What's the best mic for podcasting?
"To, kick off his answer to the Cuny Wednesday question. What is the best Mike for podcasting? WanNa start by saying that I've done a ton of research on this topic. I've done a incredible amount of experimentation We've recorded over sixteen hundred episodes of this podcast and every single time record an episode. We try so many different things to improve the quality of the audio of the sound of the edit to continually be professional and compete with professional podcasts. So I'm not going to geek out on giving you all these different types of microphones you can buy on. Ana, give you the summation of what I've learned over the years. Will you really need to know what I would tell somebody if they're getting started with a podcast? Actually going to start somewhere completely different somewhere. The whole thing to do with microphones because you can have a state of the art microphone that costs five hundred dollars plus but it will do you. No. Good. If you're space is awful if we're you record is not a good space as conducive to recording, it doesn't matter what you're going to use to record for example, very court my podcast with a great quality Mike but There's construction going on there's noises dog barking I'm in a room with high. Ceilings and no installation that record is going to sound straight trash. Okay. It doesn't matter that you have a great Mike because your environment is horrible. Good news is that you can easily manager environment and make sure that wherever you record, it's actually conducive to agree recording. So one of the things I highly recommend is your cord either in a walk in closet or closet, the has shelving the bare minimum have your mic on a shelf in a closet and you record into that shelving into the closet. Because your voice is being projected towards the mayank into the closet, and because the shelving is kind of. Confined like into a box, your voice is not going to be bouncing around a lot across the room. It's going to be confined to the closet. This is sort of creating a makeshift soundproofing or sound booth. This is going sound a whole lot better than you just having your Mike at your desk in a big room. The next level up is to actually record in a sound proofing box. This is an actual Foam box has soundproofing that you place your mic inside. And you place that box into a closet or a shelf, and this really makes everything sound like studio quality. It's incredible and your listeners just using a portable soundproof box that you can buy Amazon it's about two hundred dollars, but it's actually worth more than the actual Mike it's actually going to improve the quality of your audio more than the actual. Mike. Itself I actually. Just. Looked it up on Amazon and the one I was thinking of a travel on, which is two hundred dollars. There's actually an alternative one that is in portable, but it's only thirty six bucks. It's called the choice studio sound recording, vocal booth thirty, six dollars. It's basically a box me out of foam where you can place your mic inside and talk right into it. That is going to make a tremendous difference. Now, let's talk about Mike's There are whole much of mine because I can go through but I'm GonNa give you two mikes. One that I would say is absolutely amazing for the price and you can actually use for all your podcasting with that soundproofing for as long as you like, and the second one is going to be if you insist on buying something expensive, this is the one I recommend. So the first one is the Audio Technica eighteen or twenty, one, hundred, it retails for about one hundred bucks on Amazon it's a be an xl are Mike, which is great. That means if it's used. To your computer and record using your recording software right on your computer or they're using quicktime or Daswani, or garage band or whatever using record your audio. Now I mentioned ex- LAR-. It also does acceler excellent actual cable that needs to go into a sound or quarter like a Zumra quarter if you don't own talking about then this is kind of technical and you may want to Google that but if you're interested in recording on your Laptop than you have to get a Mike, this be compatible which is this one, the audio tape, a tr twenty, one, hundred. This is why I think is one of the best Mike's you can buy period for podcasting for a webinars for calls. It's fantastic. It's really really an amazing quality Mike. It's on intellectual mish means that when you speak into the mic picks up your voice and it does its best of not picking up. Anything that's around in the room. So even if somebody's shouting across the hallway, if you're in a different room, it won't pick up
What are the benefits of podcast seasons?
