Amazon's new Ring camera is actually a flying drone -- for inside your home
"Amazon had a big announcement this week. Crazy stuff. Crazy stuff including sensor. So this is this is a complicated story, but there's something technology they're gonNA call sidewalk. which basically put sensors all over your neighborhood. They realized that well, you know you have a doorbell or. You know your your mailbox to might be distant from your Wi. Fi may not be able to get a connection. So what if we spent set up? A low bandwidth network for Internet of things. That goes spans the neighborhood and your neighbors if they have. Amazon stuff. Will support it. It's nine hundred megahertz. So that goes a long long way. Amazon says as much as half a mile. There's a little sensor you could put on your mailbox say. You've got mail. That'd be funny if it said that you've got mail. and you're smart lights and your garage door opener and your and your doorbell, and all that stuff can be on that network. They also say will work with trackers like tile. Because Do. We really wants Amazon have sensors all over the. What that's crazy. But that's not the craziest thing they announced. It's not even close. They a few a month or two ago. They announced a wristband that will analyze your voice and let you know if you're angry. Maybe at the end of the day, you know you, you had some really angry conversations. Okay. Okay they say don't we're not sending your voice back to the Home Office is just analyze it on your in your band. Well okay. I don't I believe that. But. That's not the craziest thing. Even ounce. Probably. The craziest thing they announced is a security camera. That's a drone inside your house. Maybe forty seen the the videos of it. It's just a little base unit looks just like kind of an Amazon. ECHO says, ring on Amazon bought the Ring Doorbell Guy. Says Ring on it. And It's two hundred, fifty bucks available next year. And I don't think flies around your house when your home it could but the idea would be you're not home. Intruder, alert intruder alert and the and the the base thing goes zoo drone comes up out of the base. and. Flies around your house looking for the intruder. They've worked on. This. For two years. They said it's an obvious product that's very hard to build. As, is it an obvious product? It doesn't. You don't have to fly it. It just flies by itself avoids windows. Drapes S- couches, dogs. v You could say where it can go and what path takes they don't go in the bedroom. But So when you first get it, you, you build a map for this drone. It says, okay. Tell me where you'd like me to go to look around. It can be commanded to fly on demand. So guests, it could fly when your home if you WanNa see what the kids are up to. Uh Mom. Kids are GonNA start throwing things at not get off, take it back at the drone out of my room. or it can be programmed to fly. When a disturbances detected by the ring alarm system. When the cameras in the charging basic can't see anything the camera the. Records only when its in flight and and rings says, the drone makes an audible noise when flying of course, it does and you've heard drones or noisy. So, it's not going to sneak up on anybody. So you could use it. They said, well, how many times have you? Left the House and said, did I leave the stove on? If you ever done that I've done. That have you ever turned back to check. I don't remember if I've done that but I wouldn't be surprised not how you can just have the drone look. Is the dog. Okay sleeping. It can it can check to see I don't know if you close the garage door I guess. It will avoid objects in its past the propellers are. Shielded. So you know they they can't hurt anybody if should fly into you. I don't know I. THINK WE WANNA. Battle drone. In case of troopers come in I think it should have shocked probes, buzzsaws, projectiles should you know let's put a gun in the thing? How you like it? The ring. Always Home Cam. That's the weirdest thing Amazon announced. Yeah Wow We think we're living in the future. This is doesn't life feel a little bit like a science fiction novel now? Like maybe it's just me. I feel like You know when I started doing this show way back when in the nineties it was like Oh. Yeah. Yeah. You can. You can have a spreadsheet and do your. Business. Documents. Now, it's like you've got a killer drone in house. Well, it's not a killer yet yet. A. Crazy world we live.
iOS 14 Extravaganza
"Well, apple did release a new update and It has got people's attention even my children who are not totally tuned in the singer Dad. What is this widget thing at understand? So this year the release cop people's attention. We thought it'd be fun to give a whole show. Now that's out in the public and you and I've been using it through the Beta. We've got some wisdom to drop on you. It's right. An Extravaganza of wisdom is what we've just say. No choice now. We. Are there the word has been used right let's get this extravaganza rolling. I feel like I should play some music or something Yes I think widgets are the most visible change to Iowa's fourteen apples kinda slowly been changing and updating. The design has Iowa seven and fourteen is basically in line with all of that. But which I think are the sort of headline feature because it's what you see. The first time release a folders were added that the home screen experience has changed in any meaningful way. Now, it's not a free for all like it is an android you know you're still dealing with like top to bottom you know sort of you gotta fill up one row before you go to the next row there still limitations but widgets have really I think they've really popped more than I thought they would and. Honestly like I was thinking about it before recording. Okay like our or Irish which it's for me. Are they like some other Iowa's features or Mac os features a really cool to play with maybe long term they don't stick around that it's don't find a place in my workflow replacing in my life. But I think I'm I think which is our home run guests school and Android a longtime ago and they've been great on Android for a long time but I'm so excited to have a moment, my phone and my IPAD. I mean they're done well, but they're done with an opinion like something apple would make. But when we were talking about it at our dinner table which. Is Notable because as much as I max Barky at the dinner table. I'm dad sure. But my kids are like you know this was overdue. This list someone feels modern now I mean it just interesting to me to people who are not thinking about this stuff as much as we do on our audience does but it this is clearly something that's going to resonate with people. And you know to answer your question will at worker won't work. It really depends on a couple of factors I. Think you know the software developers need to embrace it. which they've already started to an apple needs to. You know keep the gas down on this you know. So the good the good news about which is right. They're pretty the they look great on your screen. They idea of the different sizes and picking. So you can kind of make an attractive looking screen. Is a thing that is possible for anyone, and I think that apple really you know thinking that through and when you look at Android I've been using an android phone for a while now and it really is just a free for all in you have the freedom to make an incredibly ugly homes cream. And the way apple did this it's pretty hard to make it ugly because the way it's structured in the way the API work. So I, think that's the big plus that the downside is the interaction model. You know it's The old widgets you could actually interact with with these you're getting data or you're launching an APP. And think apple needs to improve that next year which it's new to allow you to interact with them.
