"This young man and in Boston, everybody Boston kids, all right. Was just killed by black licorice. Whoa! What What did her strangle him with one of those ropes of licorice? No, but that would seem more likely that that's how he die. He actually died from eating too much black. What? Just build up a black licorice that's poisonous. Apparently it is therea. So I like black licorice. I don't know about other people. But if I'm picking A snack food. I like it. I like a black licorice. I don't love the taste The problem with it. I get the the soft eaten kind that they sell at some of the healthier story. You can get a whole foods or new leaf. But it's also feels like so Nick. That after about three or four of them, you start to go. I don't know if my body can actually even process this. It feels so. All right. Golden's It feels country right, like you're going to gum up the works with that. That's definitely going to plug a hole somewhere. I definitely only have a couple of them when I choose that for a snack. So apparently black liquors can be dangerous. There's a 54 year old guy in Boston, who recently died because he overdosed on the stuff. His heart stopped. They say that you have a warning label. Like how much did he have to eat for this man? I'm going to tell you. He ate about a bag and a half every day For a few weeks. Black licorice is filled with something called You can do it glides arisen acid, Eliza Ristic. Glad I like lice arising. Its goal is horrific. Glaser or Isaac? Acid. Ah, and that's dangerous in high concentrations. Where's throws nutrients in your body out of whack. If you eat a little as two ounces a day for two weeks, it can kill you. And it's especially true for people over 40. So stick to candy. I am so excited to be joined by Michelle Kane and Tony Oklahma Okamoto skip sorry about that who are brand new authors or have just put out a new book or it's coming out when the release date for your new book it's coming out on October twenty seventh so it is out next month the friendly vegan cookbook we are so excited. Yeah. Well, congratulations on that we're definitely going to dive into some of that and things you cover there but. Before doing that I guess why don't I give you guys a chance to introduce yourselves talk a little about. Your background and and you know why you decided to to work together on this book. I'll start Tony and I run a website plant based on a budget and I have been plant-based for thirteen years. Now, it started originally for health reasons but has grown into. Of variety of reasons I've kept me begin for so long including environmentalism and. Animal issues and Michelle and I have been friends for. I would say we've been best seats for about five years now and I had tried to get her to write this book with me for a while at it. kind of went in the same way that I tried to get her to be my friend for awhile which. which was a funny thing I'd met her and I liked her and I just heard energy draws people end until I was like Oh man I really want to be friends with that Michelle girl and so I reached out to liking Michelle do you WanNa be my friend. But really I said, hey, have you ever WanNa get some dinner or anything like that let me know but she had just started working on world Vegan. And she said, I'm really busy right now focusing all my time but thanks for asking and. I was like Oh man okay. I. Know Big Time. Sure, those listening understanding the hustle especially when you start working on your own, it's like you sacrifice literally everything else in your life to be able to make it happen and. So, glad, Tony. So persistent as I am if you could describe me Michelle, you'd probably say persistent because I did not give up there I said okay. Well, what if we create content together the in content for World Vegan and we can do youtube videos and so then we started working together collaborating on Vegan projects which has really been the foundation of our relationship and so nice to bring that to the. This project, the friendly being cookbook. Absolutely I actually. Just preparing for this interview briefly before we before we got on I was watching some of the videos you guys have done together and they're Super Fun they're just I love the energy you both bring to the camera and. Gosh I hope it's not some of those I those first ones that we did where we were trying to act like. I'm doing this. Thing. Thank goodness. A Michelle. How about you? Yeah. So my name is Michelle Kane and I am a Vegan food blogger founder of the website World Vegan I create a lot of content on instruments while through the channel Vegan and my story started way back when I was a little kid I went vegetarian when I was eight years old and then went begin when I was in college and both of those choices were made just because I wanted to be making sure that my actions my food choices were reflecting my existing values of kindness, compassion and sustainability and all. At the time I hadn't even thought about health but soon after that, he became really passionate about health as well and realized that choosing choices that's kind of our planet and for animals and for other people is also so much better for our health. So follow that path have been loving it and for the past gosh thirteen years I've been really created, focused on creating content and resources to help make Vegan living easy delicious and fun for everyone just like with Tony and her website plant based on a budget. Does Growing Almonds Really Waste Too Much Water?

"Friend recently related to me a conversation that she'd had with her Barista, a well-known coffee chain. The BARISTA's convicted that she always bristles when her customers order almond milk for their la tastes because she said growing almonds waste so much water. You may have heard similar things about almonds and their negative impact on the environment. For example, maybe you've heard that it takes a gallon of water to produce a single almond and perhaps like my friends Brisa. You've even been avoiding almonds or almond milk out of concern about their water usage but as is so often the case there's a little more to this story. It's true that almonds are a very water intensive crop but not really more. So then most nuts if we were all to switch to pistachio milk or walnut milk and prompting farmers to start growing more of those nuts instead of growing so many almonds, we'd still be using about the same amount of water. According to data published in the June twenty eighteen issue of the journal Science, the Non Dairy alternatives that have the lowest water footprint are soy and oat milk but not milk's still use significantly less water to produce then cow's milk and in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, almond milk may actually be one of the better choices because these trap so much co two in their leaves more so than other crops but getting back to water issues, the reasons that almond uses such a large share of California's water supply is that they make up such a large share of. His cultural economy. The growing conditions in California are perfect for almonds plus almonds are really high value. Crop farmers earn far more per acre growing almonds than they can growing other crops and demand for almonds has also skyrocketed in the last two decades in part due to a sustained campaign by industry groups to promote the health benefits of almonds. Commodity Groups that support almond growers have spent millions of dollars funding research into almonds, effects on cholesterol, appetite, blood, sugar, body weight, and so forth all in an effort to convince consumers that almonds are super healthy food and it worked although our consumption of other nuts estate relatively steady our intake of alms has. Over the last half century in addition to eating more almonds were also buying more almond butter, topping our salads with almonds baking with almond flour, and ironically even though almond milk doesn't really contain the same benefits as all men's it is also perceived as being very healthy and for consumers who want to avoid both dairy, and so the almond milk has long been the go-to