"This week's question comes from Ethan. Hi, I'm them one of the hosts from the young perspective podcast and my question is, what is the point of using seasons, my podcasts, and if they're really beneficial at all, thank you. Thanks for your question. He said now podcasting in seasons can make things a lot more manageable. It can relieve that pressure of constantly having to release new episode and to find time to grow your audience. Now that being said, there are some downsides to it. So let's take a look at what they are and whether podcasting seasons is the right move for you. Before we talk about the benefits and drawbacks of podcasting in seasons, let's talk about what it even is. Think of a podcast season like a television series where with the number of episodes you're telling a sustained story or talking about or exploring a theme. So types of podcasts at do really well with seasons are things like audio dramas where they have a story arc or narrative or Evergreen topics where you can explore a topic at length. Now, the number of episodes doesn't really matter as long as you are declaring, it's a podcast season and you're taking breaks like much you would with a television series. Benefit number one is that it's actually easier to produce because you're doing upfront work in planning your stories or interviews so that you have everything mapped out by the time you hit record unit exactly. What you need to do benefit number two is a gives you a break so that you can work on improving your show. Now I don't know about you but having to consistently produce an episode marketing engaging your audience all those things I know it's super overwhelming. So having that break in between seasons gives you an opportunity to do things like engage more with your audience on social media, getting listener surveys and looking at the feedback for that or even looking at some of your download data. So that he can help, you do things moving forward such as finding better ways to market your podcast or even looking at topics your audience members will really love benefit number three is it gives your listeners a chance to digest all of the information. So let's have a really meaty topic that you want to cover in your podcast season. It gives you a chance to cram in a lot more things because you don't have to assume that each episode your listeners don't really know background information or any statistics you may have covered in a previous episode. So you can build up your episodes in a sequential fashion with each one where you're assuming the list already knows something from the episode before. Here are some reasons why you might not want to podcast in seasons. So reason number one is that it can take more time to create content. Yes. Cream the upfront work and help you be more consistent but that up front work can take a lot of time. If you think about it, you have to map out an entire season. How ever many episodes that is so you got to figure out what you WANNA do from start to finish you. Have to write the scripts lineup all your interviews make sure all these things are ready, which can take a lot more time than if you were producing something like a weekly show number two is that it can be harder to grow and audience. Especially, if you're show is new if you think about it, listeners crave consistency. So doing something like producing a weekly podcast listeners know exactly when episodes drop and what they can expect now when you're podcasting and seasons. The. Actual season. Yes. You are consistently dropping episodes but between episodes if you're not around lizards might forget about you and move on to other shows. Now, one way to combat that is to make sure you're still communicating with your audience members that could be keeping active on social media, a camin still writing email newsletters consistently, or you can do something like drop bonus episodes so that people know you're still producing content and they can anticipate a new season. With the benefits and the drawbacks of podcasting seasons. The point here is just to do podcasting on your own terms, figure out what it is that works best for you and feel really good about that decision and just do it. Thanks for sending US your question Ethan.

How the Apple Podcasts Analytics help you understand your audience
"Welcome to podcasting where you learned the best tips and strategies to launch growing monetize your show. This week's question comes from Dan is Dan sky pilot faith quest podcast, and I have some questions about the apple podcast analytics. I love the buzz sprout analytics, use them all the time and find them very helpful. And I go to the apple podcast analytics and I find them really confusing. Sometimes, there's information about a particular podcast that is lacking on the screen. It seems inconsistent within its own podcast analytics as well as compared to what you all offer. Tell me what I should be looking out there. Should I even be using them? Is they're helpful information there. What are your recommendations thank you so much for your question. Dan So apple podcasts analytics offers some. Additional data points that they don't necessarily share with podcast hosting sites such as but sprout, and while having more information is usually really good thing. You kinda need to know what you're looking for and what you're looking at when you're an apple podcasts connect. So on this episode, we're GonNa, tell you in explain a little bit about why the data points might look a little bit different and then how to get the most out of apple podcast analytics. Let's talk about why you might see some download discrepancy between your