NASA's Juno Spacecraft At Jupiter Reveals New Info, Rocket Lab declares Electron launch failure

"Nastase Juno spacecraft is heading for its twenty eighth close encounter with the planet Jupiter later this month. As NPR's Joe PALCA reports, the probe continues to explore new feature is on the giant Gas Planet Juno arrived at Jupiter four years ago, it went into an elongated orbit, plunging fairly close to the planet's cloud tops for a few hours before swinging far out into space for weeks. Keeping the close encounters short is essential because of the harsh radiation environment close to the planet. Recently has been exploring an enormous storm that just appeared on Jupiter. An amateur astronomer here on earth was the first to spot the storm. The probe has also been making in-depth studies of the famous red spot, and even bigger storm Juneau's main mission is to map Jupiter's gravity field something that will take another year to complete Joe Palca and news. The private satellite launch firm rocket lab is trying to figure out what went wrong with the mission. Yesterday it's rocket successfully lifted off from New Zealand but was unable to reach orbit and lost its payload of seven small satellites rocket had planned to make monthly launches for the rest of the year, and into two thousand, twenty one

Reddit bans 'The Donald' and 'ChapoTrapHouse' as part of a major expansion of its rules

"So called so called free speech platforms are now banning All outlandish speech out. All outlines read. It is going to ban the Donald Red, which is one of the bigger threads on Reddit. It's It really is a huge threat on Reddit, and then just to make it fair. They're also banning Chapel Trap house, which is the socialist kind of mud grows over there. I mean, they really get in the mud that really gross and really ugly, but You know, they have a right to free speech to something they would never say about me. But Chapel Trap house has a right to basically say what they want, but apparently they're threat has been shut down. Two shut down 2000 communities after updating their content policy to more explicitly ban hate speech. Policy up taking three weeks after black lives matter. Protests led several popular rented forms go dark temporarily in protest of what they called the company's lacks policies around hosting and promoting racist content. So now Reddit has decided that they are going to continue to crack down on the ability of others to speak. I mean, read its CEO Steve Huffman said. Quote. I have to admit I've struggled about balancing my values as an American and around free speech and free expression with my values and the company's now he's around common human decency. So this is where the rubber meets the road. Here's the reality. There is an Overton window, right? These corporations are not the government and they are allowed to have certain limits as to what they will allow. But if your belief in common decency is basically you just agree with the policy preferences of left. Of common decency means you agree with the left. And that is what is coming into conflict with free speech and free expression and free speech and free expression are no longer existence

Reddit banned a pro-Trump subreddit. Here's what you need to know.