"So D- what's top Richard this week this week we're talking about something called oxalate S- oxalate. Yes. This a type of compound that is found in certain types of foods that can be problematic for some people. Okay. So a so I Wanted to talk about because it's not problematic for everyone. But I. Think sometimes when you hear something is problematic, everyone gets freaked out and then they all everyone says, oh no, we can't eat those foods because they have oxalate in them, right? Right right. Right. So these were these naturally occurring foods exactly. So you know one of the things that I've talked a lot about in my books and my classes about these particular compounds are foods called anti nutrients, which are there in nature to kind of protect the plants you know in nature oftentimes, the idea with plants was that. It was to prevent predators from wiping out a whole crop of something. Right so we have things called fight AIDS and electons and things Fido Estrogens, and you know that will harmon insect some other things like make it. You know. Prevent. Absorption of certain nutrients so that a Predator may not continue to eat that. So there's a lot of things. oxalate is one of these types of anti nutrients it it is known it's an indigestible compound and food that prevents the proper absorption of calcium. from from that particular food if if there's also calcium in it or sometimes from other calcium containing foods that we eat with the food that has oxalate in my yeah. So it's kind of interesting. So some of the the biggest concentrations of oxalate are found in foods like spinach. and. Peanuts and chocolate. So you know that that tells us you know that sometimes people are eating a lot of these foods thinking that Oh. Yeah. This is great because these potentially healthy foods we have seen the Charles time. Yeah but we don't. We're not eating it in like mass quantities like we don't eat like huge amounts of spinach every day as salads or we don't eat it like we eat it but it's always a part of something else so. That's true. We haven't really ate like a salad you decide that you that you would start right? Right. So you know in in fact, you know when I was reading about this at said years ago these types of foods didn't pose a problem because few people ate large quantities of these foods other than Popeye, eating a bunch of spinach and we we didn't have a lot of people that. another food that that it's found in his rhubarb been fewer even fewer people rube bar back then. So but now you know a lot of health conscious people are eating gigantic spinach salads every day thinking that it's like the best thing ever and but it can lead to kidney stones and some other types of health issues tree. So and there's even some theories that maybe it's linked to autism. And that's kind of a theory. You know, I'm not going to go down that road, but I'm just reporting in case anybody else heard of that. They might WANNA research on reported statement about right. Well, the there doesn't seem to be there are studies, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive link to it. Probably more research is done on that okay but we do know for sure that it causes kidney stones will help us advocate this. So what happens is when oxalate is a compound that likes to bind assert to calcium specifically, but also iron so it can bind to both of those and. So, there's calcium in spinach. Spinach as a source of calcium as well. But we don't get much of that calcium out of it because because it because the oxalate binds and when we say bind would it means it's like a chemical reaction that when they get together like once chew up that spinach goes down into your gut and all that the it like forms a chemical reaction in the attached to each other and form a compound called House useful right? That's called Calcium oxalate. So. You know so that now it's bound that that calcium is now bound up in that molecule called Calcium oxalate and we can't really now absorb that calcium. Persist today's in the Gut and what what's really interesting is Our some of that Oxley. is broken down by bacteria in the GUT. and so you know one of them's called oxo oxo, b-actor foremen genus, and it uses that as an energy source the the bacteria uses that as an energy source. So so some of it gets used that way in the so we don't really ever get the benefit of that calcium that we eight. So

"Before I share tips on how to manage constipation. "Gary Welcome to the show. Hi, thanks for having me. Well, can you describe to our listeners what magic spoon radius of course magic spoon is a breakfast cereal company that I launched in April of two thousand nineteen. So just over a year ago and we are recreating all of your favorite shout who'd sugary cereals but without the sugar essentially. So imagine whatever your favorite junk cereal was an I imagine it worth more protein and less carbs zero sugar actually legitimately healthy for you. But with the and texture of all those sugary cereals, we we all loved growing up, right? Yeah. I had to look actually at the nutritional labels off both magic spoon and then fruit loops. A popular child with choice of of many, and I can see both serving of about one, hundred, ten, two, hundred, eighteen categories, but magic spoons. Macro makeup is completely different I'm seeing that it's fruit loops gets like eighty five percent of their calories from cops out of which about half come from Shoka match gets nearly eighty percent of its calories from fat and protein. How do you achieve that? Correct? So we've basically got a similar Carolina recount. We've swapped the protein and carbs around and we did riot by basing our SERIO ON A. Blend of protein slits, we primarily use a milk pudding ice lit as well as a way protein concentrates and use that instead of the wheat flour or corn flour rice lower than most classic serials, and then rather than sweetening with thigh high fructose, Corn Syrup, or perhaps akin sugar we use a blend of natural sweeteners that are essentially zero calories. So specifically use Stevia and monk route and three those in a specific combination allows us to get as close as possible to that sweet tasted sugary cereals without actually putting sugar into the products. I am because I was curious because I'm certain food scientists and then I saw you know like you have a blend of fruits, Steve Young at Lowe's and the nets reason to really achieve that that flavor or is it something else as well? So that's the sweetness the flavor itself. Ingram comes from natural flavors. Basically Ryan's depending on ever. We have a obliterate flavor, for example, some of us. Are Real Blueberry powder in that Labor, and then will actually get the colors from fruit and vegetable juices used in very small quantities. So not really adding any sugar but are You know some of our flavors resemble US beet juice, beet extracts read flavor fritzy cereal Spirulina to get a blue collar on our blueberry cereal. For example, the different gradients are different purposes but in general everything's entirely natural. Even. Though of course that doesn't mean very much nowadays but premium high-quality ingredients and high in protein sugar, a would not expect that actually when you look at like a package off fruit loops that they can be actual flavors in it. So it's it's quite impressive and you also have an oil plan with within magic spoon riot. Can you talk more about that direct? So he's a blend of. Highly Sunflower oil, and then avocado oil. Basically, you didn't oil to bind the colors in the flavorings to the base of the cereal and we wanted to, of course, was high quality. Fatty Acids rather than just like sure low-quality seed oils and so high elects unclear. Oil pretty different from regular Orlando it fatty acids and those are the same sort of saturated fats that you find extroversion. And of course, avocado oil very healthy as well. Got It and just going back to the sweeteners, and now that in recent years, the had been quite a few studies on a variety of different sweeteners and some of them half a good and some have a negative impact on one's microbiome worried as long fruit steve here on LAS, stand on that. Do you now that? Yeah, they're good impact which is why we chose them. So Chicago halls are generally very good. So bunch of using things like A. Recruits all tell which can have a negative impact on my own, but also caused just looting and general or stomach aches and a pretty large portion of the population. So we want to avoid sugar alcohols for that reason, which right meet means ingredients are more expensive. So obviously, stadium for are more expensive than a lot of the other sweeteners that might still be natural but he come with other issues, and so we wanted to avoid those issues, which is why you chose these three. "With summer in. Summer welcome back to the show I. AM so excited to talk with you again for the podcasts we've talked a lot outside the podcast at both of our podcasts and the last time we actually had a conversation for this show was four years ago, which is bananas at wild to me, but that's that's been that long. So a lot has happened in your life since then would love to catch up about all of it and just share with our audience what you've been up to yeah, I. Can't believe it's been four years ago I remember being so nervous because. I was. Hadn't been doing this work for as Long I. Think you get more comfortable. The longer you do the work that you do obviously on the podcast that youtube but I remember being sonorous and I mean a lot has happened. I, think that the biggest thing in my life was that I decided I wanted to have a child later in life and ended up fortunately getting pregnant and and having a child who is now a toddler. He'll be turning to this September which I think probably around the time at this little air and just navigating life as a as a person have it with a pregnancy. Going through even just like the emotions around whether I wanted to have that in my life was like a a huge saying that I experienced to end and then obviously raising a child and having a business. And trying to navigate those things and then having a global pandemic on top of it also. And the time that we the last since the last time I was on here. But I'm still I'm still helping people in the same capacity, a rebranded, my program it's called you on fire and I can talk away decided to do that but. Let me just always evolving, but still the same person in my core. And love that's he has so much has happened but I do feel such a same. Core energy that's always been the same from you like since I've known you was just you're like very. Dedicated to what you do and it really shows commits awesome. But it's it's been cool to see the iterations to happening though relaunching and rebranding I wanNA talk a lot about that too. But I also am just so curious to dive until having a child and. That whole thought process, not just from the place of what do I want in my life but also as a person with a history of poor body image and disordered eating in those struggles a lot of my clients will come to me and say, I'm thinking of having a kid or just got pregnant and you know I really concerned about what it's GonNa do to my recovery in my body image, and this is going to be like this next level challenge. So I know that's something that's on a lot of people's minds when they think about having children, what was your experience of that when you started thinking about it? No one got pregnant too. Yeah. It's it's really interesting I. Think because I really done so so much work and healed so much that by the time I got to a place where I wanted a child and then actually got pregnant I a really didn't worry too much about what my body was. Going to do but I think that's also because a had a lot of tools in place to support me with my changing body. It's one of those really interesting times I sort of find when I'm working with clients who are going through pregnancy. Sometimes, clients really fear what's happening to their body but a lifetime is actually a place where you can truly surrender because you really don't have control of your body's GonNa do bizarre things and I think that for a Lot of people you think it's going to be bad but then it's actually easier because you really just have to kind of surrender and it's easier to have an appreciation for what your body is capable of when you are growing baby inside of it like sometimes, that can actually be almost like a catalyst to having a greater sense of since and appreciation for your body. But there's a lot of things I did to support my body image in in the process like. I didn't weigh myself at all. There was no point in time where I weighed myself. So the first appointment I had with my amid wave Shiaz me do you want to be weighed like you want your wait to be tracked and I was like, no, I'm good and so I think that that was super helpful and that's and you're allowed to do that I think that you know you. You obviously have to work with your doctor and whether your doctor feels like dots information they need. But even if that is information is is necessary you can always ask to you know not have that number or a turnaround have be a blind way and but from from what I've observed and just in speaking to people, the majority of people of doctors will actually just be like, okay we. We don't need your way totally

