The Suitcase Murder
"My name is Meghan Sacks criminologist at Fairleigh Dickinson University. In simplest terms criminology is the scientific study of what causes crime and how the criminal justice system. Response. To crime. Ridden about twenty, five true crime books over the years and I think many maguire is perhaps one of the most interesting ones and baffling. This is Melanie. McGuire arrested today minutes after dropping offer children in daycare. Melanie, McGuire a New Jersey nurse was accused of killing her husband cutting up his body and throwing it into the Chesapeake Bay. In two thousand, seven, what was being called? The suitcase murder trial was generating an enormous amount of media attention, not just in New Jersey, but all across the country three bazaar discoveries, three separate suitcases, all containing human remains the woman who is on trial for her very life. She says the real truth behind the crime has never been revealed with no history of violence and no apparent motive for murder. Could she really have done it? She was this beautiful young nurse and they were the seemingly normal middle class couple and the murder happened in such a grisly way. The idea that this beautiful nurse could have actually killed her husband and then cut him up is just incredible. Of course, they were salacious aspects. Maguire is a nurse and prosecutors say she had an affair with a doctor. She didn't fit the profile I. Guess of a murderer over the years and colleagues of ours have come to me and said, you know Melanie McGuire proclaims her innocence and to tell her story I started thinking Oh maybe there is a little more to this case than what you see on the surface and then the idea podcast came up and I was all in on direct appeal examined the murder conviction of Melanie, McGuire him following a highly publicized trial looking at the evidence that was presented and the evidence that may have seemed insignificant at the time before own conclusion about Melanie's guilt. We hear at ABC have our own history with the Melanie. McGuire case back in two thousand, seven ABC's Cynthia McFadden had the first on camera interview at the mother of two on trial for murdering her husband. Who was the Melanie? McGuire you hope to jury. knows. The one who tried to take care of everybody. Who didn't make the smartest decisions but admitted to those mistakes? To the people she trusted most. But. Did Not admit what what she's acute stuff. I have been incarcerated for twelve and a half going on thirteen years now. Do. You still insist that you're innocent. Absolutely. You're sitting here. A wrongfully convicted person. Correct. Absolutely and what have those years spend like? I tell people. It's not as bad as you think in some ways and it's so much worse than I could ever articulate in others. After all these years I. Still feel her I still feel bothered. I still feel like how could somebody think? That I did that. This whole saga begins on May. Fifth two thousand four with an odd discovery in Virginia Beach. Early morning a couple of fishermen and the kids are out on a boat by the Chesapeake Bay. Me and my friend Don Connors was going to go out fishing and we both had days off D. or Don. We Call Them D. said, keep his kids out of school. We're GONNA take him fishing. Everybody was excited. We went right out this bridge here. and to keep on going you run right in the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. In the Chesapeake Bay Bridge tunnel is seventeen and a half miles long. It really is quite astonishing. It connects the eastern shore of Virginia to Virginia Beach has two tunnels, two shipping channels, and then once you get on the other side, you go North into Maryland Delaware New Jersey.

Thanks Greg according to a two thousand seventeen study from Yale University psychiatrists the hallucinatory. The only explanation Suzanne had for her childhood premonitions was clear audience however, the frequency of Suzanne's voices and later visual hallucinations suggests she was suffering from a mental health disorder of some kind former FBI criminal profiler. Delong speculates that Suzanne may have had schizophrenia which is marked by auditory and visual hallucinations. In any case, Suzanne seemed to suffer from a form of psychosis still undiagnosed young Suzanne built or identity around what she believed were her psychic powers to her the visions and voices that played out in her head were glimpses into the past and future. These supposed predictive powers made the world feel different to Suzanne. The people around her glimmered with after images only she could see and echoed with voices audible only to her even at a young age. This second sight made her feel separate from other children. The Axeman of New Orleans
"All right folks settle in because today we're in. New Orleans. So, nineteen eighteen to nineteen nineteen I'll carry we've got some pretty big stuff going on here. There's a lot of names. And quite frankly there's just a lot of information so I'm really just going to go. Bare. Bones. Here's the information kinda thing. Okay. That makes sense. Perfect. So. New Orleans. We're in nineteen eighteen. For, those of you who don't know our New Orleans is it's in Louisiana. Continuing may twenty third of nineteen eighteen? So it is sticky hot in Louisiana New Orleans. For, those of you who don't come from the south of the United States, it gets a really stupid humid and really stupid around this. Time of year okay. Like, miserable miserable like it's weather you wear as what we say it's growth. -actly. But. Honestly I don't know if it was any different back then you know climate change and all that. Probably not. Anyway so During this time. The town of New Orleans was. Just. Terrified for their lives and I'm going to get into exactly why here in a moment but Let's talk about. The first victim occur. Protect Victims I. Guess. So we've got Joseph and Katherine go on May Twenty Third Nineteen eighteen like I said. They owned a grocery store and they lived in a little apartment like