"Has not been a good week for President Trump on Social media On Monday, the live streaming platforms twitch suspended the president's account for posting what it labeled hateful content. It's not clear how long that suspension will Last. Also one Monday, the discussion website Reddit announced it was banning its largest community devoted to President Trump. That community is called the Donald and read. It said it had consistently broken the company's rules against hate speech and inciting violence. This comes a year after Reddit put a warning on the Donald to caution that it was out of line with the platforms policies. Back. Then we spoke with Robert Peck about this. He's a lecture and rhetoric at the University of Iowa and he volunteers as a moderator for Reddit. Robert Peck joins us again. Welcome back. Thank you for having me. Robert for our listeners who don't spend time on Reddit or aren't familiar with this particular Subreddit called the Donald Would you describe? What is it? What type of group discussion happens there and how wide is its reach? Of course, read it is a little bit. Unlike other big social media sites, things like Facebook and Twitter. Those sites often are based around an individual person's profile. On Reddit. Conversely, most people follow topics rather than individual people and read it calls those pages dedicated to those topics. Subreddit CE. The Trump Subreddit, which is called the Donald is dedicated, ostensibly to President Trump and his doings and at the time of its recent ban. It had just under 600,000 current subscribers, though at its peak usage, which was within the last couple of years. It had 3/4 of a 1,000,000. The sub Reddit has become somewhat infamous. In fact, I would go so far as to call. It may be the most infamous page that has ever existed on Reddit. Over the course of the last few years, it has been home to Russian propaganda efforts that were caught both by volunteers on the side and by red. It's on staff. Have been several incidents of the appearance of hate, speech and hateful mean was on the page that were then taken up by Trump himself and spread by his own campaign workers and by the president's own Twitter account. It's become somewhat unpleasant place as you can probably imagine, And that led into thes recent actions that Reddit has taken against it. We mentioned that this Reddit community had gotten ugly enough that it had been disciplined before. But what changed that caused it to be outright band? I don't know that anything in particular changed about the way the page itself was being used. Most of the actual activity that led to this ban has been unfolding over some years. I think what changed to lead to the ban is reddit itself, and I think that it changed in response to recent happenings in the United States. Things like the Black lives matter, protests that have been unfolding over the last few months. In response to those things. Reddit has made several changes, and one of those changes is adding significantly to its rules about hate speech and discrimination on the site, And it seems to be in response to those changes that Reddit has also decided at last to act against the Donald in a final way by banning the page out, right. Does this put peer pressure on other social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to crackdown more aggressively than they are on their own sites. I think it May well do so. The question in my mind is that how similar red it is to those sites sites like Twitter we know Twitter has been taking actions to expose the president's hate speech Recently, It's been doing things like flagging his tweets as rule breaking and trying to correct information that it finds there without outright removing those posts itself. Not. Reddit has banned this group of supporters of the president. That's not quite the same to me is actually limiting the president's own ability to use social media. This is nonetheless an enormous action for Reddit to take whether other sites will follow or not. I can't say they might feel they have other circumstances, but read at least has been willing to take just about the most significant step it it could against this group. Robert, from your perspective as a reddit moderator, could the moderators of the Donald Have done something to try to prevent it from being banned. Oh, APS, absolutely they could, and it's it's In addition to my perspective as a moderator, it's also something that the site's owner has made known both to the volunteers who ran that section of the site and to the users of the site. More broadly, the sights owners who are called the administrators of the site frequently reached out to the Donald's moderators told them what was going wrong in their eyes on this sub reddit and ask them, please to me. Changes in the way they were enforcing the rules, both of their own page and of the site as a whole. But that's something the moderators of the Donald obviously weren't willing to do, and as a result, their community's been banned. So for the time being at least people who used to share thoughts on the site no longer have that outlet. But that doesn't mean they can't go somewhere else. Is this a chance for lesser known site to gain that traffic? It certainly is, we know fairly confidently that this kind of thing from users of the Donald is unlikely to take off on reddit anymore. However, the Donald's moderators have already tried to create an alternative platform they've created. A website called The Donald Got Wind that they've had for months already been redirecting users of their subreddit over to use The best estimates I confined suggests that that page is fairly active, and that use may spread that way. But limiting this activity on a big social media site is certainly a step in the right direction, even if it does spread to Ah, privately owned website with less resources and less exposure than read it itself. That's Robert Peck. He's a volunteer moderator for Reddit and a lecture in rhetoric at the University of Iowa. Thanks for talking with us. Thanks for having me.

YouTube TV vs. Sling TV: Which Streaming Service Is Better?

"I've been subscribing a YouTube TV about a year as a cable alternative that cost less than cable, TV and offers a way better experience, but youtube just announced a huge thirty percent price hike for the service, and I'm rather upset about it. As are many others as have been noted on social media, I'm Jefferson Graham let me fill you in on. Today's talking tech now. When it launched in twenty seventeen YouTube TV thirty five dollars a month, and gave you a host of cable channels more than enough as far as I was concerned, but way fewer the hundreds on cable. You know the ones we never watch. You didn't have to rent. Stupid. Cable boxes or DVR's everything was streaming, and that cloud dvr offered unlimited storage, not only that you could start a show on TV and watch the rest on your phone or tablet without missing a beat. But then youtube started adding more channels in upping the fee. Before the latest price hike, it'd ballooned up to fifty dollars monthly. Beginning July thirtieth for current subscribers, the TAB is now a whopping sixty five bucks. Youtube tried to soften the blow by announcing new channels like MTV and comedy central, but that does nothing for me. How about an option to stay at fifty dollars? Sands MTV because I don't want my MTV and like Trevor Noah, but I can live without comedy central to so as I mentioned. I'm rather upset. As, my friend Peter Chatty noted on twitter. All of the sudden Youtube TV is sounding an awful lot cable, which is why we got YouTube TV in the first place. So what are we going to do well? The cheapest option is to switch to sling TV which just announced that. If you sign up by August I, it will freeze pricing the thirty dollars monthly for twelve months good. But slaying doesn't have as many channels for instance no CBS or NBC local, so if you like to dvr shows on those networks, you'll have the spring for an external dvr. It's a lot of work. The Air TV model that sling sells for a hundred dollars requires an external, hard drive Ka Ching add another hundred dollars, or so, who live TV is fifty five dollars, but I don't believe for a minute that the rates are not going up soon. So I started shopping cable TV again I did some Internet searches and played around with the comcast and spectrum websites, which reminded me why left cable in the first place the come on raids started around sixty bucks in once you added in the equipment rental for Modem, TV boxes and DVR's plus all those fees, and you're now north of one hundred twenty five dollars so now youtube. TV doesn't seem so bad. I'm still furious. Google and I don't understand why the company can't cut slight viewers like me slack and offer them package with fewer channels. But. You know what I'm not going back to cable.