Review: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2
"The Galaxy Z. or Fold to. The Galaxy said full to phone. So you may remember I had last week I had the Microsoft duo which was a dual screen phone. That on Hanjin, the middle unfolded. And, I thought this just the software didn't really use it very well. I loved the idea was beautiful harbour, very thin and light and. And everything but it just it was Kinda Janke I could make it fulltime phone. So I sent it back and I took the money. And then some and apply because this is a two thousand dollar phone this galaxy fold, which means you don't have to worry about it 'cause that's ridiculous. Ridiculous. Four Times more than you need to spend for phone. If you need a new phone, you want Andrew get get the Pixel for a or you know that'd be fine. The Google phone but I'm you know me I'm interested in technology and and what we're technologies going. So I thought well, I should try this. I can always return it. If you know what I don't think I'm returning it's pretty cool. So it is thicker and heavier than a regular phone because it you know it's got it folds. It's like a sandwich, a sandwich with nothing in between. But on the other hand, the F- The unlike the Microsoft phone Microsoft not a they don't want you to think of as one. It has screen when it's folded. So you can see notifications, you can actually use it. It's a little it's thinner than a regular phone would be. So it's kind of you know it's not a it's kind of an odd ball screens, really thin and tall compared to any phone that you might use but still. Totally usable can and you don't look like a silly person making a call. It's just it's Kinda. It's Kinda thin. Kind of kind of kind of a weird aspect ratio, but then it has a fingerprint reader face reader, which is good for these days of masks. But then. Let's say you you. You launch a program or something on the front face when you open up the phone, it goes to the open when it's so big. So big nice and spacious. Now. It's like a little tablet and yeah, it was a little concerned about the folding screening indefinitely see that where the fold is doesn't doesn't disappear completely. But it kind of disappears from your awareness. And I have to say. It seems very well made. I wasn't going to get this because I thought. Oh. This Janki. is going to be silly this can be really Janke. You know it's really fun taking a picture with this big screen is huge. Like a bigger with an IPAD which I've always mocked people for. Taking a picture with an IPAD. So this isn't quite so big boy. It's kind of Nice, because you can really see what's going on. You know the pictures it's really like it's like holding. Like holding a big print in your hand. So you can see what it's GonNa look like when it's printed. And of course, Samsung always made the best screens. These are really gorgeous screens and it has a lot of features that duo left out. It's the fastest. Processor out there for for for android the QUALCOMM snapdragon it's It's got wireless charging. It's not waterproof for does proof as definitely not break proof which should make you nervous because if you drop this two thousand, it's like holding a Faberge egg in your hand. If you drop it, you bought it. You know you know. I I went out and took pictures of the other day and I thought. I better, not drop this. This if this falls out of my hand, that's That's a lot of money. So I I I have to say I'm not going to recommend anybody by this crazy expensive two thousand dollars for a phone. But. And, it's not a much better phone than the four hundred or five hundred dollar phone. It's just that. I was curious about folding screens and now I have to report. I'm pleasantly surprised. Unpleasantly surprised it actually It actually is pretty surprisingly functional and it doesn't feel I thought that folding screens gotTA. Be Weird rights feel plastic ear something. Once you open it up you kind of forget it that it you know that it's a plastic or anything it's just a big screen. It's Kinda Nice to have such a big screen in your pocket. So I'm I'm I'm actually very pleased I might even keep it. I know I know I know. A lot of money and then Someday. Did iphone. Event Invitations. Go Out. No, no nobody. Got Him. Okay I. Often don't get him so I don't know. I can't tell but I don't think they went out which means. Well, it's not going to be this week for the IPHONE twelve events like probably probably not gonna be could be next week. Everybody kind of agrees is going to be in October. So it could be maybe October. What is that six? Week from Tuesday yeah. Or October thirteen week from Tuesday they'll nuts new iphones. What do you think they'll be two thousand no but I bet you be able to get him up there. Close. Yet You know you get the. iphone twelve pro Max. With All the available storage they're offering whatever that is five twelve or to fifty six. I think I think you might get it up to fifteen hundred bucks crazy. But people and these things these phones are not. You know their fragile. Which means you got to buy insurance. So add that to the cost of the really not meant to be used for more than a couple years. So. So I'm thinking. maybe we should just you know think of our phone is a phone stick with that. I'll do the. Do the crazy. Spend for weird stuff just to let you know. I don't think this folding phones going to be cheap ever because I think it's an expensive part I. think that's really the problem.