above the. Grocery. Store. They were both Italian Americans hard working they. Were pretty much part of the community I mean they own a grocery store so You know people know him some people like them. It was also a weird time. and. that. It was a time that was. Racially. Distraught almost people didn't necessarily Really. Get along with other races. Sure, so you know. We can relate. Yeah. It doesn't feel that different from now. Yeah. Yeah. So it's nice to know that one hundred years ago. People were still stupid yet. So. They own this grocery store they lived above it and the night of May twenty third they. Were attacked in their, apartment? He had his skull fractured by his own acts and his throat was slit with razor. And she. Her throat had also been cut. And she actually died choking on her own blood. Oh my gosh. How terrifying? Yeah. That was the first of the whole thing and it was absolutely terrible. So you'll hear a lot of me saying that the victim owned their axe on the acts that. was used against them or that there was a panel chiseled out of. One of the doors to get into the house. Okay. Okay. Intriguing. Yeah. So just keep ears out for that. Okay, they're ready they're ready and prepared. Okay. So. The MAGGIO's died. I two victims right there came. Okay both Italian. Americans. Now. We've got to other people. On June twenty seventh Lewis, Bessemer and his mistress Harriet low. were. Sleeping. In. Bed. As. One does. and. late in the night they you know got their heads bashed in by Bessemer. Zone acts. He actually was very fortunate and that he live unfortunately Harry it did in fact die. Oh my goodness. That makes three actual victims. One is living. I wonder how all Lewis survived that. Girl. I don't know but I think people back in the day had very hard heads because there's a few more that. Show my goodness. Okay boiler but. I'm like, how on Earth do you live through? An axe bashing your head in. Yeah. No kidding. That's insane. So. Just tally up the count again, we've got four victims. Re Dead. came. So he's got a pretty good running. Statistic. Yep. Next we have Anna Schneider. On August fifth. Anna was. Asleep. She was also eight months pregnant. She was no. Yeah. She was twenty eight years old and she lived on L. Myra, street which I only put in because I used to live on an. L., Myra straight. That's crazy. What a weird coincidence I know. Anyway so Anish neider was home alone. Her husband was off working late and so she. Has I'm assuming eight months pregnant ladies are got tired and so she
The Veronica Blumhorst Case
"Very fascinating case on our hands Veronica is missing. And pretty quickly, we have a very suspicious suspect and her boyfriend, Jeff well, where we left off, Veronica bloomers has been missing for fourteen years. By this point, the Mendota Police Department gave Veronica's family access to her case file, and in that file, it contained a report the Veronica's Boyfriend Jeff an interview made strange statements and throughout some concerning hypotheticals. That basically added up to Veronica was hurt and killed and placed somewhere that no, one would find her and there were reasons why jeff could be responsible for this. Again, this is Jeff statements after hours of being interviewed with no recording of any kind to back any of this up and all in a report written after the interview. And the case file report went on to state that according to people who knew Jeff. After Veronica vanished the Jeff Voice two theories he liked to share about what had happened to Veronica. The I was that he thought maybe she went to track down her birth parents. and. They were not happy about this and they did something to her. The second theory was that perhaps an ex boyfriend had her because he was jealous and the ex decided if he couldn't have her no one could. This is all a bit strange to me here captain because let's let's pretend for a second that jeff is. Perfectly innocent. The theories don't seem to be they don't seem to carry water very well do they like the first one of her tracking down her birth parents again, I'm getting the impression time and time again with Veronica that she is an open book her family knew what she was up to what she was into her coworkers were always told what her plans were. Yeah, and question. Who took her to find her parents? She left her car like if her car was gone maybe that somewhat of a plausible theory, but you also leave at one am in the morning. Go. Find your birth parents to doesn't make a lot of sense right? Poor timing and top that off. Maybe she didn't WanNa hurt her parents her adopted parents feelings. For whatever reason But again, this is unique situation where she has an older sister who's adopted as well. She could have bounced this idea off of her and they were close and I don't see why she wouldn't and then take it a step further. Why would the parents decide to hurt her and do something terrible to her? Makes no sense. Wouldn't you just say go away you know we don't. We don't have any life with you. you know that so that doesn't seem to carry much water, but then you do have the ex-boyfriend. Theory maybe that is something that. That Jeff was was right about on this. Okay. So the story goes that she dated this police officer, he became chief. And they only went on a few dates and he was kind of possessive and was also like saying, well, maybe you should. Wear this outfit or where these types of close. So. It ended as quickly as it began So and there's no evidence that after they broke up that this guy was in the picture anymore. Right. Right. So I do like that theory of an ex or something of that nature. But again, then you have to wonder is this just jeff coming up with alternative? Theories that do not involve him being the bad guy. But he also came up with some theories that he is the bad guy while maybe our thought she was pregnant maybe I pushed her maybe I hit her. So much so that they looked at his family's property they did not find anything. Now I believe that Jeff took a lie detector at some point.