What Is The Pe Diet

"Everyone is Martin from twenty minute fitness I'm here today connected with Dr Ted Niemann Dominate, and why don't you tell liberal listeners about your work and book? The P. Will Hi Martin Nice to meet you just call me Ted first of all. So I, I'm Ted name I'm a primary care doctor and I've been in practice for about twenty years up here in the Seattle area and I have a mechanical engineering background, and so I'm kind of like a just a huge Geek. A nerd kind of a Geek mechanical engineering background went to medical school and. I ended up just being obsessed with optimum health and I realized that the difference between the healthiest people I saw and the least healthy people I saw really just came down to diet and exercise. So all day long in these patient visits icy this huge spectrum of health You know one minute I might be seeing someone who has just amazing body composition and their incredible health, and they might even be an elite athlete and then the next minute I see someone who's just frail and decrepit and falling apart and has millions of problems and it eventually occurred to me. That the only difference between these people was really just diet and exercise over time, and if your diet and exercise is optimal, you just slowly get better and better over time and if it's not, you just slowly get worse and worse over time and then you know fifty years down the road you see this massive spectrum of health from incredibly healthy to incredibly unhealthy and I've just been obsessed for twenty years with exactly what is the mechanism between Diet and exercise driving health outcomes in exactly what you have to do to get the positive adaptations instead of the negative ones and I've you know I've just been all over the Diet spectrum I was raised vegetarian I went to Loma Linda University in Southern California, which is this famous blues Mecca were everyone's plant based So I've I've experimented with Air Free Diet from Vegan and plant based to, of course, oil spectrum of Paleo. Kito. Carnivora. You name it and everything in between, and then I eventually realized that all of these diets right about something and the answer is in between and the secret is finding out what's powering each and every one of these diets and making them more successful than. The Standard. American. Diet and that's really how I came up with this book. The P.. E. Diet, which is sort of the unified theory of macronutrients You know that's at least it has been described right so so how does like the P. E. Diet look in a nutshell what makes it different from say pay euro at the Ketogenic diets or you know all vegetarian diet for example. So what I did is just zoom way way way way way way out to the fifty thousand foot view and just looked at what is eating and I realized that plants are. Auto troops and they make all their own food and then animals are Hetero trips and we only exist because we constantly injust other living organisms. So plants are at the base of the food chain for all animals they're making all the food for animals and then animals are just either eating plants or animals that have themselves eating plants. What plants her doing is two very specific things. Number one, they're sucking minerals out of the soil, which is nitrogen for protein and and about a dozen other minerals that are crucial for plant and animal life, and then they're using solar. Energy and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to create these high energy chains of carbons with high energy bonds, carbon hydrogen bonds, and that's all of your dietary energy either carbs, fats. This is all solar energy stored is chemical energy. So I realized that you could divide your entire diet up into protein and minerals which getting room soil and energy, which is these high energy, carbon chains, carbs, or fats that plants creating from solar energy, and then I, sort of looked at all of human history in this evolutionary Lens. I realized that if you look at hunter gatherers, they have this. Incredibly. High Protein Diet. It's thirty three percent on average protein. If you look at worldwide hundred gatherer macronutrients and hunter-gatherers, they have an easy time getting protein they just go out and kill an animal and eat the whole thing you get plenty of protein and minerals but you're always a little bit starving for energy right? Could you talk about to kind of introduce yourself to listeners a little bit to start what were the biggest influences on your relationship with food and your body growing up Ooh I, love that question and thank you for having me. It's really interesting when I reflect on my relationship with soon, grind up I didn't think I had a lot of. Unhealthy eating. Messages I thought my family was relatively healthy. I thought I had a healthy relationship with food. In hindsight looking back I can see the the seeds of sort of unhealthy relationships creeping and mainly I would always eat sugar to self soothe as a kid and we used to have these nightly routines of always eating ice cream after dinner or using food as a reward, those sorts of situations which as an adult. Started to really come into fact in terms of my unhealthy eating habits and so as a child when I had this super active and I had a very high metabolism, it didn't appear to be an issue and then later in life I was able to see. Oh Wow, I really became attached to food and certain foods specifically became sort of my emotional crutch that I use as my wages Osu their self matic later in adulthood. Thank you for sharing that I. Love How you said. You know where you're talking about when people are kids if they're like just naturally in smaller bodies, it's like I love how you said it didn't matter that I was eating sugar like it didn't appear to matter. Right. So that's actually something that I run into a lot of the time when I coach kids for swimming and not something that I ran into growing up there people will be like, Oh you're swimmer it doesn't matter what you eat and the sense of. You can't see any changes on this people's bodies because they're teenagers and have insane metabolism's and also happened to have smaller body genetics I. Think it's so important to talk about that distinction. Yeah, and if I can also add that in terms of the body messages. Growing up because I was. So skinny might nickname literally on my sports teams or people my life would call me twiggy string bean and a my identity came really attached to having to be skinny to feel like I was valued or. Was Getting approval from people. So again and as an adult, you know sometimes we think your weight issues are just if you're overweight but for me, there is always this angst around I have to stay skinny because that's my identity in that's where my word comes from and so I didn't think I had. People affecting my body image growing up either I thought I had a lot of love for the people around me but even these seemingly harmless messages or fun nicknames were actually really shaping my identity to my body. Yes. So how did you go from that from kind of struggling with your relationship with food and with your body as a teen and maybe until like early twenties to transitioning to work with women on food freedom and specifically through energy work? Yeah. Will my story really took a turn it might twenty. So I would say most of my childhood teens and even young. Adult I felt like I had an okay relationship with food. But in my twenties I started to develop really severe eating disorder bulimia. Yeah and that happened because I started to go on a diet and I thought I wanna be really healthy and I wanted to see if I, can you know shed a few extra pounds and and that turned into a very obsessive? Counting calories coming up with really strict food roles and as a result, I just wasn't nursing my body and I was getting anxiety around what to eat and and it leads you very severe been gene and then bingeing purging I got stuck in that vicious cycle and suddenly I felt like. Oh. My Gosh how is life? Like you know the Pitney came one day when I was over the toilet that Oh, my God, this is not normal or healthy ns somehow become minority and so that became a struggle for six years. Once I got pulled into that I just was struggling so hard to get out and it controlled my life and it became my mission to heal my Sol's. So that I could then help other women because I did not want another woman to ever have to go through the agony and the like the torture that I was living in in my mind in just my reality, it was consumed and I lost myself to it and I was determined to get myself back if not better and then do everything in my power to help woman y'all. So that kind of started my like. My determination to figure this out and I was determined to try any in everything to to get better and so for a long time I, sort of was always turning to food. Let me try and control food. Let me use little power in. That will be my way to get over this like I'm just going to be perfect tomorrow. And that Kinda like I tried that over and over again and not just never worked right. The answer was not controlling food, and so I started to them look outside of that at other healing modalities. And I just got desperate inserted China everything in eventually stumbled Pon emotional freedom technique also noticed tapping and things like ricky and emotion code, and all these different energy healing modalities and Literally within a matter, six months pretty much all of my quote unquote symptoms seemingly disappeared like I just felt whole and complete again I felt like myself again, I felt empowered in normal again and it wasn't a fight or struggle. It just seems like as I got it through issue and really started to uncover all of these repressed emotions in the subconscious programming and these wounds. I didn't even know I was carrying. That were leading me to say stock in these unhealthy habits. Omega, it was like a radical shift, and so that is what made me then realized I need to get this massive these modalities out to as many women as I can because it may not be the one thing that's going to help but it is certainly missing piece in the equation and I think a lot of times we don't look at these other modalities that can be so powerful in conjunction with like proper nutrition or you know a good mindset etcetera. Yeah we're therapy exactly anything like that. Exactly.