Why a dedicated Zoom device makes sense
"You'll recall that earlier this week I had a lot of fun with that new Microsoft Eighty, five inch dedicated device for teams meetings. It's only twenty two thousand dollars little much for my budget I. Don't know about you but it's been a week for dedicated video meeting devices after that Microsoft announcement though I gotTa love, Amazon's answer which came later in the week, a dedicated ten inch unit for two hundred, fifty dollars the echo show ten, which lets you go through Alexa to connect to zoom skype or Alexa to Alexa direct calls two hundred and fifty dollars. Twenty two, thousand dollars I think I'll take the cheaper one Alex, thank you. I think these dedicated devices when they're priced, right make a lot of sense i. mean think of the kids were stuck at home taking school on their laptops. Now, they could have one more unit just displaying the teacher and lessons which would give their hands free for schoolwork and no taking on the laptop make sense for those of you who are taking meetings all day. The same issue applies isn't it hard to take notes when your laptop screen is filled with Speaker video windows. Plus this way you wouldn't have to worry Webcam placement after all his best to be at eye level which most people ignore and not have the Webcam looking up your Chin that requires putting the laptop atop of a bunch of books which gives you a better look, but it makes it really hard to type. So the savvy speaker or student would have to constantly move the books around that dedicated service on the desk would solve the issue living atop the. Books that could just stay there and not have to be moved around. So Amazon has the echo show ten, which will be out later this year it'll let you connect the Webcam to the TV via the hundred and twenty dollar fired TB Cube device. So so maybe it won't be watching eighty five inches how about fifty or sixty sounds pretty good p particularly when you consider that you can buy a good fifty inch these days for about three hundred dollars. Now, the Amazon solutions won't be available until later this year. But if you have a facebook portal video chat device, you can use the dedicated unit now to connect to zoom because the update started rolling out today. The portal started one, hundred, twenty, nine dollars, and they're available in three sizes at eight, inch, ten inch or fifteen point, six inch. The addition that connects the TV which is called. Portal. TV is not yet supported for the zoom calls meanwhile, that's not all folks next week on Wednesday Google holds its annual fall hardware product event where it's expected to unveil a new top of the line smartphone and updated streaming device and a new take on the nest home hub video display unit last year's nest. Didn't work with zoom or initially even with Google's meat though it does now but not zoom zooms coming later, and I know I can pretty much rest assured that the new Google video display unit we'll be working with zoom and hopefully working well
Ring goes mobile with a trio of car security gadgets
"E way to record video when they're being pulled over by police Amazons Latest round of new ring security devices includes the ring car camp, which is connected with the company's virtual assistant drivers could start recording a police stopped by saying, Alexa. I'm getting pulled over the device, then communicates that it's recording and streaming the content to cloud servers and can notify the drivers emergency contacts. The $200 ring car Cam also features dual facing HD cameras and emergency crash assist. Which automatically triggers a call to first responders. Jason Brooks
Ring’s latest security camera is a drone that flies around inside your house
"Is called the ring always home cam. It's a little miniature drom and it has a base that will charge the battery but when an alarm is detected, for instance, like that sliding glass door open. The drone. COMES UP. Starts flying and flies to whatever part of your home that there's a security violation so that you can then watch on your phone. If you're not there, you can watch it and see what's going on. That's I and the drone will map your entire home. So if you say fly, you can tell it. If you want to manually do you WANNA say, Hey, fly to the kitchen and let me see there it will fly through your house and go into the kitchen and you'll be able to watch the live video feed of that. That's pretty sweet. That's neat. But that Robert laughed, he's like Oh, no drawn. DERNIE weapons whereas make us I don't think there's a weapon on it, but you're going to be caught on video now. So he knows that you you're caught on video the
Drone home: Amazon’s new Ring indoor security camera gives flight to new privacy concerns
"Amazon unveiled some new camera products this week that may raise privacy concerns. There's a camera on a drone that flies inside your home, and there's a camera that records what happens in and around your car kyw's Joshua mcnichols has more right now if police are looking for a suspect in your neighborhood, Amazon Will Ping people with ring doorbell cameras and invite them to relevant videos with police. In this way, Amazon's security cameras create a Private Surveillance Network can help felice. Amazon says videos from its new indoor flying camera and all indoor cameras are off limits to cops. The company wouldn't say whether video from car cameras could be requested by police whatever it decides a spokesperson promised the company would be transparent. Of course, police can always bypass Amazon's privacy policies by getting a search warrant asking for video
Amazon announces new gadgets at big hardware event
"Amazon's latest hardware in such today, Alexa Let's learn Mohr, Cnet's Jason Heiner is on the line. Hi, Jason. Hey, they haven't. So what else does Amazon want us to make room for in our homes now? Well, they changed a couple of things that introduced a new things. This is their fall hardware event that happened yesterday. There's always some surprises, and they didn't they didn't disappoint. This year There were a number of new things that will be announced a new cloud gaining scrimmage, so Using a controller that will connect directly to the cloud back to your any device, you'll be able to play on your fire TV and some other devices. They also announced a ring flying robot drone camera that will go around your house. And if there was anything you were gone, and you've got an alert from an alarm system or a call from a neighbor that something was going on, you could fly this little drug control with your phone and and check things out. Make sure nothing bad was happening. That was interesting. They also announced bring to the company that did the camp of the part of the Amazon that did. The flying camera also announced a new car alarm and a dash cam. So if you get pulled over by the police, you can say, you know, elect side being pulled over and it'll automatically start a camera so that if there was anything that happened with law enforcement That was inappropriate. It would be recorded so on and even a little mailbox said There's something small in that they announced yet today. Well, that's going to be this little center that will let you know when you've got mail or if someone you know is reaching into your mailbox when they shouldn't lots of new self of unexpected things and obviously knew stuff they updated their Amazon echo devices. They know what big cylinders that Sit on here, a little park that sits on your counter or bedside table. But now they are kind of little orbs here. A little balls were more future Look.
The Ring drone is just the latest Amazon privacy puzzle box
"Amazon yesterday rolled out Ah, whole bunch of new speaker and security devices. What I mean is pretty much like there was like something for every room in every size and every person in your house at this point, but pretty much it sounds like they just want to know what you're doing everywhere at all times. Of course they do. S so I would say the most. I don't know what you're gonna ask, but I would say the most revolutionary piece that I saw out of this was the indoor drone camera. No, no, no, no, that's that's where we're going to start. That's why Elaine and explain it. So the indoor drone camera is a home security camera that you would set up. If you want something that is creepy as all hell, I guess. But the idea here that Amazon came up with is a lot of people don't want a home security camera in every room of their home, especially in some of the more private areas, But What you could do it. This is no. It might be set up in your living room. But when you leave, it'll just kind of wander around all rooms of the house and take video for you and check on him Now, are you responsible if you're at work Are you responsible for piloting? Said drone on your phone, or does it fly around? I believe that it will fly around on its own. You can program some some free design a little fun with the dog on that. Well, yeah, So, Yeah, This is not something that I'm even interested in. And I have less of these privacy concerns. And Chuck does. But this is my nightmare. This is literally Like when I wake up in a cold sweat. This is what it's about Drone staring at you in the face. Yes, this's what it's about. So I just I don't know how we've gotten to the point. Where we feel that we need to have something flying around inside our homes to make letter that we feel safe. Like how soft have we gotten What we need to invite. Jeff Bezos is drone into our house to say Thank you, Geoff. For watching over me like I know I can't do it. I can't do it. I think one of the best quotes that I heard this is from a tweet from Walt Most Berg, who's a longtime tech product reviewer, member of the non profit news, literally literacy. Project in a country with no laws regulating digital privacy. Anyone who buys this from a company with a history of privacy problems is insane. And that's about how I feel. I mean, who's really asking for this in their homes play? You know what I think? Plenty of people I I ke your bells have been. Yeah, I understand that you have three camera forward facing camera doorbell. In a drone that flies around your house looking for problems. Not that big a difference. Just wait. I bet this thing sells.