The Shergar Case
"In nineteen twenty, the country of Ireland consisted of two self-governing territories. Northern Ireland and southern Ireland both of which belonged to the United Kingdom. Following the war of independence and the anglo-irish trading of Nineteen Twenty, one southern Ireland declared independence from the UK and became the Republic of Ireland while no, the norlander remained under. British Rue. This partitioning caused great conflict between the two regions with the Irish nationalists in the Republic wanting all of island to bay reunified as an independent country. Well, unionists in the north didn't agree. Many inhabitants of Northern Ireland were descended from English ancestors and Dente more is British instead of Irish hence their loyalty to the UK. The fact that the unionists were mainly of Protestant background while the nationalists were predominantly Catholic, only food that avoid. inau nineteen, Sixty, eight, a period known as the troubles began mocking a battle for control between those who thought Northern Ireland should be returned to the republic and to those who felt it should remain under British rule. Leading the charge was the Irish Republican Army or IRA also as the Provisional Irish Republican Army. IRA was an illegal paramilitary organization whose primary goal was divorced. The United Kingdom to negotiate a withdrawal from Northern Ireland. They sought to bring about unification of Ireland, through any Maine's including violence and terrorism. When the troubles began fighting between the IRA and British soldiers from Northern Ireland was at an all time high. Over the years the IRA bombed political and economic targets across Northern Ireland and England using guerrilla tactics in both a and and rural areas. is of extreme protesting and violence had culminated in low morale and widespread despair throughout island and the economy was in trouble resulting in high unemployment rights and mass emigration? Yet one industry that continued to thrive was horse racing, which provided twenty thousand jobs and attracted large sums of money from overseas. In nineteen ninety, an Irish racehorse named sugar took the industry boss storm becoming a racing champion and national treasure. Dra public, adored Shergar, and watching him achieve great success provided a much-needed distraction from the troubles. A Bad Day IN Austin
"Thursday. May Eighteenth. Nineteen. Seventy. Austin Texas. It's just after midnight when twenty six year old patrolman. Ralph NATO. Stopped. A Red Nineteen, sixty, six Mustang. On East Live Oak Street. Near Travis Heights Boulevard. The officer called in a code for routine traffic violation check. The officer approached the vehicle. The driver was a young woman. Sheila Maynard. Sitting. Shotgun was a white male in his late twenties. The officer obtained their names and information and walked back to his patrol car. Officer abloh NATO wrote Michener a ticket for driving without a license Iran a radio check on the passenger David. Lee Pow. The check came back the POW twenty seven years of age was a wanted man. Wanted for some minor infractions, misdemeanor theft, and too hot check charges. Abloh NATO. Got Out of his patrol car. And once again, he approached the vehicle, the officer was hit with automatic gunfire coming from the vehicle in front of him. The shots. Knocked out the rear window of the Mustang. The officer was hit several times in the arm and chest. His bulletproof vest that he was wearing, which was standard procedure for Austin patrolman and seventy eight. was really no match for the high powered gunfire. abloh. NATO went. down. The Mustang drove off. Somehow. abloh. NATO was able to send out a distress call. Austin PD officers rushed to the scene. Officer Joe Villegas spotted the sixty six Mustang about two blocks away. In the parking lot of the, Travis Park Apartments. Bogus pushed the pedal to the floor approaching the park vehicle at a high rate of speed. As he got closer. Shots were fired coming from the Mustang. Villegas was able to avoid being hit. He slammed on the brakes and returned fire. Then David Lee POW still in the passenger seat. pulled. The pin from a hand grenade and tossed it at Villegas thankfully, if failed to explode. Then, the woman. Sheila. Maynard. Jumped out of the vehicle with their hands raised high screaming at the officer. She surrendered. POW, flung open the passenger door and ran for the woods. By now. swelled. Thirty. AM. Officer, Ralph Abloh NATO. was rushed to the nearest hospital. Officer Abloh NATO died shortly after arrival. About twenty-five police in at least two armed security officers surrounded the woods. which was estimated to be a mile long and half a mile wide. They stopped dozens of cars and pedestrians. They waited and waited. But David Powell never came out. Just after six am. And we decided that six police to canine officers would enter the woods and go in there and get POW. The remaining police were to maintain the perimeter. They wanted only a small amount of police officers to enter the woods to minimize the risk. They decided that no one else was to enter. They needed a set number of officers only. That way. If they saw any movement at all, they would know immediately, it was not a fellow officer. In other words, they were prepared to shoot on sight. The two dogs and six officers entered the woods with flak jackets and loaded shotguns. To armed security guards who shifts ended hours ago but decided to stay and assist the police in any way they could. Now. Decided, it was time to call it a night and let the police do their jobs. Guards Charles Howard. Gary Nelson. We're now near Travis high. When they spotted movement. The two guards with pistols drawn move slowly toward something they saw moving in the bushes. A man crouch down trying to conceal himself. At a distance of about three feet, one of the guards a stern voice instructed the man to come out. Before standing up. The man said, loudly, his voice shaking I'm not going to do anything. And he slowly emerged from the bushes. The guards handcuffed him and called the police.
