operations that the murat he's had in place going into the two thousand sixteen presidential election that's really important because what that means is that this is no longer just the russia investigation this is the foreign influence investigation another piece of this it's really important is the extent to which this is likely to raise temperatures in the white house one thing i can tell you that the single biggest.
