Fed Cup to be renamed Billie Jean King Cup

"The Fed Cup has been renamed the Billie Jean King Cup and there's those big plan fair announcements about this week and it's a lovely lovely thing I think it feels so so right there is I think one caveat David that you pointed out on twitter which. Which I very much agree with. How How how much does it really? Well first of all, I agree with you I think I'm ready that it's been renamed. That's The. Caveat was the if we are renaming the Fed, cut the Billie Jean King Cup. It feels even further away that we're GONNA end up having the the great mixed team competition or Fit Slam slammers I'd love it to be. A combination of the Fed Cup or the Billie Jean King Cup in Davis. Cup, that I think the sports so. Hugely needs that feels further away. But maybe maybe that's maybe that's not the case. Maybe the fact that her name is on it and she is may be involved more. We'll bring that closer together because she so much wants that is well, she's. The biggest campaign for. Men and women working together and and being on the same page and being on the same bill for goodness sake. and. Hopefully. That will come in the future I mean. There are those events just don't exist this year. So this is the news news, the renaming, and and that alone really really about just one article Chris Clare in the New York Times right timing done an interview it but a Jianqing, I really enjoy a recommended he coach Bud Collins. Once. Saying that the Fed Cup is a splendid idea with a lame name and he quotes spitting Jean King saying. When a woman does something always think we do it for women when a guy does something, they never say they did it for the guys and so one of the changes I hope I can talk about more and more is that I would like people think that we. Are Doing it for the sport not for Women's Sports and I I thought. Absolutely right. It's It's about time attitudes changed. Yeah I thought that was. A perfect summation of both what Billie? Jean King is about an also how how this could be a a way forward for kind of mixed event and and a combination of men's and women's. Competition together but I mean personally that that that's not been my vision for mixed team event I've I've not thought that it should replace. Davis carpet. Now, village Inking Cup I genuinely think that it could go along alongside them. Both I don't think you need to. Get rid of them and combine it into one I. Think you could have a mixed team event like we had with the Hoffman Cup but make bigger thing out of that, and now we've got that point in the calendar with the ATP Cup and that I think that's the point. Many Times. Cup. Turn. So. Many cups when you did all the cups said back to back, it's Oh it's cup overload kind feels to be redundant to be talking about the of the moment you. Know. What the tent tennis Kinda is anymore but I mean personally I'm just saying I think there's room the space. It would be a great thing for a mix team competition to exist alongside. The Davis Cup in now Billie Jean King Cup that we already have our cup runneth over. A. Carrillo.

So maybe you can start by ten the listeners just a bit about you where you're located what you're up to right now and we can take it from there I like in in. Sorry in the UK. Head. Coach at sint George Hill Lawn. Tennis, Club it's a club that's one hundred, seven years old. So it's been there a long time. We've got about four thousand members pretty busy range of colts etc and doubles is pretty is pretty busy throughout the club. Okay. So four thousand members stats that's a lot of members a day. How many more active now so that membership split between different tasks gotTa Health and Fitness Section, we got obviously tennis and we've got a pool of we've got some squash as well about two thousand play play tennis including a genius Sir Pretty Busy sets up we've got the. And how many courts you have? We've got thirty three courts. The mixture of different surfaces indoors grass at different of official clay. So we've got a full range on ice and your head coach there. Yet on the head coach because the team of twelve coaches coaches right busy at the club especially now with people coming out of lockdown tennis being such a good thing to do with social distancing etcetera have to tennis numbers gone up since this time last year the participation has yet a court really busy from. Morning till night with lots of people working from home. And a sneaking out lunchtime for Gamete friends search it. It's pretty busy. And tell me you're also dope coach of too great. Exhibitions and clinics and things. It's it's nice to have them around. And here you having a good week this week they took a nice English scalp in the first round in Rome. Yeah. The did they played. At the top level, they're all playing people they've played before, which must make. It's so interesting. How, from how do you coach or head of players deal with known that the other guy knows all their secrets are patrons may be a better word yet it's good. Yeah. Lots of players play with with certain patterns in they do specific things at certain times. So it's it's know we speak regularly before the matches. Go through what the opponents, what we might expect them to do what they did against them last time if they did it against the lost time and it was successful low probably good again, if if they didn't work than the opponent will change it. So we've got to be prepared for things to change and it might change through the course match nobody plays exactly the same way all the time