The Case Of Chad And Lori Daybell
"Dick I feel like we've kind of been just living this case the last several days there's so much that we had to delve into. So let's just start with an overview of the timeline going back to the beginning because it's very complicated and as much for me as for the listeners a little review and a little in-depth investigation into these things would be helpful both helpful the me. We did last week's first part of this and I'm just at the time you do it do the recording. It sounds reasonable. Then as I think back about it, I'm trying to say what happened when who did what? So. This'll be very helpful. It's a crazy thing and of course, with the tragic ending, which is horrible. So. Let's go back to Chad Day Bell. He married his first wife Tammy in nineteen ninety and they had five children together over the years in Nineteen ninety-two Laurie got married for the first time at age eighteen and this marriage only lasted a very short time under a year from what I've heard. Then she remarried in nineteen ninety five and that's when she gave birth to her son Colby in nineteen, ninety six. Again, she got divorced then in two, thousand one, she married Joseph Ruin and Laurie and Joe had their daughter Kylie together in two thousand and two, and just a little bit of a word about Tyler's childhood. We we know that she was used as a pawn by Laurie and her divorce custody filings against Joe Ryan. But there's also some evidence fairly convincing evidence that Laurie mains have had Munchausen by proxy pilot who's in and out of the hospital many times, and she even had exploratory surgery to quote figure out what was wrong unquote and that's something that just. Really isn done nowadays, right? No, it isn't that if we go back a few years that was something I mean if if you have parent who keeps bringing a child into the office bureau for various complaints and you have run tests and nothing ever shows up, you might have considered doing an exploratory bit of surgery as probably a what's called a lap me. Where they look inside the the belly at the F. Domino contents and maybe take biopsies just to see if there was something that they had missed Leah from my experience on a pediatric surgical floor though they only do that when they're like at the end of their rope, this is after days of observing taking the kid off of a regular diet doing. IV fluids run, they do a lot of things I and the munch just love to hang out in the room for days and get the attention. So this is very classic Munchausen by proxy behavior who certainly is yet it really is and no illness was ever determined, which is significant I think road even with the surgery. Yes. So so there you go. Exactly. Nine, two, thousand when Tyler was about six, her therapist raised concerns about the stress Tyler was going through with her health issues and the custody issues. Tally, did say to the therapist that she did enjoy visits with her father. There were documented concerns about Laurie being dishonest on Tyler's intake forms. One of these things whereas where Lori said, the tally had pancreatitis. The custody documents I was able to peruse showed that Kylie did say she enjoyed visits with her father but then she told the therapist that she was frightened to stay overnight because her father molested her now she used the word molested and when her mom came into the room with her and the therapist apparently tie looked at Lori and said I, told her. So it just really I'm not convinced that Joe sexually abused tightly and I'll always believe someone until I have reason not to especially a child but there were some classic signs of the Mother Coaching her. So in two thousand, four, Laurean Joe were divorced and Laurie remarried Charles Valo in two, thousand six. Now for those of you who are counting Charles's husband number four. Yes, and in two thousand, twelve, a little boy named Joshua. Jackson was born he's he's the biological child of Charles Valez nephew his grandparents cared for jj until they made the decision along with Lori and. Charles that Lori Charles would adopt and raise JJ, and this was back in two thousand fourteen. Laurie already had colby and entirely. So the grandparents K. and Larry Woodcock were really thinking that they might have a better home there because there'd be other kids. It's kind of their little bit younger than Larry and K. so laurie who they thought was just a wonderful mom. At, the time agreed to adopt the little boy with Charles and then Laurie Charles entirely moved to Hawaii along with JJ services in two thousand fourteen when the adoption went through the options gone through and we've Kurt the family now lorries. Oldest son is what out of the house at this point because he's like eighteen nineteen, he didn't move to Hawaii with them now. He didn't in two thousand fifteen back to Chad, Tammy and the family moved to Idaho from Utah Right, in two years later, the veil of family moved back to Arizona, from Hawaii then on April third two, thousand, eighteen lorries, ex husband, her third husband Joseph Ryan was found dead in his home Laurie was notified as she was still listed as his next of kin. Didn't notify Joe's sister Anne who by all accounts she was very close to Anne was still a part of tiles life, your birth Maurice to ruin agenda Yes. I know we've talked about this a little bit in part one, but you did get a chance to review the autopsy. They were a few things that stuck out to us like the fact that the height was off and they call them a heavyset guy which he really wasn't. No. But remember he was in his apartment for at least a week decomposing before anyone found was a neighbor who found him that's correct. Yes and we don't have the entire autopsy but the cause of death was per tiriac sclerotic heart disease, which means that you're coronary arteries getting clogged up, which isn't really crazy for a fifty nine year old man to die of in general but