An autoimmune disorder where individuals basically just just one week of the fasting mimicking diet or. or six months on the Keita. Genetic Diet so much longer period beyond the ketogenic diet versus the week of the fasting mimicking diet. They had an improvement in in clinical measures for a variety of clinical measures for for Multiple Sclerosis the animal studies sort of confirmed that. That the you know there was a lot a lot of effects on on t regulatory cells and a variety of different effects on autoimmune regulation from the fasting mimicking diet or also fasting. So big differences there and with respect to translating animal to to mouse studies but again. there has been some pilot studies looking at. Fasting and the effects on auto immune disease like multiple sclerosis when I just mentioned there's also been some pilot studies looking at a forty eight hour water fast in humans and there was a trend towards the adipose stem cell activation like I just mentioned with the Animal Studies.

Why You Should Stop Snacking And Start Fasting

"Hello Jason. Welcome to the PODCAST. Thanks for having me on. We're GONNA have a great chat I. Loved Your Latest Book that you co wrote with eve and Meghan, and this is titled Life in the Fast Lane. I'm curious to start. How does somebody WHO's a kidney specialists get? So interested in fasting as a subject yeah. That's a great question I think that what happened is that as? A kidney specialists, what I do is I see a lot of type two diabetics and as we've had this sort of increasing obesity epidemic since the nineteen seventies that sort of was followed by an epidemic of type two diabetes starting in the late nineteen eighties, nineteen nineties, and then type two diabetes is actually far and away the most common cause of kidney disease. So as you know we went into the two, thousand, two, thousand ten we started to see much more and more of type two diabetes related kidney disease. So I actually encountered it quite a bit and as it became more and more important part of my practice I started to think about weight loss because the entire way that we treat you know. Disease is sort of backwards that is if you look at type two diabetes related kidney disease, for example, we spend a lot of money and effort trying to design drugs and dialysis and all that sort of stuff. However, the actual treatment doesn't make sense because we have kidney disease from type two diabetes while the answers to how to get rid of it is. Telling you right there if you have if you don't have type two diabetes, then you can't get diabetic related disease and if you lose weight year type two diabetes will get better. So the real answer to this whole problem lies in getting to the root cause, which is the weight. If you lose weight, then you don't get the type two diabetes. You don't get the kidney disease and that's really the only good way to treat the disease yet as a medical profession nobody was interested. In weight loss and to a large extent nobis really interested. We started gave up this entire concept which is so important. So fundamental to human health because this is what we face in North America today, lot of problems of of touchy diabetes and obesity, and we gave it up to like you know weight watchers, Jenny Craig and all those sorts of things it's like that's fine but it's really an important subject. So that's when I started to look at the question of weight loss and When I looked at it was clear that there wasn't a lot of really good thinking in the area. The entire field was dominated by sort of calories in calories out theory that is you know we've all heard this before you know it's just a matter of eating fewer calories and exercising more like if you actually think about it for a little bit, it actually makes very little sense that is you know it's a very sort of simplistic argument because the question is not whether people are eating more calories or burning less calories. The question is sort of wire the eating mark how And why are they not burn as many calories and it turns out that the real answer to why we're gaining weight is more likely related to our hormones. Then the number of calories were eating as an example, you can eat two different foods of the same. The same number calories. So you could eat broccoli or you could drink Soda Strictly Soda. Well, it's very easy to gain weight if you're drinking soda. But almost nobody gained weight eating Broccoli. So the point is that for two foods that are the same calories they're completely different in the minute you put it in your mouth. The hormonal response to those two foods is completely and utterly different. So if the hormones different the hormonal instructions that we deliver to our body or going to be completely different. So a simple example as tidy if you drink sugary soda, there's almost no sitadi signalling. You don't feel full from drinking sugary soda yet if you eat a large number of calories of Broccoli or steak or any sort of real. Natural food you will get full. So that's a simple example of how the body responds to these calories to foods of equal calories but totally different response from our bodies, and therefore what's important is not just the number of calories that this sort of hormonal response and that's you know that's what I talk about. A lot of is this sort of trying to get to the root cause of what causes weight gain rather than this, very, very simplistic sort of calories in calories out model which to be honest hasn't really helped anybody that is it's in the standard sort of advice for. Doctors and Dietitians everybody to count your calories yet it almost helps nobody. So you know here we have a treatment which is counting calories and doing calorie restricted diets, which has a failure rate's probably on the order of ninety nine percent. So it's like why would that be standard treatment if the failure rates like ninety, nine percent I, it's not just my opinion you see it in the numbers like the numbers don't lie there's more and more obesity out there people try to lose weight they count their calories and they don't lose weight. So it's not a very good strategy from all sorts of from all angles