Prepare for the ‘iPhone 12 mini,’ suggest recent leaks
"Well, according to. Apple, accurate leaker and twitter naming artists love to dream. What a guy. He's a poet he's a philosopher he's also an apple leaker. He says that apple used the name iphone twelve mini for the smallest of four models coming this year. We know the other ones will be called the iphone, twelve, twelve pro and twelve pro Max. The first apple mini product was the ipod mini I remember that little that little guy that little diminutive gadget. Two, thousand four what a cute little device that was breaks in the year after Apple. Introduced the Mac mini which has been updated a few times and then the most recent mini line apple added was the IPAD mini in two thousand twelve a whole cute lineup of mini products. Adding an iphone mini would help unify. Lineup with the IPAD. The naming convention makes lot of sense to although it would add a degree of confusion since the mini would pack a screen that's larger than the iphone se. But the is known for having the smallest display. That's I mean at least in tech circles with normal people maybe not but people realize it's kind of like its own separate thing. So will likely show off the IPHONE wind up sometime next month. We talked about that. If they do love to dream is right. Here's how it's going to hear how here's how it's going to go down. The size will be five point, four inch. iphone twelve mini the six point one, inch, iphone twelve and six point one inch I phone twelve pro and the six point seven inch iphone twelve pro Max surfboard addition. And it will come with a free pair of Kirkland jeans. Or Fanny pack whichever you prefer that you'll have a way to carry your phone wherever you go.
Amazons Luna, new Echo and indoor flying drones: What you need to know
"Wouldn't these benchmarks ribbon has been all over this welcome band hey. So you spent the last forty, five minutes basically live tweeting in catching every bit of news. There's a lot to break down but let's get to what most people are familiar with the those are echoes speakers. Talk about the new Echo Speaker that looks a bit more globe ish or roundish yet it's a spherical design and Amazon definitely did a good job of keeping a lot of its hardware. CHANGES UPDATES quiet this year there were way more rumors last year, but this year the just you know there wasn't that much that we knew what to expect. We were hoping for maybe a home robot and that didn't really happen what I would argue about these spherical echoes is that people probably aren't GonNa WanNa bother updating their existing echo line with these products they you know unless unless the audio quality and the quality of Alexa, being able to understand you is so significantly better than it makes sense to do that Kabila stick with what they have except for the echo dots for kids which are ridiculously adorable in. are like you know there's like one that looks like a Tiger I. Think there's another one that looks like. Zebra. So I think they did a really good job of making them lot cuter in fetter for kids. Yeah. I noticed that that those are the the process of stuck out my eye because were so unbelievably adorable Annika see my kid like having a conversation with them that sound super. Precious. they did a lot with kids. They offered a kids profile talk about some of the kidnappings as relates to so that the family aspect of Amazon customers yeah. The kid's profile was probably the most significant one which basically. From what I understand about it if you create a kids profile then. You're echoes throughout the House will respond to your kid in kid friendlier kid appropriate fashions that something that you can already do with an echo doubt kids if you set it up that way, this way that feature could in theory follow the kid around the house. So you don't actually have to set up each device specifically for that, which is annoying for parents in case you want to. Listen to music that is in specifically or explicitly kid friendly so that that I would say it was like. One of the more significant amount announcements related to that, and I'm just curious if there were any other any extra privacy features that come with the kids mode. Just so folks don't have to be worried so for for the kids mode. They've they've done that quite a bit already where it's just much more targeted for kids So there are fewer services there are fewer skills You can't ask it a variety of different questions. So that it's much narrower, much more targeted for kids and it's been like that the whole time so. Just, basically, Alexa but much more curated version
Amazon goes spherical for its refreshed Echo smart speakers
"Showed off some new products and services. It'll be launching video game subscriptions through a platform called Luna Plus. New devices includes spherical models of Amazon's best selling echo and echo dot speakers. And next year, Amazon will sell a new ring home security camera, this one attached to a drone. Second patrol your house
Amazon launches flying camera for the home
"Security camera is taking flight the new always home cam. They're calling it basically a drawn that can fly around inside your house to give you a view of any room you want when you're not home that looks like among the flurry of Amazon announcements today. This is one of them. They expect this to come out of $250. Ah piece when they start shipping next year. This among the announcements Amazon made today, including two new fire TV products during its a big online hardware event today. Amazons Fire TV, competing directly with Roco and Apple, and the new Fire, TV stick and Fire TV Stick Light will be the first of Amazon streaming gadgets to offer a redesigned home screen experience. Amazon out with a bunch of consumer product announcements today, and I was on stock moving higher right now around $50 to 3050 share and the overall
‘Fortnite’ Maker, Spotify Form Advocacy Group to Push for App Store Changes
"Alliance. Here's Jason Brooks on the money Watch. Margie, a coalition of tech firms are teaming up to take on Apple's APP store Commission Spotify Match Group in a fortnight maker Epic games. Joining the nonprofit coalition for Fairness, which hopes to get new laws passed, preventing Apple from charging its 30% app store fi epic and Spotify have already been busy in courts with Apple with epic suing Apple for antitrust violations. After Apple Band Fortnight from the APP store after Epic tried to get around the 30% fee and Spotify earlier this year file an antitrust complaint against Apple in the European Union. Those AB store fees have been critical for Apple services growth. Which Wall Street is expecting to be a bigger piece of apples pie as hardware sales slow down an apple stock bouncing
Amazon update: An indoor security drone! Round Echos!