But bungalows too young and innocent cynical thoughts. She is -tective anthropologist a treasure hunter. It's a peculiar family outing but for. Everything is an adventure. Plants Flowers in the front garden anew house with him Mom's sister and dad when they install a water fountain. It was raining on the morning of Thursday June two thousand eleven bong eight egg gro soup for breakfast. Then set off the school. Let around half Pasta cooling out by mom see you later as she left. The Khun Sa Files
"At the end of January nineteen, eighty to the forty eight year old coon saw lost almost everything. In a matter of days, the empire he'd spent years building had fallen since his escape from house arrest in nineteen, seventy, six Kuhn saw had risen to become one of the most powerful and infamous drug lords in the world from his base in northern Thailand. He trafficked opium out of Burma refined it into heroin and sold it to organized crime outfits across. Southeast. Asia approximately seventy five percent of the world's heroin was coming out of the region. Much of it. Thanks to Kuhn saw, and he was able to do it all with the help of the Thai government and Sean State Freedom Fighters. But in the early nineteen eighties, his luck ran out at the behest of the United States his type benefactors turned on him. And on January Twenty First Nineteen eighty-two the time military descended upon his headquarters in the town of Bond Hint Tech faced with complete annihilation. GHUNSA had no choice but to flee back to Burma taking the remains of his private army with him. They left behind fifteen tons of weaponry and millions of dollars worth of heroin processing equipment as bad as these hits were coon son knew that far more damaging was the loss of the Thai government's support without their protection coon saw was significantly weaker and everyone knew it January twenty first proved that his militia was no match for a real military. Embarrassed and betrayed ghunsa swore he wouldn't let himself be beaten. So easily he was still the self proclaimed King of the Golden Triangle and a world renowned freedom fighter. He would just have to figure out how to rebuild his operation in Burma. The problem with going back to Burma was that he was essentially a fugitive there. But looking at the political landscape, he decided to take a gamble. The Burmese military dictatorship was embroiled in ongoing battles with the Communist Party of Burma and a number of regional separatist groups. Despite his relatively high profile. Kuhn, saw wouldn't be the government's first priority a more difficult problem for him would be rebuilding his army. The only way he was going to hold onto his share of the drug market much less survive in war-torn northeast, Burma was through military strength. Kuhn. Saw and his Sean United Army started going after smaller drug organizations on the Burmese side of the border with each victory. The losing soldiers defected to Kuhn saw as they swept through the region, they secure key trafficking routes and territory for new heroin refineries. Seeing, just how quickly and forcefully Kuhn saw was able to rebuild the Taya Thirties realized they'd have to make amends with him. They appreciated that he was keeping the Burmese side of the border under control by taking over all the warring groups and their financial stakes in the heroine industry also meant they wanted to get back on the drug lords good side. They just needed to convince coon saw that it would be more lucrative for him to forgive and forget their trail luckily for the Thai officials coon Saws Pragmatism won out over his anger. In return for his forgiveness though he required that the Thai government's recognize him as the sole figurehead of the Sean State Independence Movement? This would legitimize his role as a freedom fighter on the international stage. However, in the years, he'd been in Thailand other Sean separatist groups with stronger ideological roots had expanded their bases in Burma. In particular the Sean State Army with whom Koon saw had an on again off again, relationship had become a military and political force to be reckoned with. If Kuhn saw wanted to even be the nominal leader of the rebel movement he was going to have to eliminate them. February nineteen eighty-three Kuhn saw shan united. Army. Swept into the homeowner valley whether Sean States Army kept its main base. It's close proximity to Thailand provided an easy escape route in case of attack from the Burmese government. But for Kuhn, saw, the valley was also prime real estate for opium trafficking coon says, troops faced little resistance the Shan State Army immediately realized they were outmatched and retreated Kuhn saw walked right in and took control of the home. Valley. In the village of Ho Mong he established his new headquarters declaring it the new capital of the future, a Free Sean State, but he wasn't finished coon sauce and a handful of his most trusted men into northern Thailand and assassinated several sean independence leaders. By the summer of Nineteen eighty-three, he had made himself one of the only viable leaders of the Sean 'cause and reclaimed his place atop the opium trade.