EVO 2020 was cancelled

"Yvo Twenty twenty has been canceled due to various sexual abuse allegations. Yvo Is the biggest annual fighting game tournament in the world, and even with the covid nineteen issues plaguing everyone on the planet. The tournament was soldiering on with plans to make it fully online. Earlier this week, however that all fell apart, and in order to learn more about it, I called on Imran Khan to explain everything Imron. Come into the gaming ride home show again for having me Yvo was canceled. And I just want you to give me the full story. What happened? Why was it canceled? Everything start from the beginning, so ego is the biggest fighting tournament in America Kinda the biggest in the world. There's like some discussion about that at this point, but ego is basically where fighting games have been aspiring to for the last twenty thirty years and listening started in the ninety S. This year, obviously because of covid kit have their usual Mandalay Bay Las Vegas big gathering of fighting game players. So this year they ended up canceling I place. Eve Online Eve online was a different thing where the. Mainly, got games together with like Netco like mortal Kombat eleven and them fighting her indie game that was originally based on my little pony, but basically it was A. It has to evolve brand that could stay around despite not being the big mass gathering tournament that they expect over the last couple of weeks. There's been a bigger. industry-wide movement to out sexual predators in gaming and the gaming industry, and some companies have been hit harder than that are with that bubis off for example, but for the most part it's. It's not a huge thing within the FTC. Because the FTC's always kind of had a reputation of like. Being a bit more open with their sexual harassment and it's always like. It's never been to a level of. A mass critical mass. Joey quilter this past week yesterday in for yesterday in fact was outed by a player. Named He's just does mikey. He goes online and is after the tag is crack. Peron but George Taylor. Who is the head of the current? President Vivo who founded it with Tommy Tony Kanaan. was outed for experiences when he was. Close, to twenty, where they were southern golf land, which is an amusement park in l. a.. That mikey accused him of basically. Paying money to young kids to take their shirts. Germany polls mikey related experience where he said quarter. Paid him twenty dollars to see his genitals inside a restroom and bought him pornography so. It's IT'S A. It's a larger thing that when you look at it from the perspective of not a child who just thinks they're having fun. It's real creepy, but what is conditions came out. Other people's Front, also coming out of the woodwork, saying like more finding old chaser people were talking about doing these things, but not naming names, and now that it's out. The floodgates are broken out. Yvonne immediately went. No, WE'RE GONNA put on administrative leave and check this out, so I mentioned Tom. Tony Kennedy before their more famous like they are obviously co-founders of ego, but there are more famous right now for being developers of Product L. at riot games so. They had to step in for this and go okay. We're looking at this right now. We're investigating and seeing what happens. It did not take very long before nether realm. I believe the first one like say. Are Involved with ego involvement in that sense means we don't WanNA game there. We're not going to earn any money towards prize pools. We're not doing any advertising which is fairly big deal. Arguably moral combat was like the lead game for that tournament. Right for the online tournament. Yes, Merle come at usually has a hard time with like the in person tournament. Fighting community hasn't really take to that game too well, but as an online net code game like for example, smash brothers was canceled for Eve online because the net code. Isn't that good, so this is more time to shine. The actual like really arguably was streetfighter as it is every year. This year. Are Not meeting her, but a little bit. After another canceled COP CANCELED IN ONCE CAPCOM cancels gets away from ego. Then that's that's the ballgame lets. Everything goes away soon after main sex developers of them biting heard who this is their big chance to become A. Kind of a household name and if I didn't need community, they cancelled. Bay Namco canceled and ran into that ego are the canons came out with a message from as ego saying? Hey, we were cutting for joy color. He is not president anymore. In the future, he will have zero involvement with the organization this not he's going to not be on. He's going to be on the board, or he'll be the FCC or he'll still kind of tournaments. They're cutting it off completely. Shortly after that they also that announced, we can't under these circumstances and this change in organization also do evil online in a couple of weeks in August. A month or in August? I. Know that screws over a lot of people, but. It seems like honestly the best. Call right now of. You'RE GONNA have to go through with work. That joy has done or you're going to have to. Try It's from scratch. Cobble together in event that takes at least a year to actually set up and try to get together in a couple of weeks. Yeah, I mean they just they basically. Got Rid of the boss in the most public way, possible right I mean it's it's you can't just like recover from that in a matter of weeks. Really Yeah, it's. It is one of those things of a lot of this is. Probably high time for the funding community insert reckoning with a lot of these things, because it's an issue for a number of years, it was I. I don't know if you recall but a about eight years ago, there was a street fight across capcom across Tekken. Show online, and it ended up ending as a result of some sexual harassment claims, and those a big divide in the community about like whether sexual harassment was a just a part of the culture or not and. Stuff like this doesn't help that argument. No I mean I like you, said earlier I mean like. Feels like the right call to elevate it, and as disappointing as it is for Yvo to be cancelled like it's a big flag for like we need to address. This is if we're going to cancel this event because we need to look at ourselves internally and I think I. Mean Hope the hope is that they come out better on the other side. I mean it seems like this is one of those things where. I. Hesitate to say Covid kind of save them but. If. This were an actual in person things still at Mandalay Bay then they wouldn't be able to cancer that quickly an online tournament. Shuttered a lot more easily. The bigger question now is what happens next year.