This, question is from a listener named Amy who writes, Hi, I'm a forty two year old married mother of five kids when I was younger, I struggled with an eating disorder and while I have mostly recovered still struggle at times intuitive eating was literally life changing for me and has helped so much in my recovery. However, I'm confused about how to implement some of the strategies with a large family I know that for my own recovery A. Big Part of rejecting diet culture was making certain trigger food's always available. So those foods did not bring feelings of restriction and then subsequent disordered eating behavior. However, I'm noticing that within my own family when we do have special food such as those found during holidays or parties in the house, the entire family seems to have the scarcity mindset and consume those foods at a higher rate simply because they're thinking better, eat it now before it's gone. which is totally true with so many people in our household special foods do not last long at all I really want to help my children avoid disordered eating, but it is simply not practical nor within our budget to keep those more desirable food's always available our family is well fed and there's always plenty to eat in the house. But when special occasions arise, we have special foods I feel like the better eat it now before it's gone. Slash. Scarcity mindset starts to kick in what do you suggest? How can I help my family avoid scarcity mindset with special foods when just by virtue of budgetary limits and the number of people living in our house, those special foods are more scarce. Thank you. So would love to hear your thoughts on that questions of a while. I love this question I relate to it and the listener who wrote it so much I too am a mom. I only have one kid not five. So we're on different both in that way but. I too am a mom and have a background as the listener says the eating disorder in her case. I always say disordered eating in mine because I never had a diagnosis even though the whole concept of how these things diagnosed can be problematic since I never had one I just had a disordered eating background and a part of my recovery that was incredibly important like a listener our rights is. A making the quote unquote I'm forbidden foods available and trying to make them just a normal low key part of how food flows through my life. So that I. Don't set myself up for the kind of restriction. Cycle, and also because I, I really enjoy food and so part of you know my recovery was just wasn't is about making these foods that I love and sort of limited just available so that I can enjoy them rate just for the sake of the pleasure Sell released a question on so many levels and first and foremost. I think I approach it as a mom and as a former kid. Dieter. We don't know when this person started their eating disorder they're dieting but I started when I was very, very young and so as a mom as now a five-year-old's. One of my main goals really in life as a mom is to raise a child who trust her appetite. Could trust her behavior around food and who can eat without a lot of drama and a lot of sort of negative emotional stuff happening at the same time. So I think that's a goal that this mom shares I think that's kind of underlying the question is. How do I help my family? Have a relationship with food that is pleasurable and? Not marked by a ton of drama, you know given her back nick event is the reality of of their budget and. You Know How put food on the table.

"I. WanNa start off by asking you. So your brand is main street Vegan. Why mainstream? Vegan? Well it's a story actually rip I went to a pita fundraiser late in two thousand ten and they showed videos and I've been seeing videos like this for forty years. It took me quite a while to get from. Vegetarian Vegan back in the day. So I've been around this movement for ever. And I've seen those videos about things that humans do to animals but that night, my heart was extra. And all I wanted to do was write a check for one hundred, thousand dollars in hand it to the pita founder Ingrid newkirk and say here, go fix something but the check would have bounced. So I got on the train thinking okay. What's the plan B. and I literally had inspiration I don't know how to explain this. You know you could say God you could say angels on what all I know is that it came to me very clearly okay you don't have one hundred, thousand K. spare but what you can do is make your. Next Book Main Street Vegan, we want it to be geared to the young woman that you were in Wheaton Illinois in nineteen eighty three when you finally stopped messing around and became a one hundred percent fulltime Vegan it needs to have forty short chapters with a recipe at the end of each one and I'm just kind of taking notes in my head of I could do this, I can do this. So my wonderful literary agent sold the proposal to torture Penguin and the editor called to say so happy to have you happy to have the book. But. We hate main street. You need to change the title and they'd bought it. So I had to do something and I'm coming up with these other titles and they were so boring. But I kept trying to write and then I had a begin miracle and I really do believe that this is the age of those believed that this is the time when all these other ridiculous diets are going to go. The way of the dinosaur plant based is going to be the only thing that sensible people are interested in and the idea that we are killing our fellow beings and destroying the planet is going to start to look like are you serious people really did that? So my Vegan Miracle That day. Was Walking up Broadway. We saw somebody so famous, you can recognize him from the back and that was Michael Moore Now, he had liked another book that I had written a weight loss book fit from within, and so I just handed my card to the woman who was with him and a few seconds. Later I hear Victoria there is Michael Moore, following me up Broadway and we started talking and then we started talking on the phone and on one of these phone conversations I said the book that I'm supposed to write should be called mainstreet Vegan publisher hates main street he said they're wrong. Let me talk to him talk to them so. In a three way call with an Academy Award winner my editor in me he convinced her she convinced the higher ups and when she called to say Main Street Vegan is your title everything else started to pop and I've been given my mission for the rest of my life. So why main street because this thing that we do whether we're coming from the health or the environment or the animals or whatever this is for everybody this is not some elitist thing. We don't have to be rich. We don't have to be leftover hippies or punk rockers. We can just be who we are eat reasonably and love more and to me that's Main Street That is mainstream nuts. you landed on something that just resonated and you knew of his right thing. And I grew up two blocks off main street in Kansas City Missouri. So that may have had something to do with it and mainstream Vegan was at your eighth or Ninth Book Because you've written. Now Than Books Right I've written thirteen. So Main Street Vegan would've been eleven. And