Eric Edgar Cooke Is The Night Caller
"In January of Nineteen Fifty, nine, twenty, eight year old Eric Cook was in pain. His face was in fresh scratches drawing even more attention to his recognizable harelips features. If anyone asked what happened, Cook blame the scratch marks on his eldest son who was developmentally handicapped while Cook blamed his son for his injuries. The true culprit was thirty-three-year-old Pnina Berkman when Cook attacked Panini in her apartment on January twenty ninth she fought back her long manicured nails gouged his face as she tried desperately to repel. In the end, it was a fight, Pennino couldn't win. She died under living room floor after cook ran from the flat. The city of Perth Austrailia was rocked by the shocking murder and leads quickly dried up cook left now, prints and DNA technology was too rudimentary to conclusively tiny one to the blood under Pineda's nails residents in the Wembley area reported seeing Prowler in the neighborhood on nights leading up to the attack but no one could give a clear description of the man so as. Long as he kept his head down, Cook was in the clear and that's just what he did for the next six months. Cook was relatively inactive but by August he couldn't control his urges any longer be eighth. He left his wife Sally at home with their children and set off into the shadows he ended up in the affluent area of Midland's the suburb was popular with students of the nearby university making it a prime target for cook who loved to Peek in windows at potential targets. One. Such student was seventeen year old Alex Don, who was spending the night alone at her sister's apartment as Alex slept twenty nine year old cook made his way around the building. Until he found an open window, it was too small and high to be an obvious entry point, which is probably why anyone neglected to close it. But Cook wasn't deterred once he managed to scramble through the window he rifled through Alex's purse taking what little money the nursing student had. But even as experienced and quiet as cook was the teen woke up panicking cook seized something heavy, perhaps a fire poker and Hit over the head knocking her out, not wanting to wait for the girl to wake up cook left the way he came in Alex was left alone until the next morning when friends arrived in rushed to the hospital in addition to a nasty Gash above her I Alex suffered a fractured skull and was left with a severe form of epilepsy that derailed her career aspirations and would affect her for the rest of her life. Not that Eric Cook had any cares about the woman who's life he just ruined by the time Alex finally left the hospital in September he'd already moved onto a fresh. Suburb. Full of new houses and clueless victims for the prolific cat burglar a few months. Later, his new favourite haunt was the wealthy neighborhood of Brookwood flats on an early visit to one building. He stole a key from the ground floor apartment of Betty Johnston then returned to burgle the place of few times. Betty's next door neighbor was twenty, two year old daughter, Jillian brewer and terrier designer. Jillian caught cooks I on one of his visits and he took pleasure watching through the window as the young woman had sex with her fiance. But watching evidently wasn't enough Vanessa's going to take over on. The psychology here, and throughout the episode please note Vanessa is not a licensed psychologist or a psychiatrist but she has done a lot of research for the show thanks Greg in a later assessment of his psychological development Dr Aaron. Samuel Ellis stated that Cook was sexually naive and afraid of women who might conceivably test his sexual adequacy. It's possible that this misguided fear or hatred of a sexually confident unmarried woman caused cooks thoughts to turn to violence. This theory aligns with cooks first murder victim Panini Berkman who had no qualms about having sex outside of wedlock and even had the gall to sleep naked.