hosting site and apple podcasts connect. So with a hosting site, they're going to show you across the board. How many listens in episode is getting Apple podcasts is not set up that way apple podcast connect is going to only show you information from listeners that meet specific set of criteria. The first is that the listener has to be using the most current version of the apple. PODCASTS at the second is that user also has given permission for their diagnostic information in their usage data to be on top of that, there is a seventy two hour lag time. So if someone listened to an episode that you posted on Monday, you're not gonna see that reflected in your stats until Thursday on top of that, if you get less than five people that meet that criteria, apple is going to register zero data for that episode so. The key here is if you want to find out information about how many listens and episodes getting, you're going to want to check in with your hosting site like bus browse going to show you how many listens to you over the course of all time as well as where maybe your audience listening from. You're not gonNA, get an accurate reflection of your download information from podcast connect. What is it good for? Actually there are three really good data points that podcast connect can offer you. The first is average consumption by episode when you land on the dashboard for your podcast scroll down until you see recent episodes, once you're there look at the stat in the far right column. The percentage you see here is the average amount of time your audience listening to each episode. For example, if you have a twenty minute episode with a seventy, five percent average consumption rating that means that people are listening to about the first fifteen minutes of that episode. For the next data point, you can see in podcasts connect episode listen duration click through to one of your episodes to see a graph showing you the percentage of listeners that are still tuned in at any point in your episode. If you're doing everything right, you should see a gradual taper from the beginning to the end of the episode. If you see a sharp drop in listeners, click on the portion of the episode and listen to it to figure out why so many listeners bailed at the same time. For example, there was an episode entitled finding the Best Podcasting. Microphone we noticed that people stopped listening around. The, nineteen minute mark when we went back and looked at that, we noticed that that was where we kind identified that podcasting microphone, and so people didn't really have a reason to keep listening. So what you WanNa do is really think about why people would drop off really explore that if that's that you've given them an answer and they don't need to listen anymore if it's more of a click bait kind title if you had an ad run in the middle reverse engineer, why everyone might disconnected at that point so that you can create more content that has people stay on for the duration of the episode. The last thing that you can learn from podcast connect is how many new listeners subscribed after listening to a particular episode blow the Listener Duration Graph for each episode, you'll see a role of additional statistics on the far right. You'll notice a percentage called devices, subscribed devices subscribed as the percentage of unique devices that subscribed and listening to the episode. For example, if you have an episode that has a twenty percent subscribe rate versus an episode that has a ninety percent subscribed rate, you're GonNa WanNa look at what you did to get ninety percent subscription because if you can do more of that, it will result in more podcast listeners. It's GonNa help you grow your podcast tremendously.
National Bald is Beautiful Day with Jon Gay
"Paul John Gay Aka Jag here wishing you a very happy bald is beautiful day. He is short weekly episodes and then mixes in longer form interviews with industry people. In this episode, he interviews Rob Greenlee of the newly formed podcast academy. They talk about the industry and then give details about the academy which a lot of us are curious about. In fact, this episode reminded me to join the academy as soon as I finish recording. OOPS! I Screwed Up!
"It's a big podcast David Hooper here. In when I was a kid maybe fifth or sixth. Grade. Junior high. I was doing something stupid. And I got caught by a teacher wasn't just any teacher it was the principal of the school. talked my way out of it. The next day I was bragging some friends about what a smooth talker I was and what an idiot the principal was. I was in art class and we these huge tables. Maybe I don't know three or four kids at a table. And when she picks you this. The Art. Room, it was in a house. That was next to the school. My school was in urban neighborhood and I guess there was a house next to it or something they bought it run out of room. Made it offices and made it the art room. So anyway, I'm in the House for art school, but it's on the third floor. It's in the attic 'cause they did all their business downstairs it all up stairs, and you had to go up several flights of stairs. Very narrow. This was before. Ada. It wasn't easy to get to you, but it's kind of cool for a kid because you felt you were safe kind of hanging out and I got my friends they're around the Big Table and I kept going on and on that. Then, I turned around and she was right behind me at the top of the stairs you come out of nowhere because that's other thing worked imagine going into your attic and you're right there anyway a turnaround she's right there. And I taught my way out of that sort of. Not Really Fast to a couple