I'm doing really well, I'm excited to talk to you today I'm excited to chat with you too. It's I went and looked back at our previous episode. We did with Marnie there and it's been years. So a long time and a lot has happened in both our world. So back when we did that last episode, you weren't married now you're married, you've had a new diagnosis lyme disease and you're back on the Vegan Diet. So lots we can get into. Yeah. Life has changed a lot. I remember recording that with you. Guys in my old apartment where I lived alone with my cat and life has certainly changed quite a bit since then we'll at that time we did that recording it seem like your health was in a pretty good place for a timeline point here let's let's talk about where your health was at at that time. Yeah. So I may have thought my health was maybe in a good place, but it was around that time. I'm trying to think around three years ago. Exactly is when my health started to decline and really take Depp I think when we talked may have been maybe the very end of me feeling pretty good and. Then I started to experience different symptoms like full body hives I had a uterine cyber ahead which I ended up having surgically removed. I started to be very chronically fatigued, but I do believe when we last spoke I was still holding onto the final shreds of feeling good or saw it and then yeah things kind of exploded from there. So toward the end of twenty, what would this have been twenty would have been twenty seventeen that we chatted. Yeah. Toward the middle to the end of twenty seventeen is when these health issues started popping up and I was very confused about all ams and what was going on and. At the time it didn't even cross my mind that all of these health issues could be intertwined and could have the same root cause thought my entire body was just breaking down bit by bit and piece by piece, and ultimately what I finally did realize the following year that this was all the same root cause similar root cause and I was diagnosed with lyme disease then I realized okay. The hives, the fatigue, the brain fog lack of energy. The fiber that I had hormone imbalances got issues. All of this could be drawn back to lyme disease switch ended up being a chronic lyme disease diagnosis meaning that I had had my. For, at least a year. But when I look back on my life, it seems that I actually had lyme for more like both likely a decade dot was a pretty wild time in my life and I'm sure we'll get into all the details, but I've been treated for the last two and a half years and it's been quite a journey. So after we talked and the symptoms started to creep up on you what was. The first step you did before getting diagnosed, did you were you already seeing a doctor at that time that you brought these issues up to or did you find a new doctor? What did the path look like to getting that diagnosis? So I was seeing a few different doctors at that time I've always geared toward a more holistic approach. So I was seeing a functional medicine doctor which really combines Western and eastern medicine practices. I went to my functional medicine doctor and he really didn't know what was going on. He saw the hives that I had all over my body which were so itchy. So terrible. So read they lasted for ten months and during that time I couldn't even sleep at night because I was so itchy I was in so much pain. It covered every single inch of my body except for my face. And my feet actually it was on my face to just not as bad as the rest of my body

Of those vitamins that is very crucial in the functioning of our immune systems It's it's important for the production of red blood cells, which is haemoglobin. It works in our liver to help us detoxify things and it's also important for our brain neurotransmitters in the brain. So it's a very important vitamins. Today wanted to talk about some of its benefits in its food sources. Right let's dig into this vitamin B. Six yeah. So how many bees are there? There are actually eight different B vitamins. Okay. So here comes a layman's question share there are. Many many other letters of the alphabet. Why are they? All these crammed into be? Is there a purpose for that as some kind of scientific thing for that or no? Well this is a good question. If we go all the way back to you know how vitamins were first discovered and then kind of isolated in the foods they they came up with You know like the first one was a so yeah we're using letters as the names for these vitamins and we're logical to me. But what happened with the bees was that I thought there was only one th one type of nutrient that was. A B. Vitamin and B vitamins have the. Distinct role in the body of helping to convert our macro nutrients and energy. So like it's it's what helps turn our carbs in our fat and proteins into energy within ourselves. Pretty important. So so it was I. thought that there was only one of those that did that and later it was discovered that there are more related ones relate and so they started nate numbering them you know one, two, three. Okay or What's really interesting is there's there's an today we know that there are eight different numbered. B.. Vitamins but they don't go in order like really weird. It's like you got be one B two and b three but then there's no vitamin B four and then it's b five and B six and b seven but no eight and there's nine but no ten or eleven, and then there's a twelve do they relate to something? Important or or or are they all over the place? Oh, well, they like I said, they work as a group all involved in energy production within the body but then they also have other roles like individually. So for an and so what happened with the numbering of the bees is just you know to fill fill out that story is that some of those ones like vitamin B. Four in vitamin B., not I'm I'm sorry V. Ten. Or Eleven th. It was later discovered that those were they were compounds that are needed in the body, but they're not necessarily a vitamin. So vitamins have a very specific definition that they Our Body can't make them on its own until we have to get them from foods and those particular compounds that were originally thought to be a vitamin and had been given a number for a be vitamin were later found that they actually are not. not necessarily only needed to be derived by foods at our body can actually make them on its own from other materials, and so they were you know no longer called vitamin before vitamin B. Ten and eleven. So they have different names vitamin before is now called Choline Oh shall. Be Four. But then it's not a vitamin because it's right. Exactly. So yeah very interesting. Little Vitamin B eight is now known as Inositol. which is a compound that it our body can make on its own. We can get it from foods as well, but it's just not considered a vitamin anymore or what about vitamin D? Vitamin D. now, that's an interesting one because yes, we can make it within our body completely completely within our bodies. So that's an interesting one because there is controversy around that whether is this actually a vitamin or is it hormone right? Because it has hormone like activity? So I am like The rabbit. Right. Six is if important, you know like I said in in energy production within the body, but it has these other roles and some of those roles are You know detoxification but specifically, the brain functioning this is really important because it's involved in the production of several different neurotransmitters in the brain Namely Dopamine Serotonin and something called Gaba is G. A. B. A. but that stands for Gamma buroric acid and these all require vitamin B. six in order to be formed in the brain. There they all help us feel better, they definitely do and here's one of the things is I think a lot of times when we speak of vitamins and I try to explain this in layman terms to people about what's going on in our body bodies like a big chemical reaction going on in there. But think of it more in terms of like maybe a recipe and maybe even specifically a baking recipe like cake or something that requires specific amounts of certain ingredients in. If you don't have enough of what you need that recipes, not gonNA turn out right? You know you might still get something, but it's not gonna be perfect, right? It's not going to get you what you really want. It's not gonNA taste the same and might not have the right texture Nov that. So if we don't have enough of a specific vitamin that does its particular roles in the body than the whole thing is impaired. So. Can only imagine how much you're going on in the middle of endemic your responsible for the health safety and happiness of something two point six, million people I had to look up. That's that's larger than nearly half of the states in our country. So you've got a big job and I'm I'm so pleased that we're able to make a little time to share your journey on your health journey and everything else you're doing. So thank you for making time to be with us today. Thank you and you know. Hello from Brooklyn. New York and you're right Brooklyn is a huge place of in the numbers of two point, six, million documented. But as far more and we were a separate city and instead of one of the counties in New York as a separate city will be the third largest city in America extremely diverse forty seven percent of the burrow speaks a language other than English at home. So there are a lot of opportunities to really oblivious people here in the borrow Brooklyn. The third largest city that that is amazing I cannot imagine. Okay, well, an even bigger job than than maybe I understood again I know you like going on and I wish we had more time to dig into so much of your role at especially with with. Everything doing public health, we'll get a little bit to that. Started in in health everyone gets no you. Tell us a little bit about your background and you spent twenty two years as a police officer. You've been a state senator. Now, of course, you're the broke president what drove you into public service. Why did you know that was your calling? And that's a great question oftentimes we start out on a journey only to take a detour to find out that that is really without purpose, a may be I had a negative encounter with a police police officers as a child, and it evolved into a civil rights. Leaders come in to me and twelve other young men in asking us to go into law enforcement fight from within, and I was extremely reluctant because I. Was A computer program wanted to become Cisco qualified and open my own firm of but I had a lot of respect for them. It was a very turbulent period in new. York with was a lot of tension some similar to what you're seeing now between police communities and I, joined you and Saudi inauguration one, hundred blacks enforcement chair, and I'll goal was to build a better symbiotic relationship with law enforcement communities and communities of color. After twenty two years I retired as a captain and I really saw a bad police in public safety. was responding a reactively to some of the problems that were created and I wanted to have a more proactive approach in Iran to stay Senate was elected served a four terms in the state senate and pass some really good bills around a health public safety in later of ran to become the ball president of Brooklyn of this in other municipalities, you probably call this the county executives of, but I'm the county executive board, the county of teams in New York. Amazing, IT'S A. Son's to hear when a negative situation is is transformed in something that drives you. My own personal health journey was due to the loss of a loved one. Yeah different than kind of course. But but I think that mark of a true leader you can. Say Take something like that and transform it into a positive even and I commend you for all the work you've done over the last three decades in public service Let's transition a little bit to your health journey. On the personal side I, know you were diagnosed with type two diabetes and transformed your health. As many of the folks watching listening this are doing or have done themselves share a little bit about. babies start with what happened where were you at that time and what were some of the changes that you implemented in your own life? And I think. You said something very important on a touch on it as we evolve folks of about. How do you turn around these of really missteps or encounters and you know my mother told me as a child if you're fortunate to live long enough you're going to be misfortunate to experience pain. We must find ways to turn pain into purpose and just as in law enforcement encounter it was extremely painful a ahead to turn it into a purposeful journey. In law enforcement and it was really a free lewd two of the experience of being diagnosed attack diabetes. I was out of the country at the time when I was experiencing of discomfort in my stomach. I thought it was calling cancer beyond his because just lost friend from it at the time and it was the same tech symptoms wasn't gassed wasn't moving stationary. And when I returned to America. I said I will go to the doctor in that morning. When I woke up, I couldn't even see the alarm clock. It wasn't sleeping my eyes but just that as my vision. Just totally just sort of lost particularly my left eye my right. I was going as well and I was experienced for some time almost a month tangling in my hands and feet. And I couldn't feel my right eye thought it was due to. Plan, you know football and it was just nerve damage but little did I know after I went to the doctor to check out just comfort in my stomach A. I had an ulcer