"Everyone John Worth I'm here is this week sports illustrated tennis podcast were all catching our breath after the twenty twenty us open no one more. So than our first guest, why you ask it's dominant team, your men's winner he stopped by for what I thought was really quite an extraordinary conversation especially given the circumstances after that we speak with Dr Seon Bilac she's the president of Barnard here New York. She's also a cognitive scientists in a world expert on choking. So given the events of the week, we wanted to get her take. So it is a double, but I are champ from singles. Here's Dominic team. I didn't have time yet to reflect on on this incredible match on the on the win. The Dhamma. Grizzard champion off it's it's unreal to me still and also yesterday. We rent. Straits to the hotel after all the breast. Had some dinner together and then I didn't sleep on seconds so. Was not able to reflect but I guess that's coming the next day's. Going to say I, guess you pulled an all nighter as we say, how do you celebrate a major during lockdown? This is a new one. How do you celebrate when you can't exactly I would have been happening the? Honestly. We had pizza with my team Del Room, and then we were just jailing talking about. Reviews for weeks about the tournament and I think that I, wouldn't have done differently when. Everything was normal because I was shattered dean was as well, and the is coming in the our with a big hole. They wait till you get home. What affect. Do you think it had on? You not having fans there Stop for everybody I guess because fans of full stadium if she'll so much energy positive fantasy. You can rely on them. You can. You can rely on them, they will carry you. Through tough situations, carry us. Through when you feel leads and all these falls away. Of course, the teams April the Eugen for, but it's only three people so. Is was really tough to all the TIME INDIANA CI yourself. push yourself all the time. It's a unique situation and over even thought for the stadium full. In the moment, are you aware of of just how crazy crazy match the Zeus of are you aware of all these wild swings? I am yeah. Usually. I. I really remember. Most of the details in in every mansions. I four said sorted were kind of strange but then if said. I never experienced something before it was so weird such a big drama you will were ending up in the daybreak. With all the years we know shallow with the fringe share the Chinese broad a super long. Two Grand Slam finals, and then we badly all if said daybreak, it's just so crazy and. I guess to lock your. Normal to pressure before big matches. Did you know how intense the pressure was before you got out there? Did you know before you hit the first ball who you were really nervous? Noam usually are most times i. I find. The perfect mix between two nervous and the northern Norway, which is this area yesterday I just didn't find it I feeling really good at the warm up by. was hitting the ball very clean, very goods. Didn't have any pain was fooling fit and then I go out and suddenly I feel. So nervous arms are heavy lakes or heavy, I cannot really blame I. Real Dennis and the dental tough, and then all of this auden. Even I think was only off among soon to sits down. What are you telling yourself after that? I was telling myself. I was hoping that I free up at one point in then I was getting myself well is a major final. Fight for every point doesn't been get way worse than debts and. just hoping that also your opponent gives you something because he was playing very, very limited getting serving. Amazing playing solid from the bank and. then. Maybe he gave me a little bit. Maybe one full or some easy mistakes on the base on broken bank in his third and. Will moment where three. When it became. A good match.