The technology behind the discovery of a new blue hue

"The It is feeling an open sky and ocean and chemistry today geeking out about the color blue. From American public media. This is marketplace tech I'm Ali would. So it turns out. It's very rare to discover new color pigments, an oregon chemist, a major breakthrough in the science of color. A decade ago, he discovered the I knew blue pigments in more than two hundred years, and just about a month ago, that pigment was cleared for use in commercial products that as it happens, are actually more energy efficient as paint and surface colorings, and now that same chemist is pushing color science forward again. Oregon public broadcasting just burns reports. Matsu Superman is a scientist versed in serendipity. The happy chance occurrence the lottery of the amazing, many of the importance, scientific discoveries come by accident. Clearly a pot of boiling science serendipity was in play a decade ago when his Oregon State University lab discovered the new pigment which would be named union men blue. He was looking for new materials to use an electronics, but what came out of the furnace was something else entirely I couldn't believe it. I was shocked because the samples Gimmel, so blue paints made with Yin and blue or highly heat reflective in the formula has been licensed for use. Since that Discovery Mayan has focused on the chemistry of color. He and Brett dual who just got his PhD started experimenting with a mineral called Hip night, which is mostly found in meteorites, and they tried adding a little bit of cobalt to make another blue pigment. We didn't expect it to be as intense as it was. The formula for cobalt blue made without hip night was discovered about two hundred years ago, but paint made with the pigment comes with health warnings because it can be toxic, this new color could be less toxic because it uses a fraction of the cobalt. Cobalt was so low. Giving off the same color essentially. It was a little surprised moment followed by an a Ha moment like an hour or so later dual says materials are also cheaper by a six, but it's still too early to know. NASA worked with industry partners to develop the spring tire, an airless tire made of several hundred coiled steel wires woven into a flexible mash. When the Mars Curiosity rover experienced significant wheel damage, engineers thought spring tires might be a better solution, but the steel tires deformed as well. A moment of serendipity helped researchers spring into action. Here's Colin. Krieger a mechanical engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center. We have integrated a very unique material shape memory alloy, which are center is one of the world's leading experts then shape memory alloy as specific class of metals that can undergo a fully reversible solid to solid phase transformation. So you think of like water can go from a liquid. Liquid to solid and back and forth as essentially what this material does and with Spring tires made from this nickel titanium alloy NASA engineers are reinventing wheels that could roll across the moon and

He starred in a music video and even got offers to be on TV that Ah, licking a musical gave a small town in hands like me used to have to move to the big city to get noticed, he says. Tic Tac lets us do that from home. Up to 1/3 of TIC Tac users are believed to be in India. They're the biggest group outside China. Some Indians have even monetized it selling English lessons on tick talk, for example. But this week, the Indian government banned Tic Tac, along with 58 other Chinese made APS amid tensions with Beijing. We the people of India, standing behind the government have the ability to hit China where it hurts. India's nationalist TV anchors applauded the move. Many Indians are outraged over China's killing last month of Indian troops. Some are calling for a boycott of all Chinese goods. The government is trying to tap into the national sentiment in sweeping India right now. Akil Berry with the think tank Eurasia Group, says the Indian government is concerned about data privacy on Chinese APS. It also wants Indians to develop Indian APS rather than using Chinese ones. But India's own tech start ups get a lot of Chinese investment, Barry says. When you take a look at India's unicorns startups that a valued at over $1 billion about 18 off the 30 of them have Chinese investment. So if Beijing retaliates and pulls Chinese investment That could hurt India even more, he says. Tic Tac says it's following Indian privacy laws and is asking the Indian government to reconsider. Meanwhile, in a small town in northern India, housewife Anita Meena has been posting videos to tic tac of herself doing folk dances and have gone viral. She gets recognized when she goes to her local market, she says. Tick. Tuck is banned. Mina says she'll focus on YouTube Instead, it's unclear how many of India's roughly 200 million TIC tac users will do the same if Lauren Frayer NPR
