Live from NPR news in Washington I'm korva Coleman the centers for disease control and prevention has identified a case of the new coronavirus in California the case is something of a mystery the patient has not traveled abroad where the virus is spreading and has not come into contact with anybody in the U. S. who is known to have the disease there are now sixty people in the U. S. who have been diagnosed with the illness most of them are people who came back from the quarantine cruise ship in Japan president trump has tapped vice president Mike pence to lead the U. S. effort to respond to the coronavirus meanwhile the U. S. and South Korea are postponing joint military exercises because of the corona virus and piers Anthony kun is in Seoul south Korea's defense ministry says that the two countries have suspended exercises before but never for an epidemic the drills are computerized war games which were to be held in an underground bunker next month the US has one infected soldier in South Korea at the south has twenty two more than nine thousand south Korean troops are under quarantine while initial cases in South Korea apparently came from China transmission of the virus is now almost all local authorities have yet to trace the origin of more than seven hundred cases where about forty percent of the total Anthony kun NPR news Seoul police in Milwaukee have not disclosed a possible motive in a mass shooting yesterday at one of the country's largest breweries a gunman shot five people to death at the Molson Coors beverage company complex he then took his own life the company president and CEO is Gavin Hattersley we're a family here Molson Coors in in Milwaukee and this is an unthinkable tragedy for us Milwaukee police have not identified the five victims or the gunman who was a company employee you end and a rocky officials have announced the names of the first UCD victims of the ISIS genocide to be identified by DNA testing and peers Jane a rap has more from Baghdad sure he'd met Johnson Boston officials read the names of six dot two victims from the village of Cujo where ISIS six years ago rounded up men and older boys shot them and dump them in a mass grave was near the start of the ISIS genocide targeting the small Yazidi religious minority in northern Iraq the bodies will be returned to survivors to be buried in the village another seventy three mass graves in the area are still to be excavated bodies identified included relatives of Nobel Peace Prize winner ninety Emeraude who's in sleeved by ISIS it was one of the first using the women to testify what had happened to her Jana Raff NPR news Baghdad on Wall Street the Dow Jones industrials are down six hundred thirteen points or about two and a quarter percent the nasdaq is down two hundred forty one points or about two and a half percent you're listening to NPR news from Washington from the David Barnett foundation newsroom here at KCRW on cherry Glazer a new case of corona virus in northern California could be the first in the country with no connection to overseas travel or to any other known case as you just heard from N. P. R. that's a serious development because it could mean that the virus is spreading here under the radar of health officials KCRW's Darrell Samson has more until now all fifty nine cases of the coke at nineteen virus in the U. S. were tied to people who traveled abroad or had been in close contact with those who had but there's no indication how this person became infected the patient a resident of Solano county was brought to the UC Davis Medical Center last week but was not immediately tested for the novel strain of corona virus because they didn't fit the profile of someone at risk state health officials have now started the process of tracking down people the patient has been in contact with federal health officials have said it's likely that the virus will spread more widely in the U. S. but president trump downplayed those concerns during a press conference yesterday as he laid out his administration's response because of all we've done the risk to the American people remains very low we have the greatest experts in the world really in the world right here hospital officials and Davis say there's only a small risk that this new coronavirus patient infected others at the facility however some employees have been asked to.