US Open Day 14 - Thiem at last; Zverev devastated

"I'M ALMOST THERE CAN BE A. A third I've just called the name of mine wrong. What was it called ready What's his real name? I'm on my second bid David. Leads you've just opened third Tonia. Catherine. It's an Aq-. It's an Eq-. Right okay. So. Yeah. I'm drinking San Miguel apparently others call semi Guel. Not to worry about three of them. We've just watched the men's singles final. It is the sort of final that makes me feel like I've had about five days. Even if I haven't because it's. A meandering delirious. I don't really know how to sum it up. It was just but. Yeah I'm slightly worried that the match is just a big blur in my mind and I'm going to struggle to talk about what actually happened. I can remember very strongly the feeling of it happening and how I felt watching it. I think that will be etched into my mind forever because it was one of those matches by the end I was just so an egg tense for both players A. But trying to rationalize what happened might be quite a difficult task I think. Is a bit light last year's final when ref on the Dow lead two sets to love and a break. And that looked over and then suddenly it was in a fifth set is it bit lineup? No. I didn't think. It was follow quality I would say. I thought I thought. was really good like the whole time. This one was patchy. But the idea of it being not that interesting because looking like going to be a straight sets win. And then suddenly you don't want the match to end and you wanted to go on forever in that sense, it was similar. But I don't think quality-wise or. Sort of the reasons for why ended up being such a dramatic match were that similar tall I also think that Medvedev's comeback last year was completely unexpected I think again somebody like. Nidal or not somebody like against Nidal, if love down in your first Grand Slam final. Very few people are predicting away back I think even at sets breakdown today. People will. I think most people watching. Were waiting dominate team to wake up and. Waiting for something that felt like, surely, it has to happen surely at some stage today even if it's only. A small research and see and I am a break back pushing the set to a tiebreak. Winning a set. People were waiting to see the real. Dominic team. It felt. It felt like only a matter of time whether he could get it together. In time. Before it was either. But for me, that was quite crucial difference in how this one felt. Lost felt I will remember this match I think in the long run for the final set and for the final set tiebreak but. You can't have that without the other stuff that comes before just two guys. So, let's talk about that talk about the start of the match. And how we it was. It was weird. It was I mean festival Amazon deserve. Totally, different men to the guy who came out against public arena buster looked. Just, totally paralyzed with nerves and unable to play his normal game. He looked free now there for those first two sets, he looked languid he has. He has a languid power. Unlike, anybody else I think when you he said of generates speed of shot whether it's the serve of one hundred and seventy seven miles now or four hundred. That's kind of hit the back fence without you realizing he's actually hit it that hard. I don't think anybody else gives me that. kind of feeling out on the circuit of the moment you can. I can feel the power of everybody else is almost a slight of hand the way he does it, but he was timing the ball way way better and also the intent was there and he was coming into the net I mean the statistics on his net approaches. I think after a sense set in half to gone to the net twenty times. And with some success, he looks uncomfortable at the net, but he was just playing. The odd. So masters using his six foot six inches his wingspan. Great. Get into the net. And Dominic team was absolutely awful.

"Tomorrow's women's final at the US Open, will match a pair of two time Grand Slam champion's number four and Naomi Osaka. Against Victoria Azarenka, both of whom one in brilliant fashion last night, Osaka victorious and three sets over Jennifer Brady, both playing spectacularly throughout, while Azarenka lost the first set to Serena Williams 16. It came back to win the next 263 Serena so punished Azarenka in the first set, but I give Azarenka credit. She she found her own energy, and she completely flipped the match. And it was it was. It was really pretty stunning. And I think you know each one of these opportunities that slips by remember, Serena has not won a major since coming back after becoming a mother. Serena Williams upset by Victoria Azarenka at US Open