"Okay here we are season two of the plant strong podcast. I'm here with Nima Delgado, I pronounce that. Perfectly. and. The theme for Season Two is the heart of a hero. Obviously with you, you have more than the heart of the of a hero you have the APPs of a hero you have quads of a hero. But it's people that are really changing the game. And no no doubt about it. You are. You're changing the game you've taken a completely different path than the traditional path. the last eighteen months have been incredibly impressive for you. You're on the cover of muscle and fitness April two, thousand eighteen. You obviously one of the stars in the, game? Changers. You. Or, your social media influence over four hundred, thousand followers on your on your I. Pretty. Pretty impressive. Are you happy where you are right now? Yeah. Happy. But never satisfied like a true athlete right I think. I have big goals and ever since I started this, I didn't have those goals when I first started. This was kind of something I just ended up on this path and once I, was in it it felt right to me. So I ended up pursuing it but. Since I've seen what's Possible, to accomplish. Whenever I started I now, my goals are set really high so we'll. We'll talk about that. Yeah of course before we do Tell me how old are you just turned? Thirty thirty years old so I mean you're you're you're still a spring chicken. That's really exciting when I think about where I was when. When I was thirty, I wasn't even a firefighter yet I mean I was I was doing triathlons. It's exciting. And so. When people say you know what you do? Are you a professional bodybuilder? What's your description? That's a really good question sometimes, I don't even know what to say Because I although I am a professional bodybuilder, I've never competed in bodybuilding for income if that makes sense. So it's not something that you really pursue for money because there's not much money in the sport as more money like making businesses around what you do in maybe sponsorships and everything like that. So I wouldn't say I'm a professional body just like A. Hobby. Bodybuilder. Well. But. I mean. To me re the first Vegan to ever get on the cover of muscle and fitness. Yes to my to my knowledge and I asked them their knowledge as well at the first Vegan to ever be on the cover and how did that come to pass Funny Story I was actually competing two thousand eighteen for the Arnold Classic and even just to compete at the Arnold you have to get invited. So it was like a really big accomplishment for me to even get invited because that's like the top thirty guys in my category. So I got invited and I was training really hard up for that show because I wanted to make a big impact and just like every time I step on stage it's not just stepping onstage for me. It's like. Almost, like stepping onstage for the entire being and movement, everybody's looking to me to use me as an example. So that adds a little bit of added pressure for me but. I take that with you know what I mean. It motivates me a lot. So I was prepping for that show and Muslim fitness had reached out to me because we had done a shoot in the past and they reach out to do another shoot for them, but it was more for was more for like a workout and I was going to be the model and I had done that before and this time around. I just straight up ask the editor I was a hey, is there any way I can share my story of what I'm doing because I feel like your listeners might be really interested in it like I'm the only Vegan in my league competing the Arnold Blah Blah Blah and told him my story and they really loved it and when we went to do the photo shoot. They basically pulled me aside and hey, we're going to do a cover try and I was like what's that and he's like well, we're GONNA try to get you on the cover, but we're just gonNA take some some shots if we're doing a cover shoot and I was like okay cool. But I really try to keep my expectations really low I was like that's not going to happen never going to happen and yeah, a few months later maybe a month later two months later. A friend of mine actually sent me a text message of the cover with me on it and I'm like, what is this joke in me right now like photoshop this and send it to me. He's like I just got the email in my inbox and it's you on the cover and I was just like you do a backflip no, I just I was just sitting in disbelief and I remember looking at it I was like there's no way this just happened and because I knew Mike. What a personal accomplishment it was for me but like a victory for this movement and everything that I've been trying to do because, I knew that there hadn't been one before. So for me to be the first one kind of door for for other athletes because I'm sure there's going to be plenty in the future or you have been since but yeah, it was just like a really good moment that I'd like to just take in huge. Yeah. So You keep using the term Vegan how would you describe your lifestyle? Lifestyle. Vegan I wear the badge. You know I'm not afraid to say the word. Vegan I'm not afraid to be labeled as a Vegan because it is who I am and I really think that. There's been a misconception about around the word Vegan for a while now, and it kind of is getting better I feel. But I think it's about rebranding the word and. Changing the way feel whenever they hear the word Vegan instead of feeling like judged they should feel excited or feel inspired or feel empowered or however they feel I think we should just kind of shift that a little bit. So seeing people that are calling themselves Vegan and doing things that other people are inspired by I think it's a really good way of. Rebranding.