of days ago. I got this episode of building podcasts with Dave Jackson that are released and always download my own episodes I. Subscribe to my own podcast because I want to make sure the feed is working sometimes I listen sometimes I don't happen to listen to this one and I'm hearing sloppy edits. Thought to myself that's Weird I. Guess I decided to keep things loose. Talk and things like filler words. Apart when I asked David question wasn't clear on it or stumbled or something. I asked him the question again normally, I would add those things out and thinking to myself man sloppy edits then interview ins and Dave and I keep talking and that was my ocean moment. I knew at that point this is the raw tape. I think what had happened is I was in the middle of netted got distracted by something else. I should have gone back to it. I didn't. It seems like an easy thing to remember. But because this was a three part episode, it's got confused in way back to the tape I'm listening to. The interview ends. Dave. Keep talking and I think to myself I. Hope. I. Didn't say anything bad. And I didn't. Just. A word that I'd normally be out I said. And then Dave said. And also said mother And then I said. And then I said I think. Is a mother. and. I'm kidding but I did say which on this podcast should have been beeped. Because this podcast is classy like that. Lesson number one from this episode. Assume all Mike's are hot. The message is being broadcast and everything you say is on tape. But there was a second mistake that I made in that episode to completely screw up the sequence of things. You probably heard something that I call the double intro. This is pretty common. Where somebody does an interview? And introduced the guest. Hey, we got Joe Schmo from Blah Blah Blah dot com. He's a good friend of mine and today we're GonNa talk about Blah Blah Blah, welcome Joe, you got that introduction. But before that, you got the basic intro to the podcast where somebody will come in and they'll say something like, Hey, I'm David Hooper and this is the Joe Schmo Blah Blah Blah podcast. Today we're actually interviewing Joe Schmo he's the king of Blah Blah Blah and JOE SCHMO DOT com. Here's the interview you. You're a sound effect and then it goes to that previous recording that I just mentioned hey, it's David. So you repeat the same thing that's the double intro, and it happens usually because people are doing things at a different time. That is exactly what happened with the Dave Jackson episode. Not only was I doing something at a different time. It caused me to lose track of where I was in the editing process because this was a three part episode I had an introduction episode I had the Dave Jackson part of the episode and I had the Larry Roberts part of the episode things got really screwed up for this three part series a record, the Larry I then I did the one with Dave and then I did the intro episode but how release things how you heard them With, you heard the intro episode. You heard the Dave episode. Then you heard the Larry episode. So instead of one, two, three, it was three to one and that's not a huge deal except that I mentioned something on the Dave episode. which you hadn't heard yet I talked about what had already happened on the Larry episode that hadn't been released yet. Another one of those things it's not a huge deal, but it's worth talking about because when something like that happens, it breaks up the fantasy. That the podcast or radio show whatever you're making is a well oiled machine. It's like you hearing question being repeated again. When you edit that out, it makes the Ho- seems so much smoother. You like man that Guy's great on the Mike he knows exactly what to ask. Not In real life. If you heard the mistake that caricature that you think is real that's blown. As lesson number two here. Sequencing is important.

Interview with Rough Translation host Gregory Warner
"Hi and welcome to the PODCAST Brench Club podcast. My name is Adela and I'm the founder of PBC today. I'm so happy to be joined by Gregory Warner host of NPR's report translation a podcast about the things that we're talking about in the United States are being talked about in some other parts of the World Hi Gregory thank you so much for joining us today. So rough translation is a favourite among many podcast ranch club listeners, and we've actually included episode in a listening less. We did last year called looking for love but for those who aren't familiar with their show, can you just give us a little bit of an overview? Sure sure. We'll. Our tagline is. Stories from far of places that hit close to home. Our original tagline and season one folks have listened back that far was things we're talking about how they're being talked about in other places but both those ideas are. Sort of around the the idea of we're going to tell stories that. Take place in some other. Maybe, some other countries, some other culture that's but but it's GonNa feel close to home. It's GonNa. It's GonNa hit you in some way it's it's not that we're specifically telling non-american stories or it's them and us but just we're gonNA take you places but it's going to feel that it's GonNa hit you personally got it. Yeah. It feels familiar but it's a from like maybe a different perspective. Yeah. So I'm curious about your background and how the idea for the show came about. Sure. So well, let's see so. Terms of my radio background. So I went to Salt Salt Institute for Documentary. Studies that was my. First taste of radio I worked in some local worked at a local station called North country public radio. Up in very northern New York and then after