"So. Niamey's soccer took place in the final and that point. ENACT COVERAGE ON BBC radio we switched from our digital station sports, extra five, which is the network station and. We went big on Serena. Williams against Victoria as a Aranka. Which I have to say I started to think well, it can't possibly live up to what we've just seen in you just Kant. And the first point of the match. Serena. Williams on leashes a four hundred. The almost didn't. It couldn't be tracked by the the camera because it went so fast and it just went out but it felt like such a statement immediately, the I am going to just destroy every tennis bullet comes near me. And I felt like that my of slight rattled as a Aranka just the the shift force integration that was that was hit with. An immediately to breaks of serve to. Serena. Four games to love she led. Won The set six one. and. I don't know about you. But my name was it feels like we've just got an a time machine and back ten twelve years to when Williams was in twenty. It's the way she was running the movement. She was all she was moving right now soccer she's nearly thirty nine and she's hitting the living daylights out of the ball an and it really wobbled as Anka who started just Tara what did you think? Katherine Oh. Yeah it was blistering utterly blistering and I think it was a a mock of the respect that Serena Williams has. Victoria as rancor because her starts Serena have been Radi. Ready. Sluggish. And she's played some really good plays and she says improper tests but I think she needs she simply could not get away with that today. I think a mindset shifted completely. Am I don't know how I don't I genuinely don't know how you can just sort of decide i. I can't get away with doing that today. So I won't. Thing why you why couldn't you trick yourself over into thinking that every day but overseas? Just doesn't psychology doesn't work like that but. She. Yeah. She couldn't afford to give Victoria as. That lead and take her time to work her way into the match as she has been doing. and so she went to completely the other end of the spectrum and made. Pretty much as blistering start tennis match as I have seen as I've seen Serena making in recent memory, it was. It made my eyes Bogle out of my head. At moments. Really did it was like she? Convinced herself that Seraing was Sharapova. I mean how many times we've seen Serena come out with that intensity and that that or against Charipova and just make mincemeat of her certainly within the first set, and that's what she did to as their income in the first set she was. Unbelievably good as you said, crunching the ball moving fantastically and not allowing as incur any chance to set or what. So ever because she was serving well. So kind of dominating the points on her serve and then she was returning as in cassette could serve so strongly and. This was the Serena that I've kept expecting to see this tournament but i. I was beginning to doubt whether she had that level of tennis in her to be honest because I thought I thought we might see Sloan. Stevens I, thought we might see it against Zachary thought we might see against Perron Covi-, kept expecting. To raise her level in this tournament and. She was saving it for today it seemed and as you said I, don't know how you can turn that tap on and off and have control. Today I just. Will be extra. Mom is lengthy. It was like the very revealing candid. Enlightening. pre-match interview with Victoria as Aranka. where she was asked about her poor record against Serena in grand, slams, what do you need to do to get the win tonight? Play better. or or I? will she treated about for match interview with the contempt? It deserves it was. It was great.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic sensationally kicked out of US Open for hitting linesperson

"Is going to go down as probably I think he already is one of the best players to ever play the game. He's the number one player in the world. He was the overwhelming favorite to win the US Open. When it's all said and done, Novak Djokovic could have more majors than Roger Federer. You know, it's very possible, so he's a great player. But he's been known to have a temper on the court from time to time. Is he John McEnroe? No, of course not. But there was an incident A few months ago, We threw his racket and it almost hit a line stretch. Well, I want to play you a little bit of audio. Keep in mind. This is at the US Open from two days ago where Novak Djokovic was just broken Serve what It means is he just lost his game he was serving. It's not something you want to have happen to you when you're the number one player in the world, So he just this was literally seconds after he just misses a shot. He loses the point and he picks up a tennis ball, and he hits it. At a fairly good rate of speed, not trying to hurt anybody, but we'll get to that. But here's the live audio when it took place the side rail if it had a little if he had had a little higher would have gone right into the camera person. This one. He hits back and it's right towards the line person. And if it's all right, believe it hit her in the throat. Yeah, he's right. It did. So everybody was kind of shocked, right? It wasn't one of those situations where Oh, no. Look what happened. Everyone was trying to figure out what the hell just happened. Well, it turns out As the commentator just said that Novak Djokovic out of anger hit a tennis ball to the side rail. That's at least that's what he was trying to Dio. Instead, he connects head on. With a young female lineswoman. Right in the throat, So I don't know if she was young. She was 18 She maybe forties fifties sixties. I don't know. She falls to the ground holding her throat. It was a scary moment, but you know, you get hit in the throat. You never know what's going to happen anyway. It was really bad moments later. Termine officials get together and I knew what was going to happen because I know the rules of tennis. They disqualified him in the first set in the fourth round, the number one player in the world in a major the U. S Open now. Let me give you my opinions on this. First of all. When you decide to take out your anger, whether it's on your racket or tennis ball. You better while Dan make sure you don't hit anybody. Why? Well, first of all, I don't want to hurt anybody, and I don't think Djokovic was trying to hurt anybody. Clearly, this was unintentional. But it is your responsibility to know where you're hitting a tennis ball to know where you're throwing your racket and Novak Djokovic has been playing with fire for years. He's had incidents like this before where it was very close to hitting aligns person. There's a rule in tennis, and that rule is very simple. It doesn't matter whether it's intentional or not, if you make any sort of contact, and it's not in the middle of the point, for example, if you hit a shot in the middle of a point, and it hits the lines person, you're obviously not going to get penalized because you know that's a completely different. But if you throw a racket Or if you hit a tennis ball in anywhere, and it strikes anybody. You are immediately disqualified. This has happened before. That's exactly right. Thank you, Mr Mcclosky. It's happened several years ago with another player who's still in the open right now, if I recall It's a very simple rule. Don't do it, and if you're going to take your anger out on your racket or tennis ball, make sure you don't hit anybody. It's very simple. It's clearly in the rules, but I have a