"Can you tell us some of the things that you did to optimize your son's health or development since he was born I'm a new mom and I would love to know how you approach diet supplements routines. ETC thank you. And there are also some tag along questions here. That have to do with what the common deficiencies are in in toddlers. So I think Andrew Ask that question. So I'm going to talk about that right now I would say One of the main main things that I have done is Omega Three Dha high. Dha Supplementation. Both during breastfeeding during pregnancy, we'll starting in during pregnancy but pregnancy breastfeeding and then. Getting, preformed Dha, to my son. and. The Way I do that is I take one of my High Dha capsules and I cut it open and I put it in his oatmeal with lots of butter and he just. So, whereas during fetal growth, calories can help promote. You know growth they're not sufficient for brain development. brain development appropriate development requires a sufficient intake of protein zinc, iron, choline, full iodine, and the omega three fatty acids. As, well as vitamins ad B six and B twelve, and if you failure to provide those key nutrients during that critical period can actually result in long-term brain deficits. so the common. Toddler nutritional deficiencies. Omega three. So consumption of. EPA from foods contributes you know so. Mostly those are found in marine sources. it's a very small amount. You know children children are only getting about forty milligrams of the preformed Dha and EPA. And two, thousand, fifteen. There was a really big study about that. You know showed eating fish. Actually even fish. The fish that has particularly for high mega three and low in mercury. Still even protected against toxic effects of Mercury in a developing fetus, which is the most sensitive sensitive to mercury. And there was another study that was published. Huge huge Meta study looked at looked at not only. Prospective Studies. which are associated associated can't really establish causation, but they also looked at randomized controlled trials in children. So the studies looked at pregnant women and also young children and that that were either given fish or eating having a high intake of fish. Or not and it was found not the the mothers and children even randomized control trials that were given fish. I had improved intelligence scores like significantly improved even up to like nine points. And these children also had higher levels of Mercury as well. But they had higher levels of Dha which superseded whatever you know. Minor effects the mercury hat again, we talked about earlier conversation there a fish that are high mega three and lower number mercury at you can be you know things like Salmon While Alaskan salmon or like I mentioned the the farmed Atlantic at least that's the only one I know of that's farmed. Salmon. Sardines. Herring. Mackerel of this fish that are fatty also behind Omega, three and those ones are lower in mercury smaller Fisher mercury. So I try to give him I try to get my son to eat salmon in some form or another, and he'll eat little little amounts of it. And like I said, I also supplemented with fish oil. I was also taking. Drum, breastfeeding. I was I was taking three grams a day of of Dha and that you know is is was being delivered him in breast milk I'll get to that in just a minute though. Iron is another another one particularly infants between six six and eleven months they they have a low about ten percent of those infants have low intake of iron. of course, irons high in in in meets You know fish is another one that you can find iron in. I was actually giving my son when he was doing solid foods like when I when he was when I introduce solid foods at around six months. I would blend up some salmon cooked salmon blended up with either Cooked Cherries blueberries, and I would blended altogether. So it kind of gave the Sam sweet taste and really liked that. When he was young.

"So tell me about your relationship with food growing up. Well, I grew up in a family of six kids. I'm the youngest of six kids and the three girls in our family, and some of my earliest memories with food would be sitting around the dinner table. We were always forced to finish everything on our plate that was kind of one of the rules and I was always the last one to leave. It would take me forever because I hated canned fruit and HAM and. I hated actually I really doesn't like a lot of the food that we eat growing up, but I would always be the last wanNA delete the table. So my dad would read a page of a book to me in that I'd have to take another bite in the needed read another page I've had to take another right do that for like an hour and a half so I think my earliest association in. In that sense was less about enjoyment or less about hunger. Neither of those things really factor in it was more like fitting into family structure and that make sense. There's like six of us right and so it was sort of necessity I. think this is our eating time and we ended early tight budget. So Ma made this food for US tonight dad paid burden was like now time to eat. So those are. Really early memories but I think in terms of like developing my larger ideas about eating and how it connected to my body developed a little bit later, surrounding a lot of my mom's ideas about filming entity and what it means to be beautiful and a lot of that was wrapped up in fitness and being really small and being a frail. So she wake up like hearing all of these stories about how tiny. She was in her youth in even as our mother like a lot of stories about her doctors commenting in how thin she was, and she would say all the time. She would say things about how she just doesn't think about food and we would know that she would forget and I say forget in quotes because I'm not really sure what that means to forget to eat that doesn't seem like very human, right? But she would forget to eat and so there was just a lot of obsession or focus on being really small and thin and having people commenting on her body in hurry telling that to US ally and to this day I'm not sure that she's even aware that that's a thing that she did or does it just seem so ingrained in scientists constant stream of narration. So and the youngest and my two older sisters and so I always felt like they kind of fit in line with her desires and expectations or what her girls would be, which is very tiny and small and I too frail and I didn't fit into that and started to notice that right around adolescents like. Middle. School I never forgot to eat like that. We can never going to happen to me I loved always have loved loved loved eating and adolescence I was growing and so I had kind of this an ending appetite and I can remember coming home from school and like I think there was a good month when I would make myself an entire casserole dish of custard and just eat the whole thing and when I got home I was just like that was my tree to end and I was starving when I got home and I would just completely divan so I started to grow quite a bit and I think that was when I started to grow a notice that my Body was just rounder softer than my sisters and then of course, right around that time body, our bodies were attached to male desire. So like you're small, you need to be small and petite and frail to attract male attention, and that was very important. Now, able in, you know the subtle ways that you learn those messages both at home but in every other stories

Love You even talk about hair and the mental side of nutrition and the you share so much of your story. So for those people who haven't been following, you aren't familiar with your story. Tell us a little bit about your own history with Diet and exercise. Yes. So previously I mean I struggled with an eating a body image disorder for years of my life I. Can Remember even in high school struggling with it being on the cheerleading squad and just feeling the pressure of being in front of people and being that you need Graham number three that I am such a perfectionist and people pleaser I felt really out of control and a lot of areas of my life like family life and so I think I took that out on. Wanting to control my diet and wanting to control my exercise, and so really you know under eating over exercising was the name of the game for a long time of my life, and then going into college still not really knowing anything when it comes to nutrition and training, and so just doing what I saw in magazines, which was endless amounts of cardio restricting my caloric intake. and. Then from there, I met my husband after I graduated college. He really was the first person to number one as a boyfriend at the time kind of ask me honestly, if I had an eating disorder and that was the first time that someone really had bluntly asked me especially someone that you know I was dating at the time. Can I ask how do you remember your first thought when he asked that question where you defensive? Yes. Very defensive and very like why do you care this is not something that you need to know about type of pushing it off but then something inside of me was like, okay, he's actually asking from A. Place of love and it was like inside I wanted everything in me to be better because I was so like just feeling. So consumed by at all but yes, I remember having mixed feelings like this is crazy that you're asking me bluntly on our first date but this is also like total divine thing and so I felt safe in that time in you know he was one of the first people that I actually said Yeah I really struggling I don't know what to do when it comes to nutrition. I feel. So out of control in my body and I feel like I'm constantly trying to control and it's just not working in my favor and I was just exhausted mentally physically my hair would was not growing my you know my skin was constantly breaking out and I felt bloated all the time and it was just like there is things in my body that were not working properly and so I'm so grateful that he did ask that because that's what he studied in college he studied health and exercise science and sports nutrition and so. He was very, very interested in helping people in terms of nutrition and he really taught me I mean everything that I know when it comes to nutrition he taught me so much in training I was so scared of weights and only doing cardio endless amounts of cardio and restricting my caloric intake so low. So he really got me into like, okay we gotta you know that you need to start. Eating protein because on our first date I had a salad and I'm like pushing aside the carrots and chicken and he's like there is a severe problem with. So