"The show. Hey, it's Graham. You're listening to talking tech I, WanNa, fill you in on all those new products that Amazon introduced today, and unlike some of the other companies that come out with some new stuff and you say, like, how's it different? I don't understand. Well Gosh. Some of the stuff is pretty radical. Let's start with the ECHO speaker, which is now all-round. It looks totally different. There's a three new ones and they're all in the shape of the ball. You all know the ring video doorbell. Now there's GonNa be a ring security camera in your car. It's going to cost two hundred dollars. It will send you alerts via the ring APP. It senses a tempted break-ins drivers can get alive you and check in on the vehicle and surrounding areas. There's also a cheaper version without a camera selling for sixty dollars that will monitor for impacts, break INS, toes, and more but the ring product that I'm really intrigued about is called the always home cam it's an indoor drone. It flies all over the house to see what's going on. Okay Great I've flown a drone inside the house in it ain't easy. This drones GONNA fly automatically without. Presumably a controller it's going to sell for two hundred, fifty dollars. I can't wait to see how this one works. I am extremely sceptical, but if they pull it off great. All. The new ring products coming in twenty twenty one. Okay. Keeping with the radical there's a new echo show echo show of course, is the ECHO unit with a video display. This year is the ECHO show ten. You will come out later this year and it rotates it's on a rotating base as you use it for video calls, it will rotate with you as you move around the room that sounds kind of fun or it
Trumps TikTok Trouble Continues
"It's now been about a week since Oracle announced that they would be saving Tiktok from being banned in the United States but it's kind of unclear what's actually happening right now to joining me to cut through the noise is senior reporter, Shrink Afar history hate any. So what exactly is going on I'm a little confused. Yeah I don't blame you. There's been a lot of twists and turns in this saga, but the latest is that Oracle his put forward offer. To take over part of TIKTOK. But not the majority of it of its US operations and the deal that Oracle proposed. By Dan's which is tiktok Chinese. Parent Company would still retain eighty percent ownership optic talk you us and the rest would be you know what Oracle at Walmart in partnership would negotiate ship five. Wait a minute. So by Dance Aka, a Chinese entity. Is still in charge of tiktok under the deal that Oracle Walmart proposed. Yes, which is a problem for trump. So while he initially said, he supported the deal he later reversed his position again, and if you remember from the beginning, he was saying I want nothing other than a full sail than he seemed open to lessen a full sail, and now we're back to where we started, which is trump saying that he won't accept anything other than hundred percent of Tiktok us being owned by Americans and not a Chinese company. So. Is there still a sense that this could fall through or does it feel like this now has trump's approval and science still delivered oh no. This definitely is at risk of falling through now I think that initially when trump blessed the steel there was you know probably people at tiktok breathe a sigh of relief but now that trump has again reversed his decision. It's unclear what's going to happen it very well could be this deal does not happen, and that's because the problems that trump has cited for national security haven't necessarily been appeased. Is that right? That's right and it's not just trump saying that I mean others have said you know even people who are not necessarily very partisan which sort of outside national security experts law professors. Sources I've spoken with say that yeah look if what you're worried about is national security and the Chinese government influencing tiktok this deal structure where a Chinese companies still retains majority ownership of tiktok wouldn't really help. Now we don't really know what exactly the national security concerns what the real threat is. It has yet to be proven. The TIKTOK is spying on US citizens or anything like that, and they of course deny that they're doing that. So it's unclear how serious? National security threat really is, but if you are worried about that, the deal that was proposed by Oracle, mom writes probably not going to satisfy those fears, Oracle and Walmart I haven't heard much about Walmart earned during this process i. always thought it was Oracle versus Microsoft what what's the Walmart connection? Yeah. So it seems Kinda random two people but actually are calling Jason del Ray did a good piece on this showing how for Walmart it's all about competing with Amazon and They've they've been losing this battle right for years with Amazon growing to be at the bigger and bigger commerce platform leader, and so for Walmart. This is a way to get in on something new and exciting and hot, and for one's not just be kind of like the slower bigger Guy you know falling behind the the younger. Lean Amazon but instead now it's like, Hey, we were in social media. We're doing something. Cool. We have younger potential market share here younger is. Valuable data potentially right from the the hundred million US users who use TIKTOK andrine. Last thing when we step back from this whether the deal happens or not has the last week sort of raised any questions about just how involved the trump administration is going to be in business deals like this and just how unusual it will prove to be. Completely and that's a great question because look the president of the US does have a lot of authority to issue sanctions and it's not just trump presidents many many many administrations have issued wide ranging bans on trade with certain countries or certain sectors because of national security issues think about sanctions on Iran or you know sanctions on the Soviet Union during the cold. War, right. That's normal. But usually something that's done systematically across a wide range of companies and industries. What is so different about what's happening here? What worries people? is how it seems targeted at one or in this case to companies talk and we chat and how the whole process has been haphazard confusing trump is reversed his positions many times. He says things that are totally beyond the pale in terms of not normal procedure is like saying that the buyer of Tiktok should essentially bribe the US government and pay an extra kick back to the Treasury Department and he actually has in this current deal. Oracle has proposed is giving five billion Oracle Walmart toward an Education Fund. That the US government will set up which and education fund might sound fine but it's it's unprecedented and very worrying from a kind of corruption point of view for a president to be able to to ask for one off kickbacks here and there and set up funds to his liking to do things that he wants to do, which in this case teach patriotic American values it's strange. It is worrisome and that is what is different about this.