"World number one and defending run champion Ash Party has released a statement to say she will not defend her French Open title and will not travel to Europe. A statement reads it has been a difficult decision to make, but unfortunately, I will not be competing. You're in Europe this year last year's French Open was the most special tournament of my career. So this is not a decision I have made lightly there are two reasons for my decision. The first is the health risks that still exist cove it. The second is my preparation which has not been idea with. Without my coach being to train with me due to the state border closures in Australia I wish the players and the French Federation all best for successful tournament, and now look forward to a long preseason and the summer in Australia. Novak Djokovic disqualified from US Open 2020

"Novak Djokovic James was disqualified from the US Open which is great for Dennis. Chef of all by the way, he was going to win we all know that but he's disqualified. Basically between points he's wandering. I guess kind of in the middle of the court and he kinda lobs the ball at the line judge the way you might if a ballboy was looking and you lob it at them, he probably hit a little harder but the line judge wasn't looking because you this just in you don't throw the tennis ball at the line. And she looked like she took it in the throat. And went down. She could not continue and because of that, he was disqualified from the US Open for that. You could see right away it was totally accidental. But what did you think of the whole thing should have been disqualified? Well if you read the rule. Right, if you're the which they've been showing for frigging every ten minutes for since it happened. Okay. It's it's pretty clear. What he did would would be would be breaking that rule. Okay it's kind of like. I don't have it in front of me but you may be able to pull up you may not, but it's kind of like. You know you're in charge of your own stick right in hockey, and if you're still goes up and you clip a guy in the forehead unintentionally, right? You're going to get penalized. Okay. And that rule is you have to be in control of your own stick whether it's accidental or not. If if you if you hit a guy, it's high sticking tie sticking and maybe more if you cut the. I think this rule in tennis reads the same way I didn't think it rose to the level of being kicked out. Did you. Know I didn't ask for a couple of reasons. One is he wasn't trying to do that. It's not as lined up here. He's got his sights and drilled the ball. At the line judge, make sure you understand here there's not a ballboy here he hit a line judge right Yup ballboy would probably be different right for the obvious reasons the ball boy would be ready there have to be ready at all times to. Give balls, and whereas the line judge might just be sort refocusing and you know they can take rest for a moment they may not be looking at the player. And it was a line drive. Okay, you came off his racket. Well it didn't bounce. It didn't bounce. He didn't lob it up in the Air Steve He. Say Line drive don't be confused. It was like one hundred miles an hour buddy. He's sort of pissed too. took the ball whacked it and it and it hit her on the fly in the throat. Wasn't intentional not at all. So when you see that, I'm like come on the guy, the guy didn't mean it. You know. So. That's you know that's a bit of a drag their. Okay. But back to the hockey roll like there's lots of penalties where you don't mean it. and it happens well, the broadcasters at the time they they actually had the they basically could hear a bit of the conversation. Between the officials and Jovic and one of the announcers said he believes that they had said part of the decision to have him disqualified was because the line judge could not continue right and. I honestly looked at that and maybe I I don't I don't want to be taken emails and an angry calls and things like that but it's a tennis ball. Am I look at the speed of that tennis ball? That's not exactly one where I'll be sending a card praying that she survives like that's that did not look like it hit particularly hard. That's just me eyeballing and give an opinion. But. We shall see. I agree she could've continued. If I had to you know I looked at her I I don't think he was faking I think she was surprised. But it looked. Real God her her her corner would come screaming but it looked a little over the top. Okay. Role Lawyers Up. Yeah. I don't know