Doomsday Parents, Chad And Lori Daybell
"Laurie Velo Bouza forty, six year old mother of three married a fifty one year old father of five Chad Day bill. On November fifth two thousand nineteen in Kauai Hawaii. Chad's wife for close to thirty years. Tammy. Day. Bill have been found dead in her home just two weeks earlier. So obviously, they didn't waste much time remarrying. Stunningly Quick Tammy was in apparently healthy forty, nine year old woman infectious training for a marathon. Just, ten days before her death, which was October ninth two, thousand, Nineteen Tammy reported on facebook and the police that masked man had shouted her with what she thought could be a paint gun what's going on there right? Exactly. The other very interesting aspect is Laurie and Chad had picked out and ordered their wedding bands more than two weeks before Tammy Steph. That's right. Shoe on that one for a while right so October fourth to fifth tammy visited her parents Beck in Springville. Utah, where she's from and then a few days later on October nine, a man ski mask was shooting at her so I guess the police decided it was just some kind of prank because she thought it was a paint gun and they never found the guy, but it's very curious. WHOA, it is and it's really just the tip of the iceberg in this really strange case with all the suspicious occurrences just everything surrounding lawyer and Chad, his mess and very suspicious of course. Yes that's an understatement. So Chad Chad Day Bell is lawry's fifth husband. Laurie was born Laurie Noreen Cox June twenty sixth of Nineteen seventy-three in San Bernardino California and she grew up with two brothers Alex and Adam and two sisters Stacey and summer Alex Cox plays a really large role in this whole story so you need to remember him Adam lives in Kansas and he's worked as a radio personality, but he's pretty much out of the whole seen as far as we know so far. Stacy Cox died in her parents home when she was just twenty two years old and this was from complications of type one diabetes lorries remaining living sister Cox shift. Let was one of lorries, biggest defenders until June of this year, and that's when the remains of her children jj entirely were discovered on the property of Chad debacle. Now, people who knew Lori will have said that she really became a person after she became involved with shed she had been considered an excellent mother. And a good friend to many many years ago back in high school Lori was a happy energetic cheerleader at nineteen years of age. She married her high school sweetheart Nelson Jawans. This marriage is over within a year. Then when she was twenty two in Nineteen ninety-five Laurie Mary twenty-three-year-old. William but Sheila, and this marriage was in Travis County Texas. They had a son named Colby in one, thousand, nine, hundred, ninety six, and they ended up divorcing in nineteen. Ninety eight. So, by the time, she was twenty five years old she'd been married and divorced twice already. See and she has one child, and then in two thousand. One Lori Mary Joseph Ryan Joe Converted to Mormonism, and that was the religion it Laurie had been raised in. He didn't legally adopt coby coby took his last name. and. He and Laurie had a daughter together. That's highly in two, thousand, two and two, thousand, four in August Joe filed for divorce from Laurie. And it was finalized in two thousand five. In two, thousand, six, Joe Ryan filed a complaint with the court stating Lori was not complying with the visitation order. He asked she'd be held in contempt then August two, thousand, seven Joe is attacked by Laura's brother Alex. For. This guy chases show around with stun gun. He tased him twice and he threatened to kill him. Yes. So I'm going to ask probably a stupid question is this because of the divorce or because he took her back to court. I'm thinking it was related to the custody issue because the divorce was already finalized been finalized for over a year. But you know she was also looking at some trouble because she was in contempt of court. She wasn't bringing tighly for her visits and she was keeping tidily away from him. So, Alex Laura's brother was very protective of her and actually seemed obsessed at the time with killing Joe. Ryan the incident happened when Joe was leaving a supervised visit with his daughter Kylie and the attack ended when an eyewitness showed up. So Alex, pled guilty to aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and ended up serving ninety days in jail, and this was in Austin Texas. But the custody battle between Joe and Laurie over tighly really got very dark at one point Laurie head to install cameras in the children's rooms and in the living room for the court to see what was going on in her house. But no abuse apparently was found from that camera footage but just so you know this was a really nasty custody situation. You're S, and then we have Joe Dying in April of two thousand, eighteen still young man. This was determined to be a heart attack they did not topsy, but then he his remains were cremated. This whole time has custody battle with over Retali- had continued to be ongoing, right? I. Believe he was fifty nine but he was pretty healthy and there were some strange things about his autopsy as well. Roy Yeah now the court documents say that Joe Ryan accused Laurie of parental alienation alleging that he had not seen his daughter for more than a year at one point. And he also referred to a court appointed psychologist who had interviewed Lori. And according to court paperwork the psychologist David, our pool

know your rights before you talk to the police
"The criminal justice. System. It's a pretty elegant thing crafted over centuries of refinement. You know some people don't even realize that our system of law and justice predates the birth of this country. By centuries. When settlers came to America, they brought English common law with them. And although there have been modifications and additions to that system, the basic structure remained. Things like precedent, which is the basic concept of relying on previously decided cases and using those established guidelines traditions. If, you've ever heard to lawyers argue they'll say things like Miranda, the Arizona. That's a reference to a prior already decided case that instructs the judge on how to rule on the case before the. It's up to the judge to weigh all the various arguments for a fair decision. And if there's clear precedent than the judge will usually rely on that previous ruling. Otherwise, he may decide to go the opposite way and in doing. So create new law and set a new precedent. That's often not the case and doing so could lead to an appeal and a reversal from a higher court. Anyway. This is starting to turn into a civics lesson, but it's funny just how many normal