Amazon Alexa Event 2020
"He there. Thank you so much. Those of you that tuned in yesterday for the voice and we had a blast and. I hope you had a great time as well. If you were there, if you weren't there, you can already savior for session six voiced end dot com, and also save your seat for the upcoming party as well. Same website voice dot com. Today's a big event for Amazon. If you remember approximately year ago, Amazon announced all of these really cool products the echo frames, the glasses with Lexi Bilton, the echo loop, the ring with Lexi Bilden, and a whole host of other features and products, etc. Well, today is the annual event for Amazon. Lexi for this year, and of course, as being held virtually this year and I am really excited I was actually A. Very fortunate I'm feel very humbled that I was given an invitation to attend this and I look forward to seeing all the new products and I can't wait to report them to you over the coming days as I have a chance to. Let all the different things sinking and think about how they are going to impact what we are doing so. Usually if history has shown us anything, it shows that Amazon is extremely busy behind the scenes and I would expect that we are going to see a whole bunch of new devices. My sense from right is that anything that theoretically could be a hero or a wearable is where Amazon is focusing and so. This is strictly, this is not based on any inside information. This is just my feeling. I would wonder if we're going to see other types of wearables have lexi Bilton maybe earrings maybe a necklace maybe a bracelet maybe a belt, those sorts of things that we wear on us and that will allow Lexi to be with us because he does not have a native phone Amazon doesn't make phones. So it's a way for them to get around that issue. Anyway. I'm excited for the event I'm going to enjoy that and I will make sure to report back to you very soon. Have a wonderful day.

Android 11 on Android TV
"Over on the android developers blog over Google very excited because saw that android eleven for android TV is here, which is very exciting. Introduce android eleven on android TV was the name of the the blog posts. No super exciting, and it's only sort of now Basically, it includes permissions privacy features in memory management for android eleven it will also support for provide support for low latency mode on certain TV's it's got an expanded gamepad support including the tend to switch pro controller steam controller. Also a silent BOOT MOOD FOR SYSTEM UPDATES TV standby for an activity. No mentions at all. Of any UI changes at the moment this whole update was actually more meant for developers those way more under the hood than the front end side of it men currently only one devices supported the ADT three They stay teas that more devices are coming in the coming months but good question as we're on the eve. Presumably on the eve of the presumably run the eve of the announcement around Google's new roll out from the Pixel five all the way down a google chrome cast. What does this mean for Google chrome cast with Google TV device? Is it GonNa Launch the android eleven? Who knows we go to wait and see but I like all this activity around Android TV Jason, what do you think makes? makes of the impending comcast announcement. I don't know because I seem to remember there was that leak that said Oh yeah. The Sabrina device is gonNA come out and it's going to have android Lebanon. It's GonNa. Look totally different Blah Blah Blah. This really unless Google is just kind of like taking us for a ride a week ahead of of the announcement this just feels like it won't last launch with android eleven So I'm not entirely sure what this means for the U I and and for this device this device then to launch with android ten and still be called ANDROID TV because it won't be rebrand or. I don't now I guess we won't know until next week when they actually officially announce it but we do know the name of this device is going to be the google chrome cast with Google. TV, that makes me think that there's some sort of branding change shifting away from android TV Google TV, which would make me think that there would be a change to the UI in some capacity but. I don't know I mean. I feel like do for changes I mean I I I'm probably saying this out of several months now of using ANDROID TV and being tired of the you it but. I do think it's do but if it's not if it's not that point in time, then we just continued to wait but but I do think that it could use a refresh this point. So yeah. Well I do too and and at the same time I'm very curious to see the device that was supposedly going to be running android. So has the eighty three well, not nobody developers have the ADT three it's a developer box it's not a consumer product. It's not something you can go into a store and buy. So really we're just waiting find out more, but this is early. More more coming. So that's always good to know that more is coming. Yes. Oh Yeah of course both.
Roku and Peacock made nice. Will HBO Max and Fire TV follow suit?