that, I went to Afghanistan So which was not as much of a leap as you think because I went from one very rural area to another very rural area and the stories of actually quite similar in terms of the story of the economy as well as the story of. Loneliness and and and all that. So I spent I ended up spending about two years on and off in Afghanistan. Let's see that was from. Two thousand. Six to two thousand eight. And then I left for a number of reasons. But also because that period two dozen sixty, thousand eight was was you could do a lot of reporting then. That that you just couldn't that was a lot harder to do after two, thousand, eight kidnappings it started in a massive way and then I was based after that in in Rwanda, and also some in Kenya, an eastern Congo. So we spent some time in in Africa again as freelancer and then came back to the US started working for marketplace as a staff reporter kind of learned. Later the art of grabbing tape and making a same day story, which is when I ended up getting the job at NPR's the international correspondent in in Nairobi. Sort of it is a you have to use fast twitch muscles but. What's Nice about that job is that there was also a lot of potential for storytelling feature work. and so he was in in Nairobi actually actually in Ethiopia that I came up with the idea for this podcast country that you've lived in. And it. It came about I mean came up through a number. Probably the simplest story is that I had done a story for for radio lab on their on their episode call translation and it was it was an episode about an incident that I watched that I I was I was actually following the secretary of state then John Kerry he gave a speech and this Ethiopian reporter in the room stood up and asked the question. I remember that episode yeah and Yeah it was. It was like this very brief I mean honestly the whole incident really the question and the answer which was at the end of this conference which I mean in the story we talk about how this there were all vetted questions until this one guy got up because carry decided to be generous in this one moment anyway. So this guy asked this question but. It was it was such a mistranslation around this one word and because of this one word. Secretary Kerry seemingly. Totally. Misunderstood the question answered it. In this way that was very unsatisfying and the guy ended up taking a quite a great risk to to ask this question on Ethiopian state TV. For nothing but it was this opportunity to learn about this one word serious, which has such a different meaning in east Africa.

National Nonprofit Day with Hannah Hethmon
"Hey Paul this is Hannah Hessman August. Seventeenth is national nonprofit day. My favorite kind of nonprofits are museums. Of course, all our favourite museums are locked down right now struggling to get through this virus like the rest of us. So I thought we'd celebrate them a little and I challenge you on that note to find a great podcast created by a museum. Go. Well Hannah under most other circumstances, this would have been a minor challenge. But as it turns out, we have a mutual friend that has a podcast about museums and that same friend was my eighth guest on this show. For my first recommendation, I'm going with museum archipelago. When the host Ian Elsner was my guest I mentioned an old episode about the Apollo Eleven landing site. But I'm not going to take the easy way out and I'm going to suggest to newer and very relevant topic statues. In this episode and talks about the relationship statues and museums, he goes into the tearing down toward causton statue and one of his guests talks about the slippery slope. So to celebrate this National Nonprofit Day learn about a nonprofit consider donating time or money to one that you believe in and let us know using the National Nonprofit Day Hashtag. Today's guest is Hannah Hetman. Hannah's the writer and producer of the Vagina Museum podcast. Yes. You heard that correctly. In New York there is a sex museum which I've been to. In Iceland, there is a Pinas Museum which I haven't been to. And now there is a Johnny Museum which opened in London in two thousand and nineteen. The podcast. Liked the museum is all about smashing shame and stigma around the vagina through awareness education and route puns. The first and recommended episode is entitled. See you next Tuesday as in the letter C. and the letter, you would you like me to wait for you to figure it out. As most people know there are many terms for the vagina, but there is one that stands out as the most offensive if you still haven't figured it out, it starts with the letter C and ends would Tuesday? This episode answers a lot of questions about that specific word. For last recommendation Hannah recommends if people saw that slavery was getting started why didn't they stop it by Q. and Abe? She says and I quote. This podcast is produced totally in house by President Lincoln's cottage in DC. They take questions from their guests. They can't answer at the moment and die super deep into them with the help of historians to address big ideas in American history loosely connected to Abraham. Lincoln. Of course, but it's so much more than a podcast about Lincoln Unquote. For. Today's episode hot sauce. I'm going to relay on link that Hannah gave me. If I got stuck trying to find an episode related to this day. Hanna is the owner of better lemon creative audio that produces podcast for museums, history organizations, and cultural nonprofits. So check out the director she created that anyone can add to. Come back on August, twenty fifth where I'll be talking about close a topic I have no business talking about.