everyday citizens don't even know the basics of how our system of laws and justice works. It's really quite something. Even before the English, modernized in the seventeenth century, the roots of law date all the way back to Greek and Roman civilizations. In Ancient Greece if you killed somebody, their family had the right to kill you. At the end of the seventh century BC a man named Drako. The first legislator of Athens wrote a series of laws regarding intentional and unintentional homicide. The punishment for most of these cases was death. That's where the term draconian laws comes from. It refers to the overly harsh antiquated punishment for a crime. Thankfully since then we've made a lot of modifications to the law and our Constitution reflects the society that puts the rights of the individual before the needs of the state. For example. That case I mentioned a minute ago Maranda v Arizona. Well, that's the case where the concept of Miranda rights originated. We'll talk more about that later. But for now, all you need to know is that you should never talk to cops. They're not there to help you or be your friend. They're not looking out for your best interests when you're sitting in that hard cold chair of their eight by eight foot interrogation room. Oh. And before you start constructing your angry emails, I don't care if your husband or father best friend is a cop. I'm not saying all cops are bad. So calm your outrage. I'm giving you good solid life advice based on years of experience with cases like this. When you find yourself across from a COP whose? Questions about a crime. The only thing they're trying to do at that point is to get you to slip up so they can put you in jail. That is after all their job pudding criminals in jail. So, if you did something, don't talk to cops. If you didn't do something. Don't talk to cops just say it with me folks. Don't talk to cops. Ask for a lawyer at follow their advice. Or you may find yourself in the same predicament. That William hurt that. Jones statistically talking earlier. Wouldn't the information you'll and make sure we know who we're talking to. The holder family had been the talk of the town after a racially charged attack on one of the youngest sons as Venice junior watched the to unsupervised Kirk Oh kids. He saw an opportunity for retaliation he wanted. To beat them up like the other kids had done to his own brother but Roger wouldn't have it instead ten year old roger approached the girl with glasses and asked what she was doing with the Tadpoles. Kathy corrected him. She was catching salamanders. Roger enjoyed the girls spunk but his brother pulled him away he and Cathy waved goodbye hoping to see each other again. Ultimately however, the budding friendship was cut short when just four days later, the holder suddenly moved to California but Kathy wouldn't forget Roger Holder and their argument over Amphibians. In. The latter years of her childhood Kathy, watched her parents relationship completely deteriorate by the time she turned ten her father's musical ambitions had finally gotten the better of him. He ran off to Seattle in hopes of making it in the big city. This forced Cathy's mother Patricia to take over as the family breadwinner. Meanwhile, Kathy had no choice but to keep the household running and look after her three younger siblings before we continue with Kathy, psychology please note that I'm not a licenced psychiatrist or psychologist, but I have done a lot of research for the show. According to sociologist Monica Kirkpatrick Johnson when kids are forced to take on serious responsibility, they view themselves as older than they are. This is called subjective age and can lead adolescence to believe their maturity levels exceed those of their peers as Kathy's mom took on a full time secretarial job kathy nature her brothers were fed clothed and always ready to go to school on time in many ways, she became the second parent in the home. If, the child chooses to take on additional burdens that will likely manifest into positive characteristics down the line but negative effects may emerge when a child is forced into roles that demand them to perform as though they're older than they are Kathy may have appeared wise beyond her years but really she was merely mimicking adult behaviors. This type of pseudo maturity May. Increase. The likelihood of problems like substance abuse and increased sexual activity in adolescence for Awhile Kathy showed no signs of any behavioral issues she continued to care for her younger brothers as she always had an she applied that same level of dedication to her studies taking on many extracurriculars when she started high school among them were choir, Latin club track and community service. But by sixteen something changed with her brothers now, older county didn't feel so obligated to spend her time caring for them more than that acting like an adult for so long had taken its toll on Kathy, who still repressed the pain and anger from her parents separation. Unable to escape her resentment she rebelled she quit the track team dropped out of choir and stopped volunteering. Kathy dumped her boyfriend for a twenty something beach bomb every attempt her mom may discipline Cathy was met with verbal sparring. When eighteen year old Kathy graduated high school in June of Nineteen sixty-nine, her prospects looked bleak while others left with career goals and college plans Kathy kept dating and partying. So for the next two years, Kathy bounced from one random gig to another unable to hold anything down at first it was just laziness. Eventually, her indiscretions escalated while working at a drugstore she stole amphetamines for her friends when she was caught and subsequently fired it didn't seem to bother her in the slightest to make ends meet. Cathy resorted once more to theft.

"Because we like to do that we do so carries parents were Nancy and denny. And they fell in love with Nancy's just nineteen years old and then he was twenty one. They got married in nineteen seventy then in nineteen, seventy, two, their son Adam was born. Followed by Carey in nineteen seventy four. Nancy chose Adams name. So then he was to choose Carrie's name. Nancy wanted to name their daughter Kelly. Yes but after Kerry, well, yeah I guess Danny had seen this young girl singer on the Johnny Carson show I think it was really liked her thought she was talented and like the name Kerry. But then he changed the spelling to see a R. I Which I guess. Kind of. Plagued Carey in her youth because everyone was always misspelling her name. You gotta be careful with that. Right you do and this is before there were so many made up spellings like there are now me now you know that they're going to have special spellings of the kids names a lot of the time whatever whatever name you pick.