"So going into last week, what was the status quo of the standoff between Hbo Max Peacock on the Streamer side and then Roku and fire TV on the devices I'd. So it was a rollback to May, which was when if you're Max launched was surprise honestly all of us that HP the Roku Fire TV, we're not going to have the HBO AD and. That's still the case today You know it's been said launch. Max's not been on either of those two devices against super popular like you said, Roku TV, they're really the least expensive streamers out there and you could you know so many people have them on TV's on on the street devices themselves. So and then peacock which debuted nationwide in July also didn't have HBO Max and didn't have. Sorry. Didn't have a Roku or fire TV. So again both those major services both you know had a lot of hype leading up to them in both kind of like. You know they're not on these super popular devices. So last Friday that changed and Roku peacocks deal. So finally, Roku owners can watch peacock just like everybody else right. So what are the I'm sure that you it's been similar for you like me I've even people that work at c net with us have message to me occasionally and been like w why can't I watch the streaming service? On my Roku or on fire, you have you been getting a lot of reader reaction to the fact that. We had readers were really like I think a lot of years that are in the know are Kinda like at this point like they're they're they're they. They know that it's an issue in the they do complain about especially when they hear about new stuff on on either service potentially but we had a discussion internally about the editor's choice award, which is something that we give to products. We really like currently our editor's choice product is a roku streaming stare. and. We're like is worth polling this this this award, you know give them a little bit of time still especially going into the fall season, but you know it's a big issue offer us evaluating these products so yet again it was it was a surprise. People are still kind of mystify that these massive services from the media companies they can't agree to deal to just get the basic APP on their devices. So also, can you talk a little bit about? What are people missing out on Hbo Max Peacock in addition to being new services especially with Max been a little confusing for people to understand any way. It doesn't help if you can't watch these services on like the most popular things that people watch the but give people sense. You know what are they missing out on if they are Roku or fire TV users, what are they missing by not having a up until last week not having access to both HBO Maxine PGA While I. Think Big Picture. You're missing more on peacock the Max at least in the beginning because. If. You're a Roku or a fire TV user. You can get the regular HBO APP still. So you can watch you know all the shows that are on HBO succession, which just one. In the EMMYS did really well, all those hbo things there on both Max and regular HBO. The things that you're missing on MACs are primarily friends which obviously is is the big marquee feature there and those Hbo, Max. Originals. So that's on there. If you're if you're Roku or five TV subscriber, you can't watch those my kids really like the elmo show on for example. Like he gets up at elmo goes and does a late night show. It's called the not. So late show with ELMO and You know we watch that on our apple TV you know the one time we don't use Roku our house right off because you can't you can't watch it on the Roku. With peacock I think their catalog is a is a little bit less compelling overall You know it's a less expensive service. It's free. But. Again, you're missing a lot of their back catalogue ABC has or NBC. Sorry NBC shows. law and order Svu as well as a parks and recreation thirty rock big names like that. You can stream on peacock and you can't get those on other services however for example, those are both of those comedies thirty rock in. Parts of the wreck are on Hulu. Hulu Subscriber, obviously, you got Hulu APP on your fire TV or Roku. So you're not missing quite as much I think if you're a again a Roku Amazon Rtd user with peacock. So you know it's it's it's it's very complicated, and then these services have different tiers right so at the end of the day, it's it's hard to Parse it all and you can get a Lotta these shows on different services. If you look around
Microsoft purchases Bethesda Softworks in industry-changing acquisition
"Microsoft has announced a seven point five billion. That's billion with a B. deal to acquire Xeni Max media. The parent company of Bethesda Works and it's many studios. Those studios include Bethesda game. Studios ED software and behind some the biggest video game franchises of all time doom fallout elder scrolls and many more. This is a massive this. Tally. This could potentially make. Elder Scrolls xbox exclusive, which I think would be a very bad idea personally now. Is this really not like a conglomerate move I mean that's kind of what it seems to me is like just. John said, I, mean this kind of shuts down. Any gaming wars ever I've the pick up with. that. Franchise of Video Games. Looking at it right now. So here's some of the Games. They have. It's elder scrolls fallout Wolfenstein doom dishonored and pray pray originally was an xbox exclusive. I don't know what is the last release I have no idea dooms on. BLACKFORD is one of my favorite favorite games that you know not just A. Normal but open world style. Dishonored pretty bad, ass. So I'll be completely honest. I would be really surprised if they close platform D- Any of these games just because Microsoft's Microsoft's not stupid you may however I could see Microsoft making him first party priority basically saying xbox gets at first and then after say six months or so many periods of time. Playstation gets now the biggest question is. big into PC as well. So I'm wondering what they're going to be doing with the PC. Rights of Microsoft is still obviously very big and be they released most of their games PC per true. True. So I, don't think they would lean away from that but they don't need you because they're also looking glamour when it comes to the PC's but but as far as the console wars go I'm thinking that they might. You know I, I don't think they're gonNA make an exclusive at least. Yes. I think that might be something that's sort of a future plan down down the road but not going to outright ban half of the fucking people or more even play playstation from playing arguably the biggest game especially for. Elder Scrolls and the fallout series. aside from Bethesda, you have like maybe ea especially with the as sports and activision are are going to be your. Your other top tier triple AAA title giving studios. I mean, Microsoft essentially took a third of the of the triple AAA title fucking throughout
Taking a closer look at the Surface Duo
"You have reviewed the surface duo, the Microsoft surface duo, and before we really get into it like this hardware season in particular I feel like we've gone from like Oh, we've got weird experimental form factors to we've got foreign factors that people are trying to make real. What do you think of this idea that we're finally moving away from just flat glass slabs I think it's an interesting dichotomy because on the one hand, we've got Samsung and Microsoft trying late duo screen and folding screens and with the wing. Holy. Is Getting Weird and then love the weird I welcome it. But on the other hand, we've also got the candy. Bar. That traditional smartphone look is really just gone to a point where it's so almost boring, but it's good. That and it's so the formulas or find that Google was able to pixel for a and actually that's what I liked more. But the place for like a surface duo something like that, right? It's not like people haven't tried to make dual screens. Happen is just like the excitement now is palpable. It's people want something like this now where they might not have as much before. Yeah, I think that's like the people want and whether or not there's a market for it is a big question. So the thing that I struggle with is, are they doing this because they can you know the terrific park quote scientists? Or they doing it because they have a genuine vision they're just doing it to like have something that feels new because the the the market is stagnating a little bit and there's like a you know just everything is a candy bar. Now actually we have a clip we'd had Panos Panay service up on the verge cast a while ago when they were first like trotting around showing everybody I'm Andrew can you play that clip from pantry talks about the category of this thing I feel like phone is such a limiting word you know, and then you say well smartphone I don't even know what that. Means and then fablet I'm not sure what that is but everything hasn't identifying factor to it. Even when we started surface people are like so it's a tablet on my tablet just not tablet to surface. I, don't know what to say and you want to categorize it and put it there I. Think if you're going to create a new category, you're going to try and change things push push things forward. The minute you put you put in a box I think you're law so I've been pretty resistant to that just to not end up there I I'm pretty sure pence knows what a fab line is. I don't think he's too lost. When someone says, it's a tablet no I in my review to like I immediately was like what is the surface duo? It's not a phone. It's just not good as a phone, not a phone. It's also not really a tablet in fact, that's a tablet I. think it Kinda Sucks. It's just something trying to be a lot of things and hearing that Panos description of it now makes a lot of sense. This duo seems to be something that doesn't really know what it is and doesn't know what it wants to be, but it's still trying to be a lot of things anyway
Get cash for your used Apple Watch
"You may be excited about that new apple, what series five, the one that can read your blood oxygen levels. Well fine. So what are you GonNa do with your Old Watch The same thing that you do with the old phones Hannam down or maybe get a trade and get some money for them. Well, just like the used phone market, there's now a cottage industry for used watches. You can probably pick up about forty percent of the retail price. If you go to a bunch of sites, I'm here to tell you all about them today trade more in declutter offer about some of the best pricing that I've seen for instance. Last year's Apple Watch, which originally sold for four hundred dollars with a forty millimeter watch face or five hundred dollars or five hundred dollars. If you added the cellular connectivity, I see prices about two hundred dollars for the top of the line while trade more will give you even more like to fourteen. Now, a lot of people bought the series three watch because it's cheaper originally sold for forty dollars and as of last year got lower down to two hundred bucks. So you can you'll be lucky to get seventy five to a one hundred dollars for it. What about the Samsung? Watches while the new one sells for three, sixty, nine, the game watch three Samsung itself will give you one hundred sixteen dollars off as a trade in with a trait in of on galaxy phones tablet or a previous watch. You won't get as much for the watch on declutter only about fifty bucks. An apple will also give you a trade in they won't give you cash will you trade? They say they'll pay up to about two hundred, forty dollars for the series five or up to one hundred dollars for series three before shipping your watch off to one of these sites. Apple reminds you that you gotta take all the data off how do you do it? Well, there's two ways. One is to open up the watch APP on the phone. Go to the my watch tab tap all watches than the info next the watch and choose unpaid Apple Watch that will wipe it an easier way to do. It might be just do it on the watch itself by clicking settings general reset, erase all content and
Talking Apple's announcements with Phandroid, Nick Gray
"I get the irony of having the editor in chief of Android come on to talk about the apple event. Hey I watched it and let's do this. Okay. I'm not an apple fan boy I can still appreciate good products right? Same same. I used to work in android authority and every time every time I put out a even the slightest thing about an iphone thought that I was a traitor and I was like guys like. I'm allowed to carry more than one phone at any time. So here's the thing. First of all got to give the UPS to help apple. Granted, they have the backing of their partners like Pixar, for example, to make what is a very good looking presentation as far as the quarantine level. Kovin affected trade shows and events and tech shows are concerned I. You know you could. You could expect apple to put put on a good show. It was pretty good granted like with any apple event I kind of not really does off but obviously, like eventually they get into the weeds with their products and you just kind of like okay. Cool. You're you're updating all the IPADS. Dating. All of the Appalachians and whatnot but the whole fact that an iphone twelve was not part of this were you surprised I know people were people were not I was not surprised based off of they set in their last earnings call that the IPHONE would not be coming until. October. So I'll look I mean they they clearly said it wasn't coming and a lot of people seem to have missed that or forgot that Nah and they didn't even they even sent out a reminder once once the event was announced. That no he said the IPHONES. Not Coming till October. and so a lot of people kinda miss that and so that was the speculation of what are they going to announce for a lot of people because some people knew that they weren't announcing the new iphone. So when they sent out the invitation with that weird, it was the apple logo but. Yeah like circling and Tom Whatever I mean. We were speculating that a new apple watch was going to be coming and likely some IPAD information So yeah, I mean that's basically it will. We got the new IPADS and. The. New Apple Watch is because now we have what is the series six is the new one and then the Apple Watch s e. so just like the iphone se we have an apple watch se which is A. I don't WanNa say dumbed down version of the watch because. It's still an incredible piece of Gadgetry but it doesn't have some of the sensors that the main watch has making it useful for somebody who's wanting an apple watch for all of the health and fitness benefits that you can track with the device, but it's probably something more geared towards. A cheaper watch for you know your kids are family members who may not be into fitness tracking you know I would even argue like I agree with you there, but I would even add on top of that. When you put the letters s e on anything apple. I get interested. Like I'll just speak from personal experience because like. If I were to choose if I have no other like knowing that I have other things like my own cameras and my own gaming consoles and stuff like that. If my smartphone was not the center of my universe, then something like a pixel for a which literally I you and and or an iphone se those were the perfect choices for me like I'm actually into. dumbing not dumbing down, you said dumbing down but like slimming my smartphone experience for a better price and they're doing it with smart watches and your Indiapol- ecosystem. I'm actually kind of impressed. Yeah. It is a very, very impressive device and it comes with and Lt version as well which pairs with their new family, what they call it the family sink plan now. Now, you do not need to have it's not a one to one match between a a watch and a smartphone you can connect multiple watches to a single smartphone. So that, you can get on Apple Watch for your children. And also your aging parents so that you can have location tracking and communications with them and fall detection and accident detection. Features built in and pair that with a single device rather than having to have multiple iphones in order to pair that with which makes the Apple Watch. Probably, the first gadget that most parents are going to buy for their children that are not smartphone age ready yet. Yeah. Indeed, and because there's this huge marquette of children friendly watches that are connected that they can make phone calls that they came message their parents or a select small group of people and individuals, and most of those costs. One, hundred, ninety, nine to three, hundred dollars, and all of them have to be paired with a ten dollars a month service plan through your carrier. And just to be clear, the pairing of these devices must be paired with the L. T. E. or this the connected version not just the WIFI version. Yeah, Mindy. So you do have that little bit extra and you do have that monthly subscription that you're gonNA have to pony up for yeah,
Microsoft’s $7.5 billion Bethesda acquisition bolsters Xbox Game Pass
"Microsoft is paying seven point five, billion dollars in cash resented. Max. Media Game Pass has fifteen million subscribers in is growing I. believe that's about five million more subscribers and spring, which is wild. Microsoft now has twenty three studios, but as future games will be on game pass on Launch Day Jason Cher tweeted this answer. The question everyone is asking Phil Spencer tells Dina Base Debase.
